Chapter 175 - The Insectoid

The Coliseum was packed.

Aurelion stood in the preparation chamber, his hard-light shield strapped to his arm, his plasma sword humming in his hand. The roar of the crowd filtered through the walls, a constant reminder of what was waiting for him.

K-7 floated beside him.

"Your opponent is a veteran gladiator," the robot said. "Its name is K'thax. It has fought in over two hundred matches and has won the vast majority of them."

Aurelion nodded. "Anything else I should know?"

"It is an insectoid with four arms. The upper two wield plasma swords. The lower two wield laser pistols. It is fast, aggressive, and highly experienced."

"Swords and guns. Great." Aurelion rolled his shoulders. "Sounds like a fun fight."

"Fun is one word for it."

The door opened. A being in ornate robes gestured for him to follow.

"Your match is about to begin," it said.

Aurelion walked into the arena.

The light was blinding.

The crowd erupted as he emerged, their voices a deafening wave of approval. He could hear the chants—"DEMON KING! DEMON KING!"—echoing through the massive dome.

He raised his sword in acknowledgement.

The crowd roared louder.

Then the announcer's voice boomed through the arena.

"LADIES AND BEINGS! WELCOME TO THE MAIN EVENT!"

The crowd cheered.

"IN THE CORNER, THE OFFWORLDER! THE DEMON KING! THE FIGHTER WHO DEFEATED A DUST LURKER IN HIS FIRST MATCH!"

More cheers.

"AND IN THE OTHER CORNER—A VETERAN OF THE COLISEUM! A WARRIOR WITH OVER TWO HUNDRED VICTORIES! THE INSECTOID GLADIATOR—K'THAX!"

The ground shook.

Aurelion watched as the opposite gate rose. A figure emerged from the darkness, its form towering and terrible.

It was massive—easily eight feet tall, its body covered in a thick, chitinous exoskeleton. Four arms extended from its torso, the upper two wielding crackling plasma swords, the lower two holding sleek laser pistols. Its face was a nightmare of mandibles and compound eyes, each one reflecting the light.

It stopped in the center of the arena.

Its eyes fixed on Aurelion.

The announcer's voice was electric.

"TWO FIGHTERS! ONE ARENA! LET THE MATCH BEGIN!"

K'thax attacked.

It moved faster than anything its size should be able to.

The insectoid surged forward, its lower arms raising the laser pistols. Beams of searing light erupted from the barrels, aimed directly at Aurelion's chest.

He dove.

The lasers scorched the sand where he had been standing. He rolled, came up with his shield raised. The next volley struck the hard-light barrier, the energy screaming as it deflected the shots.

K'thax was already closing the distance.

Its upper arms swung the plasma swords in a devastating arc. Aurelion raised his own blade, parrying the first strike. The impact sent sparks flying, the heat of the plasma washing over him.

He blocked the second strike. His shield caught the blow, absorbing the force. He pushed back, driving the insectoid away.

"Not bad," he muttered.

K'thax's mandibles clicked. "You are fast," it said, its voice a harsh, buzzing sound. "But speed is not enough."

It attacked again.

The fight was brutal.

K'thax was relentless, its four arms moving in perfect coordination. The swords swung in arcs of death, the pistols fired in controlled bursts. Aurelion was forced to constantly move, dodge, block, counter.

He landed a hit—his sword carving a gash across the insectoid's arm. Ichor sprayed. K'thax hissed, stumbling back.

Then it responded.

A laser blast caught him in the shoulder, burning through his armor. He gritted his teeth, ignoring the pain. He swung his shield, catching another blast, and drove forward.

His sword found the insectoid's side.

K'thax screamed.

The crowd roared.

Aurelion pressed his advantage, his blade a blur of motion. He carved through the insectoid's defenses, landing hit after hit. K'thax was slowing, its movements growing sluggish.

But it wasn't done.

It lashed out with all four arms, a desperate attack that caught Aurelion off guard. The plasma sword slashed across his chest. He stumbled back, gasping.

"DEMON KING!" the crowd chanted. "DEMON KING!"

He raised his sword.

"You're good," he admitted. "But I'm better."

They clashed again.

Aurelion's plasma sword met the insectoid's blades in a shower of sparks. K'thax was relentless, its four arms moving in a blur of coordinated strikes. The swords swung in deadly arcs. The pistols fired in controlled bursts.

Aurelion blocked, dodged, countered. He was fast—faster than he had been in his first match. But K'thax was faster.

Its blade caught his hilt.

The plasma sword was sliced in half, the blade sputtering out as the hilt fell from Aurelion's grip. He stared at the useless weapon in his hand, then at the insectoid.

K'thax's mandibles clicked in what might have been laughter.

"The Demon King," it buzzed. "Disarmed. Helpless."

Aurelion tossed the broken hilt aside.

"Helpless?" He smiled. "You have no idea."

K'thax attacked again.

Aurelion raised his shield, blocking the barrage of laser fire. The hard-light barrier held, but barely. He was forced back, step by step, his shield absorbing hit after hit.

"You cannot win," the insectoid hissed. "You have no weapon."

Aurelion ducked under a plasma sword, rolled, came up with his shield raised. Another laser blast struck the barrier, sending cracks across its surface.

"I'm just getting started," he said.

He was irritated.

The shards beneath his skin blazed with light.

His body changed—not fully, not completely. Just enough. The armor plates grew from his flesh, covering his arms, his chest, his shoulders. His hands twisted, elongated, became claws. His eyes blazed with crimson fire.

The crowd gasped.

K'thax froze.

Aurelion walked toward it.

"You made a mistake," he said. "You thought I was helpless without a weapon."

He raised his claws.

"But I am the weapon."

He moved.

The insectoid fired. The lasers struck his armor, scorching the surface, but failing to penetrate. Aurelion didn't slow.

K'thax swung its plasma swords. Aurelion caught them.

His claws closed around the blades, the energy screaming against his grip. He pushed, forcing the blades back, back, back—

Into the hilts.

The plasma swords overloaded.

The explosion was immense—a burst of energy that threw the insectoid backward, its arms smoking, its chitin cracked. It tried to rise, its mandibles clicking in confusion.

Aurelion was already there.

His claws found its chest. He drove through the chitin, through the flesh, through the core. The insectoid convulsed, its compound eyes flickering.

"DEMON KING!" the crowd roared. "DEMON KING!"

Aurelion pulled his claws free.

K'thax collapsed.

The arena was silent for a moment.

Then—

The crowd erupted.

Aurelion stood in the center of the arena, his chest heaving, his claws dripping with ichor. The pieces of the plasma swords lay scattered at his feet.

He looked at his hands. The armor was already receding, the claws retracting. He was human again.

K-7 appeared beside him.

"That was an impressive display," the robot said.

Aurelion smiled.

"I told you. I'm just getting started."

The crowd was chaos.

Beings from a dozen worlds screamed, cheered, pounded their fists against the railings. The name echoed through the Coliseum like a battle cry.

"DEMON KING! DEMON KING! DEMON KING!"

In the stands, a figure sat motionless.

He was shrouded in a deep green cloak, its fabric worn and travel-stained. A metal mask covered his face, its surface smooth and featureless except for two narrow slits where eyes should have been. Heavy gauntlets encased his hands, their surface scarred and pitted, as if they had seen countless battles.

He had not cheered.

He had not moved.

He had simply watched.

And now, as Aurelion walked out of the arena, the figure leaned forward slightly. A low chuckle escaped from behind the mask—dry, amused, almost admiring.

"Interesting," he murmured.

His voice was low, rasping, as if it had not been used in a long time.

He watched the Demon King disappear through the tunnel. Then he rose, his movements fluid and silent. The crowd around him didn't notice. They were too focused on the empty arena, still chanting the name of their new champion.

The figure turned.

He walked against the tide of beings, his green cloak flowing behind him. He moved with purpose, threading through the crowd like a ghost. No one stopped him. No one looked at him twice.

He reached the edge of the stands and paused.

He looked back at the arena one last time.

"Very Interesting,"

Then he disappeared into the crowd.
