Chapter 3 - Groom Adjustment

Shen Yu's fingers were still wrapped around my wrist.

Too tight.

Possessive.

As if I were already something he owned.

"Apologize," he said coldly. "Right now. You've embarrassed Ting Ting enough."

Embarrassed.

I looked down at his hand on me.

In my last life, that same hand signed the transfer papers while I was still alive.

That same hand wiped blood from his sleeve without flinching.

Slowly, I removed his fingers from my wrist.

Not with force.

With finality.

"No," I said.

The word landed heavier than the slap.

A ripple moved through the hall.

Shen Yu stared at me as if I had spoken a foreign language.

"What did you say?"

"I said," I repeated, lifting my chin, "I will not apologize."

His jaw tightened. "Xie Mei. Don't test me."

Test you?

I almost laughed.

In my last life, I begged him not to test my father's patience when he demanded early access to company shares.

I begged him not to rush the engagement announcement.

I begged him not to fight with my family.

I begged.

Not this time.

I looked at him — truly looked.

The man I once thought I would spend my life with.

The man who once kissed my forehead and called me his future.

And I felt nothing.

No love.

No pain.

Only calculation.

"You're right," I said quietly.

"I shouldn't test you."

His expression softened slightly, thinking I was retreating.

Poor thing.

"I should end this instead."

The room stilled.

"What?" he said sharply.

I reached up and removed the engagement ring from my finger.

The diamond caught the chandelier light, scattering fractured brilliance across the ceiling.

In my last life, this ring felt like promise.

Now it felt like a shackle.

"I'm breaking off the engagement," I said clearly, my voice carrying across the hall.

Gasps. Audible. Uncontrolled.

"Are you insane?" Shen Yu's composure cracked for the first time. "You think you can just walk away? This isn't a school romance. This is a family contract."

"Yes," I said calmly. "Exactly. A family contract."

The word hung between us.

Contract.

Business.

Power.

Marriage between the Xie family and the Shen family had never been about love.

It was alliance.

Investment.

Control.

"You don't get to cancel it on a whim," he said through clenched teeth.

I smiled faintly.

"I'm not canceling it."

Confusion flickered in his eyes.

Ting Ting, still kneeling among scattered jade beads, froze.

"I'm simply… adjusting the groom."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Even the air seemed to pause.

"I will still honor the contract between our families," I continued, my tone composed. "But since compatibility appears to be an issue…"

I turned slightly, ensuring every guest could hear the next words.

"I will marry your elder brother. Shen Gu."

The name hit like thunder.

Whispers exploded instantly.

"Shen Gu?"

"The reclusive one?"

"He rarely attends events…"

Shen Yu went pale.

For the first time since I'd known him, he looked truly shaken.

"You can't," he said flatly.

"I can," I replied. "And I will."

In my last life, when I was locked in that warehouse, half-conscious and bleeding, I heard a familiar voice arguing outside.

Shen Gu.

Low. Furious.

He had opposed the acquisition.

Opposed the sudden transfer of my company.

He was the only Shen who questioned my disappearance.

The only one who tried to delay the vote.

They sidelined him.

Silenced him.

But he had cared.

Even when I was already as good as dead.

"You don't even know him," Shen Yu said, his voice tightening.

"I know enough."

And that was the most dangerous part.

In this lifetime, I would not choose the charming younger brother who smiled sweetly and calculated ruthlessly.

I would choose the quiet storm.

The man who had stood alone against his own family.

"This is childish revenge," Shen Yu hissed under his breath.

"No," I said softly.

"This is strategy."

Ting Ting stood abruptly, forgetting her act for a split second.

"You're only doing this to hurt Yu!" she blurted.

I looked at her.

And for the first time, I let a fraction of my coldness show.

"No," I said again.

"I'm doing this because I refuse to marry a man who will one day sign my death warrant."

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

Too real.

Too heavy.

A strange silence followed.

Shen Yu's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

I smiled lightly, tilting my head.

"Nothing," I said. "Just intuition."

Then I stepped past him.

Leaving the broken jade beads behind.

Leaving Ting Ting's reddened face.

Leaving Shen Yu standing in the center of a room that no longer obeyed him.

"I'll inform both families tomorrow," I added without turning back. "I'm sure Shen Gu will be… reasonable."

As I walked away, I could feel it.

The shift.

In my past life, this was the night I sealed my fate.

In this life—

This was the night I rewrote it.

And somewhere, in the shadows of the Shen family estate,

A man who once failed to save me

Was about to become my husband.
