Chapter 11 - BLEAK

[LP] [Also known as Life Points] [Once the user hits zero LP, the user will die instantly]

Amael sat on the ground, completely overwhelmed, and no matter how he looked at it, the conclusion was the same. He was being forced into a corner with no real choice in the matter, and it seemed like there was no escaping his fate either.

It was either die at the hands of the protagonist, or die the moment his LP hit zero.

Either way, he was going to die.

The difficulty just kept stacking higher against him, and not only was he unable to fully avoid the plot that would lead to his end, but now it seemed like he'd be dragged into it more deeply than ever before. It was as if this world had decided it wanted him dead and was working actively toward that goal.

No mana. No hidden talent, no blessing, no quirk. A sealed bloodline. No allies, no help, and no realistic chance of getting any.

He was completely screwed, and the more he sat with that realization, the further he sank into it.

Death was inevitable. There was no getting around it, no matter what he did, because it was waiting for him at the end of every road he could see.

[Though you don't have sufficient privileges for most information, you can at least be told this: dying by LP is far worse than any other death you could encounter.]

"Great, exactly the advice I needed."

[I'm only letting you know so you don't try to give up and resign yourself to it, because you will regret that choice.]

Amael could only stare, frustrated well past the point where he could put it into words.

"AT LEAST TELL ME WHAT I'M HERE FOR! I can't just keep suffering for something I know absolutely nothing about!"

[I would tell you, but you don't have sufficient privilege to learn of THE RECORDS.]

"What? The Records?" he started to ask, and then a pain so intense it felt like his soul was being pulled apart cut him off entirely.

[The host is advised not to speak of the Records until the first phase of the conquest is completed.]

"Hah... hah... hah..." He clutched his head and focused on his breathing until it steadied, and he made a mental note never to bring that up again.

It seemed like he had a lot ahead of him, and the only way to get any answers was to stay alive long enough to earn them.

"Then at least tell me how I got here."

[Insufficient privileges. Try leveling up.]

He rubbed his temple and let out a slow breath.

"How long has it been since the party at the mansion?"

[Exactly 39 days, 4 hours, 33 minutes, and 5 seconds.]

"THAT LONG?!"

[Affirmative.]

"There's no way, how is that even possible?!"

[USER, I won't say this again. You don't have sufficient privilege to learn about anything at this stage.]

"That's insane! How can you bring me to this world and not give me a single explanation for why?!"

[User, you need to understand one thing. I'm not the one responsible for bringing you here. I'm only your guide.]

Amael exhaled slowly, took a breath, and decided to stop banging his head against that particular wall.

"Alright, how do I earn LP?" he asked, pulling himself back to something he could actually work with, because he couldn't die, not before he figured out why he'd been brought here and made that goddess answer for every bit of it.

[Simple. Complete quests.]

"Elaborate," he said, closing his eyes and steadying himself, because this wasn't the moment for rash decisions when his life was hanging by this thin a thread.

[There are four types of quests. The first are system-allocated quests, which appear based on your situation and are mandatory, meaning they come with timers and consequences for failure. The second are generated quests, which the user can create to acquire points, though there's a chance a generated quest may also carry penalties, and only one can be active at a time, with rewards scaling to difficulty. The third are side quests, which are triggered by sudden situations, mostly without penalties or timers, though not always, and with completely random rewards. The fourth are main quests, or conquests, which are your ultimate objective in this world, and completing them is what sets you free.]

"So to summarize," Amael said, "I currently have 38 LP, which means I have barely over a month to live unless I complete a quest before then."

[Correct.]

He sighed and frowned at nothing in particular.

[Ding!]

[SIDE QUEST: There is no adventure without a little confrontation with death. Objective: Attend the Academy. Reward: 150 LP. Penalty: You don't want to know. Time remaining: 40:11:45:32]

"What an inspiring penalty," he muttered.

[This side quest was triggered because the system detected a likelihood of you deviating from the original plot and avoiding the academy.]

"So you're not the one generating these quests?"

[In a way, yes, though to clarify, I'm not the system itself. I'm only a part of it.]

"Hold on," Amael said, pushing himself to his feet as something clicked in his head, "is there a way to unseal my bloodline?"

[Yes, but you don't have sufficient LP for the transaction.]

"There is?!" His eyes went wide, because if there was even a real chance of that, then maybe, just maybe, he had something to work toward after all. Maybe he could find a way to compensate for having no mana and actually survive long enough to matter.
