Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Moon’s Judgment

The sanctuary hummed with a low, vibrating energy — like the moon itself was holding its breath.

Rylan kept one arm around me, steadying me as the last traces of Lucien's shadow dissolved into the stone. His chest rose and fell in sharp, uneven breaths. His claws were still extended, glowing faintly, as if his body refused to believe the danger had passed.

"Lyra," he whispered, voice raw. "Are you hurt?"

I shook my head. "No. Just… shaken."

He exhaled shakily, forehead pressing against mine. "I thought I lost you."

"You didn't."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, grounding.

Rowan's voice echoed from outside the sealed doors. "Lyra! Rylan! What's happening in there?"

Kade added, "If you're dead, I'm leaving."

Rylan growled, "We're alive."

Rowan shouted, "Then open the damn door!"

Rylan looked at the sealed stone archway. "We can't. Not yet."

The sanctuary walls pulsed with silver light, runes shifting like living script.

I frowned. "What's it doing?"

Rylan swallowed. "Judging."

My stomach tightened. "Judging what?"

He met my gaze. "Us."

The bond pulsed — warm, but trembling.

Rylan stepped back, pulling me gently toward the center of the chamber. The Moonwell glowed brighter, silver light swirling across its surface like a living storm.

"The sanctuary tests the marked," Rylan said quietly. "It tests the bond. It tests our truth."

I swallowed. "We already faced Lucien."

"That wasn't the test," Rylan whispered. "That was the warning."

The Moonwell flared.

A beam of silver light shot upward, splitting into two streams — one wrapping around me, the other around Rylan. The air thickened, humming with ancient power.

Rylan stiffened. "It's starting."

The light tightened around us, pulling us apart.

I gasped as my feet slid across the stone. "Rylan!"

He reached for me, claws scraping the floor. "Lyra — hold on!"

But the sanctuary didn't allow it.

The light yanked us in opposite directions, pinning us against the curved walls of the chamber. My back hit the stone, cold and unyielding. Rylan slammed into the opposite side, golden light flickering around him.

"Lyra!" he shouted.

"I'm here!"

The Moonwell pulsed.

The chamber darkened.

And the test began.

The First Vision — Fear

The silver light around me shifted, swirling into a familiar shape.

Me.

But not as I was now.

Me drowning in the river.

Me collapsing under the bond.

Me dying in Rylan's arms.

Me fading into shadow.

My breath caught. "No…"

The vision whispered, "You are weak."

Rylan roared from across the chamber, "Lyra — don't listen!"

But the vision grew louder.

"You will break him. You will fail him. You will die."

My chest tightened. "Stop…"

"You are not chosen. You are not worthy. You are nothing."

The bond flickered — dimming, trembling.

Rylan shouted, "LYRA — LOOK AT ME!"

I forced my eyes open.

He was pinned to the wall, golden light crackling around him, fighting the sanctuary's hold. His eyes burned with fear — not for himself, but for me.

"Lyra," he whispered, voice breaking. "You're stronger than this."

The bond pulsed — faint, but present.

I inhaled sharply. "I'm not afraid."

The vision hissed. "Liar."

"I'm not afraid," I repeated, louder. "Not of the bond. Not of him. Not of myself."

The silver light around me brightened.

The vision shattered.

The Second Vision — Truth

The light shifted again, forming a new image.

Rylan.

But not as he was now.

Rylan as a child, watching his mother die.

Rylan holding his father's body.

Rylan training alone, bleeding, breaking.

Rylan rejecting every bond.

Rylan believing he was cursed.

Rylan believing he didn't deserve love.

Rylan believing he would destroy anyone who cared for him.

My heart ached. "Rylan…"

He closed his eyes, jaw clenched. "Don't look at that."

"I have to."

"No," he whispered. "Not this."

The vision whispered, "He will lose you. Just like he lost everyone else."

Rylan's breath hitched. "Lyra — please — don't believe it."

I stared at the vision. "This isn't truth."

The vision hissed. "It is his truth."

I shook my head. "Not anymore."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, certain.

Rylan opened his eyes, stunned.

I whispered, "You're not cursed. You're not doomed. You're not alone."

The silver light around him brightened.

The vision shattered.

The Third Vision — Choice

The Moonwell pulsed violently.

The chamber shook.

A final vision rose from the water — towering, blinding, overwhelming.

Two paths.

One bathed in silver light — Rylan and I standing together, leading two packs, breaking the curse, defeating Lucien.

The other swallowed in shadow — Rylan alone, broken, consumed by the curse; me fading into darkness; Lucien victorious.

The sanctuary whispered, "Choose."

Rylan strained against the light. "Lyra — don't choose for me!"

I stared at the paths.

The bond pulsed — hot, fierce, alive.

I whispered, "I'm not choosing for you."

The sanctuary hummed.

"I'm choosing with you."

The silver path flared.

The shadow path dissolved.

The chamber exploded with light.

After the Test

The light released us.

I collapsed to my knees, gasping. Rylan fell beside me, catching himself with one hand, chest heaving.

The Moonwell glowed softly again — calm, steady, approving.

Rylan crawled toward me, pulling me into his arms. "Lyra… gods… are you okay?"

I nodded weakly. "Are you?"

He laughed — breathless, shaky, real. "I am now."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, unbreakable.

The sanctuary doors rumbled.

Rowan's voice echoed from outside. "If you two are done being dramatic, can we come in now?"

Kade added, "If they're kissing, I'm leaving."

Rylan groaned. "I hate them."

I laughed softly. "No, you don't."

He sighed. "Unfortunately."

The doors opened.

Rowan and Kade rushed in, eyes wide.

Rowan froze. "What the hell happened in here?"

Kade whispered, "It looks like the moon exploded."

Rylan stood, pulling me up with him. "The sanctuary tested us."

Rowan raised a brow. "Did you pass?"

Rylan looked at me.

I nodded.

He smiled — small, soft, real. "We passed."

Kade exhaled. "Good. Because we have a problem."

Rylan stiffened. "What now?"

Kade swallowed. "Lucien's army. They're coming."

Rowan added, "And they're not alone."

Rylan's eyes darkened. "Who else?"

Rowan's voice dropped to a whisper.

"The Hollow. And something worse."

The sanctuary trembled.

The war had found us.
