Chapter 48 - CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE: The Message

They let the survivors go.

Three days later, a drone appeared over the village. It hovered for a moment, then projected a holographic image into the air.

Commander Thorne's face.

"Kaelen." His voice was calm, almost friendly. "I have to admit, I'm impressed. You've built quite a resistance. You've cost me ships, soldiers, time. But it ends now."

The image shifted, showing a map. The village. The reef. The surrounding ocean.

"I know where you are. I know how many you have. I know your weaknesses." Thorne's smile returned. "In seven days, I'm sending everything I have. Ships, aircraft, ground troops. I'm going to burn your little village to the waterline. I'm going to kill every man, woman, and child who calls it home. And when it's over, I'm going to find you, Kaelen, and I'm going to make you watch."

The image flickered.

"You can run. You can hide. You can even try to fight. But you can't stop me. No one can. This is my world now. I just let you borrow it for a while."

The drone exploded, showering the village with sparks.

Silence.

Then, slowly, Seri stood. Her face was calm, but her eyes burned.

"Seven days," she said. "We have seven days to prepare."

"Prepare for what?" a voice called out. "We can't fight an army. We can't stop ships and aircraft with spears and arrows."

"No." Kaelen stood beside Seri. "But we can make them pay for every inch. We can make the cost so high they'll think twice before coming back." He looked at the gathered people—Metkayina and Omaticaya, united by loss and defiance. "We have seven days. Let's use them."
