Chapter 19 - 19

The final class on Friday afternoons always left students especially excited. The math teacher noticed it too, and after finishing the test review, waved a hand generously and dismissed class early.

A few students shouted noisily, "Long live math! Long live the teacher!"

The teacher nodded in satisfaction and gestured for them to quiet down. "Alright, alright. When you leave, keep it low-key. Don't make a scene—I don't want the dean coming after me."

Lu Yige stuffed an entire set of Five-Three problem books into her backpack. After a moment's thought, she took out Chinese and English, then added several more sets of mock exams.

Next week would be the first citywide joint exam. She needed to revise properly over the weekend.

Xu Lu turned around, opened his mouth as if to say something, then instead asked Jiang Yu, "Have you seen my Rubik's Cube?"

Jiang Yu answered and handed it back to him.

Lu Yige froze for a moment, then couldn't help laughing. Xu Lu really was faithfully carrying out his vow to not speak to her for three days.

"What are you laughing at?" Jiang Yu asked.

"Nothing," Lu Yige said with a smile. "Just happy it's the weekend."

On Saturday morning, although Lu Yige had planned to sleep in, she still woke up naturally at seven. Circadian rhythms were truly something to love and hate at the same time.

After lying in bed for a while, she got up and began her day of revision.

First, two math problems to get into the zone.

When she got tired, two more math problems to refresh her mind.

At 11:30, two final math problems to wrap things up.

Okay, done. Time to go downstairs for lunch.

Lu Yige stretched lazily, looking at the two completed test papers and the thick stack of finished Five-Three exercises on her desk. She felt very satisfied—it had been a highly efficient morning.

As she stepped out, she ran into Jiang Yu, who had just returned from outside.

He was wearing sportswear, his face slightly flushed from the sun, and he was holding a small dinosaur plush toy.

Lu Yige raised an eyebrow at him.

Following her gaze, Jiang Yu glanced at the toy in his hand and said, "I passed by a mall with Jiang Nian today. She wanted to play the claw machine."

Lu Yige nodded. Good—at least he wasn't treating her like an idiot anymore.

"Why didn't you give it to Jiang Nian? You actually like things like this?"

"She already got one," Jiang Yu hesitated, then said, "This one... I'll give it to you."

"No, no, no." Lu Yige waved her hand. "If you really want to give me something, you might as well give me Tianli 38 Sets. I couldn't get it last time at the bookstore."

"Alright, I understand," he replied seriously.

Seeing how earnestly he agreed, Lu Yige felt a little guilty. "Forget it, I was just joking. Let's go eat."

Jiang Yu returned to his room, stuffed the dinosaur plush into the wardrobe, and ignored the message Jiang Nian had sent him. He knew that some things had to be let go.

After lunch, Lu Yige wavered for a few minutes between taking a nap and playing the piano. In the end, she chose the piano.

Playing the piano was an excellent way for her to rest—letting her thoughts drift among the notes was even more relaxing than sleep.

She casually picked a piece she liked. Halfway through, someone came in.

Her mother and Aunt Liu would never disturb her while she was playing, so it had to be Jiang Yu.

She turned her head and shot him a warning look.

"You play beautifully," Jiang Yu said.

"Thank you."

Beautiful or not, that didn't mean he could just walk in.

She glanced at him and turned back. "Why aren't you eating?"

"I already ate outside," Jiang Yu said as he walked closer.

"May I ask what you need?" Lu Yige said impatiently.

Jiang Yu replied, "About the recitation—I want to try practicing with you."

"Oh, right."

They still hadn't rehearsed together yet. Lu Yige found the sheet music and lightly tapped the keys. "Now, then."

"Okay." Jiang Yu already had the script memorized and began reciting immediately.

Lu Yige focused on playing, adjusting the rhythm and emotion to match his voice.

When they finished, she almost wanted to applaud herself. Their first collaboration had been seamless.

"You play beautifully," Jiang Yu said again.

"Yes, yes, I know I play well. You don't need to act like a broken record praising me," she said helplessly.

"It really is beautiful."

"Sure enough, the essence of humanity is... repetition," Lu Yige sighed. "Thanks."

Jiang Yu lowered his eyes. "Could you... play a song just for me?"

Lu Yige asked, "What song?"

"Anything."

"Alright." After a moment's thought, Lu Yige suddenly smiled at him. "I'll dedicate Actor to you."

Jiang Yu looked puzzled. "What song is that?"

"A good one." Lu Yige had liked it in high school and knew the score well, so she began playing directly.

As the music flowed, she softly hummed the lyrics. If she had more confidence in her singing, she would have loved to sing it out loud for him.

When she reached the line, 'I should have played along with your act, but instead turned a blind eye, forcing the one who loves you most to improvise,' Jiang Yu's expression subtly changed.

"What song is this?" Jiang Yu interrupted.

Lu Yige, who had been enjoying herself, said unhappily, "Actor. Didn't I just say that?"

"I've never heard it."

"That's because you're ignorant," Lu Yige glared at him.

"Who sings it?"

"Joker Xue."

Jiang Yu searched on his music app and showed her the results. "I can't find it."

Lu Yige: "..."

This world was completely fictional. The popular actors and singers weren't the same as the ones she knew, and the trending names on social media were all unfamiliar to her.

Feeling a little guilty, she said, "Your phone version is too old."

"Is that so? Then search it for me."

"What are you doing?" Lu Yige improvised on the spot. "This is a song by an older brother who stayed in the same hospital ward as me. He said he was a singer, hospitalized because he was too busy. How would I know why it's not online?"

Jiang Yu looked at her. "Why would your parents let you stay in a regular ward?"

"Try staying alone in a private ward for half a year and see how boring it is," Lu Yige shot back, staring at him. "What's wrong with you today?"

"Sorry."

"I really like this song," Jiang Yu said.

Of course you do—it suits you perfectly. Lu Yige turned away and said flatly, "Got it. I'm going to keep playing. Don't disturb me."

"Okay."

Jiang Yu's footsteps faded away, followed by the soft click of the door closing.

Lu Yige let out a sigh of relief, reminding herself not to get carried away—absolutely not.

When she returned to school on Monday, Lu Yige found that Luo Qing and Zhou Yi were now sitting behind her.

She looked at them. "So... the teacher made you change seats?"

Luo Qing snorted and turned her head away.

Zhou Yi spoke softly, his voice trembling a little. "Chi Yexuan said we'll switch back during class."

Lu Yige slapped her forehead. She had almost forgotten the plot.

Recently, Chi Yexuan and Jiang Nian were deep in their honeymoon phase. Regretting not having chosen the seat next to Jiang Nian in the first place, Chi Yexuan had been forcing Zhou Yi to swap seats with him every day.

Luo Qing was extremely unhappy about it and kept a cold face.

Zhou Yi: small, helpless, pitiful.

Lu Yige sighed. Their issues weren't something she could interfere with. She just needed to focus on her own responsibilities.

Xu Lu turned around, about to say something.

Lu Yige immediately said, "You said it yourself—three days without talking to me."

"It's the fourth day." Xu Lu held up four fingers.

"Prodigy."

"You—" Xu Lu snapped.

"Don't talk to me today," Lu Yige said with a smile.
