Chapter 51 - CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT: Dawn

The sky turned gray.

Kaelen had seen this before—the false dawn, the moment before battle when the world holds its breath. He had seen it on Earth, in the Belt, on Verath. It never got easier.

The first ships appeared on the horizon. Then the first aircraft, black specks against the lightening sky. Thorne hadn't lied—he was sending everything.

"Here they come," Seri whispered.

Kaelen stood, his bow in his hand, Ash screaming beside him. Around them, the village stirred to life—warriors taking positions, children being hidden,最后的 prayers whispered to a god who might or might not be listening.

"Any last words?" he asked.

Seri smiled. "I see you, Kaelen."

He smiled back. "I see you, Seri. Always."

The first bombs fell.
