She stepped into my path before I could pass.
Evelyne did not pretend it was accidental. She moved with purpose, stopping directly in front of me as though she had been waiting for the exact moment I would turn the corner. Her gaze held mine without hesitation, steady and unyielding.
"My lord," Evelyne said.
The title was correct, but there was nothing respectful in the way she said it.
I stopped in front of her instead of walking around her. If she wanted to interrupt me, then she would do it properly.
"You chose an inconvenient place," I said.
"You chose a difficult position," Evelyne replied.
The response came immediately, without pause or hesitation.
I watched her for a moment before speaking again. "If you have something to say, say it."
"I do."
She stepped closer, closing the space between us just enough to make her intention clear.
"You've been closing doors," Evelyne said. "You've made it so that no one reaches him without going through you first."
