Chapter 18 - sacrifice

He put on his lab glasses and gloves, a sense of focus settling over him. Equipment clattered onto the table as he worked, the lab's machinery humming to life around him. The hours ticked by - 12:30 AM, 1:00 AM, 1:30 AM... 2:30 AM.

Finally, Hayden held up a small vial of clear liquids, his eyes shining with triumph. "I've done it," he whispered.

But his moment of victory was short-lived. A noise at the door caught his attention. One of the security guards, still half asleep, was stumbling towards the door. Hayden's eyes widened as he realized the danger.

He grabbed the cure, pocketing it, and rushed towards the guard. But it was too late. The guard opened the door, and a horde of zombies spilled in, attacking the man.

Hayden's eyes widened, and he muttered "Shit!" as he turned and ran back to the house, shouting, "Everyone, wake up!"

Blake and Emily stumbled downstairs, sleepy and disoriented. Hayden quickly explained the situation, then rushed to his room, Owen still sleeping soundly.

"Hey, Owen, wake up," Hayden said, shaking him gently. He handed Owen his slippers. "We need to go, now."

Owen blinked, still half asleep, but Hayden's urgency was contagious. He quickly put on his slippers, and the two of them rushed out of the room, joining the others in the hallway .

Everyone was running, some jumping the fence, not even waiting for Blake to put his men on action. Blake, Emily, Hayden, and Owen started running to Blake's car. Hayden was holding Owen's hand just as they were running when Owen tripped on his feet and fell down, causing them both to let go of their hands.

Meanwhile, a zombie lunged at Owen, about to bite him, but Hayden, without thinking, rushed there and placed his hand in the way. The zombie bit Hayden's hand. Hayden pulled Owen back as he grabbed an object and hit the zombie until it fell dead.

Then he got up, carried Owen on his back because Owen's ankle was strained, and rushed to the car. He reached the car, put Owen inside, and gave Blake the cures, saying, "The white one will cure the zombie. They should drink the yellow one - it'll prevent them from transforming even if the zombie bites them. Nothing will happen."

Blake nodded, stretching his hand to help Hayden into the car, but Hayden closed the car door, showing them the bite mark on his hand. Everyone's eyes widened. Owen shook his head, saying "no," trying to open the door as he cried.

Meanwhile, Hayden started transforming into a zombie. Owen managed to open the door and ran to Hayden, hugging him tightly, crying and saying, "No, please, don't leave me. Bite me too."

Hayden pulled him back, tears rolling down his cheeks as his thumb brushed Owen's cheek, saying, "Please, I don't want you to get hurt."

Owen shook his head, saying, "Please, Hayden, I love you. Please don't leave me."

Hayden, still fighting the transformation, leaned in and kissed Owen. Owen closed his eyes, kissing back as he cried, his hands wrapped around Hayden's neck, not wanting to let go.

Hayden pulled away and pushed Owen away, stepping back, walking weakly. His body had already transformed into a zombie, only his mind and self-control remaining.

Owen screamed loudly, but Hayden didn't turn around. The other zombies were approaching. Blake and Emily grabbed Owen and pulled him into the car, closed the door, and drove away from there.

At Hayden house

Blake pulled up to Hayden's mansion, the imposing gates swinging open as the securities and guards nodded them through. The contrast was jarring - outside, the world was a nightmare; inside, everything seemed eerily normal. Gardeners tended to the lawns, and staff bustled about, oblivious to the horrors beyond the walls.

They helped Owen out of the car, his eyes vacant as he stumbled into the house. He collapsed weakly onto the couch, his body drained of energy.

Blake paced around the living room, his fists clenched. "This is all my fault. I couldn't even protect my brother..." He choked back a sob, his eyes welling up with tears.

Emily quickly moved to comfort them both, wrapping her arms around Blake's shoulders. "We can't fall apart now, Blake. We need to figure out how the cure works - Hayden gave us a chance to save everyone."

Owen looked up, a spark of determination in his eyes. "He believed in us. We have to make it count."

The three of them gathered around the coffee table, the vials of cure laid out before them. Blake took a deep breath, composing himself. "Okay, let's get to work."

Together, they began to study the cure, their grief and fear pushed aside by a determination to honor Hayden's sacrifice
