Chapter 10 - CHAPTER NINE: The Confession

He found Seri alone, sitting by the pool where they had spent so many evenings.

"I need to tell you something," he said.

She looked up, saw his face, and her expression changed. "What's wrong?"

"I've been lying to you. From the beginning." The words came out in a rush, tumbling over each other. "I wasn't sent here to learn. I was sent here to spy. To find your weaknesses. To help them destroy you."

Seri stood slowly. Her hand moved toward her bow.

"The sky-people," she said. "You work for them."

"Yes. No. I did. But not anymore." He stepped forward, hands raised. "I know what's coming. In three weeks, they're going to attack Hometree. They're going to burn it to the ground. They're going to kill everyone."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because I can't let it happen. Because..." He took a deep breath. "Because I see you, Seri. I see your people. I see this world. And I would rather die than watch it burn."

She stared at him for a long moment. Then, slowly, her hand dropped from her bow.

"You are a fool, Kaelen."

"I know."

"A fool who should have told me this weeks ago."

"I know."

"A fool who might have just doomed us all."

"I know." He met her eyes. "But also a fool who will do everything in his power to stop them. If you'll let me."

The silence stretched between them, filled with the sounds of the jungle, the pulse of Eywa, the beating of their two hearts.

Then Seri did something he didn't expect.

She laughed.

"You are the strangest creature I have ever met, dream-walker." She shook her head. "Come. We need to wake the clan."
