Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 A Flash of White Light!

The interrogating policeman laughed.

But only for a second, then his face instantly darkened, and he slammed his hand on the table!

"Wang Cong, do you think we're three-year-olds?"

"We've gathered a lot of evidence. I advise you to confess as soon as possible!"

Another slightly older policeman tapped the table, his tone stern:

"We've checked your records."

"Your parents died in an accident when you were five. You grew up with your grandmother in the countryside, and only came to Mingzhu City after working hard to get into university."

"Life must have been tough, right? Do you have many grievances against this society?"

A surge of anger welled up inside Wang Cong.

"What business is it of yours how I'm struggling? Did I eat your rice?"

But he dared not speak, and could only swallow his anger.

"No, I like my life now. My grandma is waiting for me to earn money so I can build her a new house."

"Really?" The young policeman flipped through another file. "The file also says you have a long-distance girlfriend, and you've been arguing a lot lately, your relationship isn't going well, right?"

What is all this about?

Weren't we investigating a car accident?

Why are they digging up his entire family history?

This is like they've already decided he's guilty, and now they're just finding a plausible motive for his crime!

"Officer, does this have anything to do with the case?" Wang Cong couldn't help but ask.

"Whether it's related or not, we decide! You just need to answer the questions honestly!" The older policeman slammed his hand on the table, his voice stern.

Wang Cong was completely speechless.

For the next dozen or so hours, they didn't give Wang Cong a chance to rest, just constantly changing officers, repeating the same questions.

"Why did you say that?"

"What is your relationship with the driver who caused the accident?"

"Did you plan all of this beforehand?"

Wang Cong's lips were practically worn out; he couldn't explain himself.

No one believed an ordinary person could predict the future.

In their eyes, Wang Cong was either the murderer or an accomplice.

He endured the interrogation in the interrogation room until the next day, December 4th.

Perhaps they couldn't find any evidence linking him to the hit-and-run driver, or perhaps his detention period was nearing its end.

Wang Cong was released.

The police merely warned him that the case was still under investigation, he wasn't allowed to leave Mingzhu City, and he had to be available at any time.

Stepping out of the police station, Wang Cong looked at the gray sky and let out a long sigh.

The feeling of freedom was wonderful.

He glanced at his phone; it wasn't time to leave work yet.

After thinking for a moment, he decided to go back to the company.

Liu Xin's computer wasn't fixed yesterday, and he'd missed another day of work today; his supervisor's roars seemed to echo in his ears.

He should go back and hand over his work first to avoid further trouble.

However, the moment he stepped into the office...He realized then that the real trouble was just beginning.

As soon as he entered the office, the previously noisy chatter suddenly subsided.

Dozens of eyes turned to him, their gazes filled with complex emotions.

Several colleagues who had previously been on good terms with him silently lowered their heads, pretending to be busy with their own work.

Wang Cong's workstation wasn't far from the door. He steeled himself and walked over. Just as he was about to sit down, the department manager came out of his office.

"Wang Cong, come here for a moment."

Wang Cong followed the manager into the glass-partitioned office.

"Sit down." The manager gestured to the chair opposite him.

The manager didn't immediately berate him for absenteeism as usual; instead, he wore a serious expression.

"Wang Cong, I know you've been under a lot of pressure lately. Young people sometimes have extreme thoughts; that's normal."

Wang Cong was completely confused. What extreme thoughts?

"Manager, I…" The manager waved his hand, interrupting him:

"You don't need to explain. Here's what we'll do: the company will give you a few days off. Take some time to adjust your mindset."

"If there's anything bothering you, you can talk to a psychologist." Wang Cong finally understood.

So, in the manager's eyes, he had become the kind of mentally ill person who might take revenge on society at any moment?

"Manager, I'm not sick! That car accident had nothing to do with me!"

"If it had, I wouldn't have been released, right!" "Okay, okay, it's okay." The manager nodded perfunctorily. "Go back and rest. Don't think about work."

Wang Cong felt like he'd punched a pillow; he couldn't reason with anyone.

His job sounded high-end, but it wasn't. Any college graduate could easily replace him!

This kind of leave was essentially a disguised form of dismissal!

Wang Cong walked out of the manager's office and saw Liu Xin carrying a cup out of the break room.

Their eyes met.

Wang Cong forced a smile, but Liu Xin pretended not to see him and turned away! After leaving the company, Wang Cong took out his phone and dialed a number.

"Hey, Sao Ge! Let's go for a drink!"

A boisterous voice came from the other end of the line: "Sure, same place, I'll be there at seven!"

Sao Ge's real name was Li Hao, and true to his name, he was incredibly flamboyant. He currently worked in sales!

He was Wang Cong's college roommate and his only close friend in the city.

Half an hour later, at an open-air barbecue stall in an urban village.

"Come on, Congzi, let's have a drink!" Li Hao raised his beer mug and clinked it against Wang Cong's.

"Damn it, what bad luck!" Wang Cong slammed his mug on the table.

"What happened? Did you really kill someone?" Sao Ge asked curiously, gnawing on a chicken wing.

Wang Cong chuckled self-deprecatingly:

"I just had a nightmare, and then it came true. Who knew that female streamer was broadcasting live? Now I'm in deep trouble!"

Sao Ge frowned after hearing this:"This is pretty weird."

"But if you really do get the ability to foresee the future, don't forget your brother!"

Wang Cong knew Li Hao was trying to brainwash him (teasingly), but he didn't mind and said, "Sure, sure!" The two of them drank glass after glass, and the empty bottles on the table piled up.

Wang Cong had drunk a bit too much and poured out all his troubles from the past few days.

At the height of his emotions, he even wanted to drag that female anchor out and beat her up.

If it weren't for her, he wouldn't be in such a miserable state!

After a few rounds of drinks, Wang Cong's phone rang.

He took it out and saw the word "girlfriend" flashing on the screen.

It was his girlfriend.

Wang Cong's eyes glazed over.

Just as the police investigation had revealed, he and his girlfriend had a bad relationship and were currently in a cold war!

His girlfriend knew he had been arrested and would likely unleash a barrage of insults and mockery!

Wang Cong felt a surge of irritation.

He didn't want to explain to anyone right now.

He immediately silenced the phone and placed it face down on the table.

Sao Ge saw this but didn't ask any questions, simply refilling his glass.

"Drink!"

That night, Wang Cong didn't know how much he drank.

He only remembered that in the end, Sao Ge carried him back to his rented room and threw him onto the bed.

...December 5th.

The hangover headache made Wang Cong sit up abruptly.

He glanced at his phone on the bedside table.

7:20 AM.

"Damn! I'm going to be late!"

"Wait, looks like I don't have to go to work!"

Wang Cong sighed and fell back onto the bed.

Just then, a blinding white light shone through the window!

The light was ten thousand times brighter than the midday sun, instantly piercing through the curtains and illuminating the entire room in a blinding white!

"What the hell?"

That was Wang Cong's last thought.

The next second, he could see nothing and hear nothing!

...Wang Cong sat up in bed again.
