Chapter 8 - Chapter 11 — The Promise of Shadows

Chapter 11 — The Promise of Shadows

Night had settled over the city like a silent predator.

From the highest balcony of the mansion, the entire skyline stretched endlessly beneath a sky painted with dark clouds. The distant lights of the city flickered like scattered stars on the ground, beautiful yet fragile. Somewhere far away thunder murmured softly, warning that a storm was slowly approaching.

But the real storm was not in the sky.

It was inside the mansion.

Anya stood alone beside the tall glass window of her room, her fingers lightly touching the cold surface as she stared outside without really seeing the city.

Her mind was somewhere else.

Ever since that night two days ago, something inside her had changed. The illusion she once had about this place had completely shattered. What she had witnessed in the hidden conference hall of the mansion was something she could never forget.

Men in dark suits.

Cold expressions.

Weapons laid on the table like ordinary objects.

And at the center of that entire room stood one man — calm, composed, and commanding absolute authority.

Riven.

The man she had married.

Before coming here, she had only heard rumors about him. People whispered about his wealth, his influence, his power in the business world. But rumors never mentioned the fear in other men's eyes when they looked at him.

They never mentioned the way the room fell silent when he spoke.

Or the quiet obedience of men who looked more like soldiers than businessmen.

Anya slowly wrapped her arms around herself as a faint chill moved through her body.

"Who are you really…?" she whispered softly into the empty room.

The man she had married was not just rich.

He was dangerous.

And somehow, she had walked directly into the center of his world.

Just then, the door behind her opened quietly.

The soft sound immediately pulled her out of her thoughts.

She turned around.

Riven stepped inside.

Even after living under the same roof with him for weeks, his presence still carried something intimidating. It was not just his height or his sharp features.

It was the way he carried himself.

Confident.

Controlled.

As if the world itself moved according to his will.

Tonight he wore a dark suit, slightly loosened at the collar as though he had just returned from a long meeting. His hair was slightly disordered, and his sharp eyes immediately landed on Anya the moment he entered.

"You're still awake," he said calmly.

His deep voice filled the quiet room effortlessly.

Anya turned her gaze back toward the window.

"How could I sleep?" she replied quietly.

Riven closed the door behind him.

"This house is safer than anywhere else in the city."

A quiet laugh escaped her lips.

But it carried no amusement.

"Safe?" she repeated slowly.

Then she turned toward him again, her eyes searching his face.

"For who?"

Riven raised an eyebrow.

"For you?" she continued.

For a brief moment, something flickered in his eyes.

But it disappeared almost instantly.

Instead of answering, he walked across the room toward the small cabinet near the wall. He poured himself a glass of whiskey with the slow, practiced movements of someone who had done this many times before.

The golden liquid reflected the dim lights of the room.

"You've been thinking too much lately," he said without looking at her.

"And you've been hiding too much," she replied immediately.

The silence that followed was heavy.

Riven slowly lifted the glass to his lips and took a small sip.

Then he turned around.

His gaze studied her carefully.

"You're becoming bold."

Anya crossed her arms.

"Maybe I should have been bold from the beginning."

Riven set the glass down.

"You're not afraid of me."

It wasn't a question.

Anya held his gaze.

"I don't know if I should be."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"You should."

He began walking toward her slowly.

Each step closed the distance between them.

Each step made the air in the room feel heavier.

Finally, he stopped only a few feet away from her.

The silence between them felt strangely intense.

"Then tell me the truth," Anya said quietly.

Riven tilted his head slightly.

"What truth?"

She stared directly into his eyes.

"You know exactly what I mean."

Her voice remained calm, but there was determination inside it.

"What kind of business are you really running here?"

For a moment, Riven said nothing.

His gaze rested on her face as if he was trying to decide something.

Then he leaned casually against the table behind him.

"You're asking dangerous questions."

"And you're giving dangerous silence."

Another quiet moment passed between them.

Outside, thunder rolled louder now.

The storm was coming closer.

Finally, Riven spoke again.

"You're smarter than I expected."

Anya's chest tightened slightly.

"So I'm right."

Riven looked toward the window before returning his gaze to her.

"You saw something two nights ago."

It wasn't a question.

It was a statement.

Anya felt her heartbeat quicken.

"You knew?"

"I know everything that happens in this house."

A small chill traveled down her spine.

"Then why didn't you stop me?"

For the first time that night, Riven's lips curved slightly.

"Because I wanted to see what you would do."

She frowned.

"You were testing me?"

"In a way."

Anya shook her head in disbelief.

"You're unbelievable."

"You married me."

"That doesn't mean I understand you."

Riven's expression darkened slightly.

"You understand enough."

"No," she said quietly.

"I really don't."

Her voice softened.

"All I know is that the man I married isn't just some powerful businessman."

Riven remained silent.

And that silence confirmed her fears.

Anya inhaled slowly.

"You're involved in something illegal."

Still silence.

"And something dangerous."

Finally, Riven spoke.

"Yes."

The word landed heavily between them.

Anya's heart pounded.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because," he replied calmly, "you already know too much."

Anger suddenly flashed in her eyes.

"You dragged me into this world!"

In the next instant, Riven grabbed her wrist.

The movement was fast but controlled.

"I didn't drag you anywhere," he said coldly.

"You stepped into my world the moment you started looking for answers."

Anya's breathing became uneven.

"So what happens now?"

Riven leaned closer to her.

Close enough that she could feel the warmth of his breath.

"Now," he whispered quietly, "you stay under my protection."

"And if I refuse?"

A slow, dangerous smile appeared on his lips.

"You won't."

"Why are you so sure?"

Riven's eyes darkened.

"Because if you leave this mansion…"

He paused.

"…you won't survive the night."

The words struck her like ice.

Anya stared at him in disbelief.

"You're threatening me?"

"No," he replied calmly.

"I'm warning you."

The storm outside finally broke.

Thunder roared across the sky as rain began crashing against the tall windows of the mansion.

Inside the room, the silence grew even heavier.

Anya slowly pulled her wrist from his grip.

"Then answer me one more question," she said quietly.

Riven watched her.

"Why are you protecting me?"

For the first time, Riven hesitated.

It lasted only a second.

But she noticed.

Then he stepped back.

His voice became softer.

"Because you belong to me now."

Anya felt her heartbeat skip.

The words sounded simple.

But something deeper hid inside them.

Riven turned and walked toward the door.

But just before leaving, he stopped.

Without looking back, he spoke one final time.

"And Anya…"

She looked at him.

"The enemies coming for me…"

His voice turned darker.

"…are far more dangerous than you can imagine."

Then he opened the door and left the room.

The door closed softly behind him.

Leaving Anya standing alone in the quiet room.

Outside, the storm continued raging across the city.

And deep inside her heart, she understood something terrifying.

Her life had already crossed a line.

A line between safety and danger.

Between normal life and a world ruled by power, violence, and secrets.

And now that she had stepped into Riven's world…

There was no turning back.
