Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20 — WHERE THE FOREST STARTS ACTING LIKE IT HAS OPINIONS

The path to the third checkpoint should have been straightforward.

It wasn't.

The deeper they walked, the more the forest shifted around them. Trees leaned in closer. Roots twisted across the ground like traps waiting to spring. The air thickened with a strange, humming tension that made Soren's skin crawl.

He clutched the fox tighter. "Why does it feel like the forest is… watching us?"

Kael scanned the trees. "Because it is."

Soren groaned. "I hate this place."

The fox chirped, tails glowing faintly.

Lira slowed, frost‑wolf bristling. "Something's wrong."

Aldric scoffed. "Everything is wrong. That's the point."

But even he looked uneasy.

The forest wasn't just alive.

It was aware.

And it didn't seem happy.

They reached a fork in the path.

Left: a narrow trail swallowed by shadows.

Right: a sunlit path lined with glowing flowers.

Soren pointed at the right path. "That one. Obviously. The one that doesn't look like death."

Kael shook his head. "Too obvious."

Lira nodded. "The forest is manipulating the light."

Aldric smirked. "So we take the left."

Soren stared at him. "Why?! Why would we do that?!"

"Because danger means progress."

"I hate your logic."

The fox hopped down and trotted toward the left path.

Soren whimpered. "Traitor."

They followed.

The shadows swallowed them instantly.

The air grew colder.

Not frost‑cold.

Not winter‑cold.

Something older.

Something deeper.

Soren shivered. "This is bad. This is very bad."

Kael nodded. "Stay close."

Lira's frost‑wolf growled low, ears flat.

Aldric's lion cub pressed closer to his leg, mane flickering nervously.

The fox's tails glowed brighter, casting soft light around them.

Soren whispered, "Buddy… please don't let anything jump out."

Something jumped out.

Soren screamed.

It wasn't a beast.

It was a tree.

A tree that moved.

Roots tore free from the ground, twisting like tentacles. Bark split open, revealing a hollow maw lined with thorn‑teeth.

Soren shrieked, "WHY DOES EVERYTHING HERE WANT TO EAT US?!"

Kael shoved him aside as a root lashed out.

Lira raised her hand. "Freeze!"

Frost raced across the roots, slowing them.

Aldric charged. "Leo! Burn it!"

The lion cub roared, flames erupting from its mane as it slashed at the roots.

The fox flickered, appearing on the tree's trunk, tails glowing.

A burst of light exploded.

The tree recoiled, roots flailing wildly.

Kael lunged, spear crackling with lightning.

The tree collapsed, roots curling inward like dying snakes.

Silence.

Soren collapsed to his knees. "I hate this place."

The fox hopped onto his shoulder and chirped.

Soren sighed. "Okay. I hate it slightly less."

They continued deeper.

The shadows thinned.

The air warmed.

And then—

They stepped into a clearing that didn't belong in this forest.

Soft grass.

A gentle breeze.

A pool of crystal‑clear water reflecting the sky.

Soren blinked. "This is… nice?"

Kael frowned. "Too nice."

Lira's frost‑wolf sniffed the air. "Illusion."

Aldric stepped forward. "Or a trap."

The fox hopped down and approached the pool.

Soren panicked. "Buddy—wait—don't drink the magical water—"

The fox didn't drink.

It stared.

Its two tails lifted.

The water rippled.

And an image formed on the surface.

Soren's breath caught.

It was the third checkpoint.

A tall stone archway covered in runes, surrounded by swirling mist.

Kael leaned in. "It's showing us the location."

Lira nodded. "A guidance vision."

Aldric frowned. "Why would the forest help us?"

Soren whispered, "It's not helping. It's warning."

The fox chirped softly.

The image shifted.

The archway darkened.

The mist thickened.

And a massive shadow moved behind it.

Something huge.

Something ancient.

Something waiting.

Soren's voice cracked. "What… what is that?"

No one answered.

The image faded.

The pool stilled.

The clearing dimmed.

Kael straightened. "We need to move."

Lira nodded. "Quickly."

Aldric smirked. "Finally. Something interesting."

Soren groaned. "I hate this place."

The fox hopped onto his shoulder, tails glowing like twin lanterns.

And together, they stepped toward the final checkpoint.

Toward the shadow waiting for them.

Toward whatever the forest had been preparing them for.
