Chapter 6 – Misunderstanding

Ella returned home from a quick grocery run, humming a little tune, when she noticed Liam's phone buzzing on the counter. Curiosity got the better of her, and she glimpsed the screen before turning away—just a peek.

A message preview flashed:

"Can't wait to see you tonight… ❤️"

Her stomach twisted. "Who is she?" she whispered to herself, heart sinking.

Liam walked in moments later, carrying bags of groceries, and noticed her pale expression. "Ella? What's wrong?"

Ella tried to hide the trembling in her voice. "Nothing… just… your phone. Who's texting you?"

He frowned. "What do you mean?"

She pointed at the screen. "This. Who is she?"

Liam's eyes widened. He quickly snatched the phone. "Ella! That's my cousin! She's planning my birthday dinner. It's not—"

But Ella had already stormed into her room, slamming the door behind her. She could hear Liam calling her name, but her heart felt heavy, and a small part of her didn't want to believe him.

Later, Liam knocked softly. "Ella… please, can we talk?"

Ella's voice was cold. "I think we've talked enough. You should've told me."

He sighed, leaning against the doorframe. "I wasn't hiding anything. I swear. I just didn't think it mattered. But it does. You matter."

Her resolve wavered, but she turned away, refusing to let herself smile at him yet.

That night, lying in bed, Ella's mind replayed the day's events. She hated feeling so jealous, so unsure. And she realized that she cared for Liam far more than she wanted to admit—which made the misunderstanding sting even more.
