Chapter 27 - THE WOMAN WHO STOOD HER GROUND

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

The news about the recovered documents spread quickly through the small circle of people who knew about the investigation.

By afternoon, Grace received a call from Richard.

"I need to speak with you," he said.

Grace hesitated.

"About what?"

"About the past. About what Robert did to you, and what I allowed to happen."

She glanced at Aisha.

"I don't know if there's anything left to discuss."

"Please, Grace. I owe you the truth."

After ending the call, Grace sat quietly for several minutes.

Aisha sat beside her.

"You don't have to see him if you don't want to."

"I know. But I've spent too many years allowing fear to decide what I can and cannot do."

She lifted her head.

"I'll meet him."

That evening, Grace arrived at the Williams mansion with Aisha and Daniel. Richard was waiting in the garden.

For a moment, neither he nor Grace spoke.

Then Richard approached her.

"I am sorry," he said.

Grace looked at him steadily.

"Sorry for what, Richard? For believing Robert? For allowing people to think I was dishonest? Or for keeping quiet when you knew you had made a mistake?"

Richard lowered his eyes.

"For all of it."

"Do you know what your silence cost me? I lost my reputation, my peace and the chance to explain myself to people who believed the worst about me."

"I know."

"No, you don't. You were able to continue living your life. I had to rebuild mine while protecting a child from a scandal she didn't understand."

Richard had no answer.

Grace's voice softened, but her words remained firm.

"I once loved you. That doesn't mean you had the right to decide what my life should become."

"I was afraid," he admitted. "Robert had manipulated the records, and I didn't know who else I could trust. I thought staying quiet would prevent things from getting worse."

"And instead, it made them worse."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

Grace took a slow breath.

"I accept that you're sorry. But forgiveness isn't something you can demand from me. It will take time."

"I understand."

Aisha watched her mother with admiration. For years, Grace had carried the burden of other people's decisions. Now she was finally speaking for herself.

When the meeting ended, Richard approached Aisha.

"I should have told you what happened years ago."

"Yes, you should have."

"I hope one day you'll forgive me."

Aisha looked at him.

"I don't hate you, Richard. But I need honesty from you if we're going to have any kind of relationship."

"You have my word."

As they left the mansion, Grace seemed lighter than she had in days.

Aisha took her hand.

"I'm proud of you, Mum."

Grace smiled sadly.

"I should have stood up for myself a long time ago."

"You're doing it now."

For the first time, the past no longer felt like a shadow Grace had to run from.

It was a truth she could face without surrendering her dignity.

And that was a beginning of its own.
