Some believe following someone's word is a mark of weakness. I say that is one idiotic way of thinking. This is a world, which is ruled by ignorant masses, who believe only their thoughts and actions are right.
When you climb the ladder of social cues, you will find that some of those ignorant idiots are the ones who control the world. If you oppose, then you will find yourself six feet under without having a gravestone to remember you by.
In that situation, you can only wag your tail like a good puppy.
Pride is good; I believe pride is one thing that differentiates people from rulers. I was prideful, extremely so. But if that pride will cause an end to your ambitions, then you hide it; you hide it well to the point that you will fool the whole world, and in the shadow of their underestimation, you will sharpen your sword, waiting for the perfect opportunity.
And when you attack, it will have to finish them in one swing motion; don't even give them a chance to resist.
When the Elders assigned Naoya to defeat a Special-Grade, he didn't object because he foresaw a future where things were going in a way that would pave a path for Maki or Mai to head the Zenin, and the first step for that plan was to make the Zenin clan accept Maki and Mai are the same as them and create a bad impression about himself.
If he had rejected the special-grade mission, then he would have needed to accept a mission in the future; after all, old people can be quite persistent. If he accepts it, then he will have a way to put a full stop to their future requests.
In the world of tigers, you will at least need a fox. Just because Naoya is powerful doesn't mean he can unanimously make Maki or Mai the head. No... that's the wrong way to put it. He can make Maki or Mai head unanimously, but they can't remain the head. When Naoya retreats to the countryside, there will be strong opposition and an assassination plot to overthrow them, and fear can only give so much leverage.
That's why Naoya hatched a plan. Now all the points are arranged neatly for him to draw. Just because he hung up the sword doesn't mean he forgot how to use one. So the elders of the Zenin clan are going to be the first step for Naoya's 'cool uncle' ambition.

When the elders heard what I just said, they fumed with rage.
"What did you just say, Brat?"
"Just because you killed some curse didn't give you the right to stand there and mock us; you're still wet behind the ears."
"Some Curse? I didn't believe I had exorcised some curses. Every curse I dealt with was above grade 1. And for the comment about being "wet behind the ear," I took a kerchief from my pocket and wiped my ear. "There now, all dry. Now there won't be a problem, right?"
"Such arrogance. Do you think your title as next in line would defeat us? We can make someone else an heir. We decide who the next heir will be."
"That would have been the truth till a month ago. Before you all 'unanimously' decided to send me to fight a special grade curse." I let out a chuckle at that. "You know, when I was coming here, I heard the servant call me by different nicknames: Prodigy of Zenin, Genius of Zenin, Thousand-Year Miracle, the Miracle Child, Child of God, etc., but among them, I personally like 'Monster of Zenin Clan and Leader to Zenin.' It both has quite a ferocity and prestige in it, don't you all think?"
Hearing it, all the elders quickly came to realize what I was saying. They didn't care about the 'Monster of Zenin' title, but they indeed cared a lot about the second title, 'Leader of Zenin. ' What does that mean? It means the other clan members already accepted me as the next leader.
I didn't give them a chance as I continued, "I also heard that you all published. I, the heir to the Zenin clan, will defeat a special grade curse for the Jujutsu Society about a month ago, and I have no doubt you all also published; I defeated the said curse the moment I completed the mission with evidence, of course."
They all basically confirmed that I was indeed the next heir to Zenin, unanimously of course.
"What would people think if you suddenly stole my heir titles?" In most cases it will lead to the assumption that the heir is good for nothing, or he died or someone more talented than the previous heir appeared; of course, these are some of the common cases.
I give them some time to catch up; the old brain needs to rotate its gears, after all. Years of freeloading and cursing others who are beneath them might need some more lubrication to work their brains.
"Since I proved and you guys all published that I am not a good-for-nothing, we can weed out the first option. Now for the second option, for me to die. Now you all can already think of the disgrace and mockery that will follow after if I, for some unfortunate 'accident,' die. Can you imagine how other households will look at our 'proud' Zenin clan after they let their god-blessed prodigy die? I can imagine the shame from here. Now the third option: Introduce someone who is more of a genius than me."
I laughed at them like the question itself was funny. "Where the fuck are you going to find them in Zenin? At the age of fourteen, I accomplished what none of you old geezers could; I defeated a Grade-1 sorcerer, who was much more experienced than me, with a pilar in one attack. I defeated the grade-1 curse with nothing but projectile sorcery. I defeated a special grade, all while I am still a newbie to Jujutsu society. So when I said, 'Don't drag me into your contest of pride,' I meant, Don't fuck with me, you fuckers. I am the stair that decides whether you go to heaven or hell. So respect me like how you respect your leaders."
