Chapter 19 - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Richard Williams had spent the entire morning staring at the photograph on his desk.

It showed Grace standing beside him many years ago. They looked young, hopeful and unaware of how cruel the future could become.

His assistant knocked and entered.

"Sir, there's someone here to see you."

"Who?"

"He says his name is Robert Cole."

Richard stood immediately.

"Send him in."

A moment later, Robert walked into the office with the confidence of a man who believed he had nothing to fear.

"Richard," he greeted casually.

Richard's expression remained cold.

"You have some nerve coming here."

Robert smiled and took a seat without being invited.

"I'm here because your son and Grace's daughter are asking questions."

"I told you to leave them alone."

"And I told you that secrets don't stay buried forever."

Richard moved around his desk.

"What do you want?"

"The same thing I've always wanted. The truth to come out."

Richard gave a bitter laugh.

"You don't care about the truth. You care about revenge."

Robert's smile disappeared.

"Perhaps. But you should remember that I wasn't the only person who made mistakes all those years ago."

Richard stared at him.

"Don't you dare put this on Grace."

"Then tell your son what happened. Tell him why you allowed everyone to believe Grace betrayed you. Tell him why you never corrected the story."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"You know very well what happened."

"I know what you chose to believe."

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Robert stood and adjusted his jacket.

"You have until the end of the week, Richard. After that, I will make sure Aisha learns everything from someone who doesn't care how much it hurts her."

He walked towards the door.

Richard's voice stopped him.

"If you go near that girl, I will make sure you regret it."

Robert turned back.

"You had years to protect Grace. You had years to tell the truth. Don't pretend you suddenly became a hero."

Then he left.

Richard remained standing in the middle of his office, shaken by the confrontation.

He knew Robert was right about one thing: he had allowed a lie to survive because admitting the truth would mean facing his own mistakes.

That evening, Daniel arrived at the mansion and found his father sitting alone.

"Dad, I need answers."

Richard looked up.

"About what?"

"About Grace. About Robert. About the documents everyone seems desperate to find."

Richard sighed.

"Daniel, there are things you don't understand."

"Then explain them to me."

Richard stared at his son, seeing the same stubborn determination he had possessed at that age.

Finally, he spoke.

"Grace never betrayed me. I had reasons to believe she did, but I was wrong to let those accusations destroy her life."

Daniel was stunned.

"You let everyone believe she was guilty?"

"I was afraid of what would happen if I admitted my mistake."

Daniel stepped back, disappointment written across his face.

"You spent years teaching me that a man's word should mean something. Yet you couldn't tell the truth when it mattered most."

Richard lowered his eyes.

Daniel turned towards the door.

"I'm going to help Aisha find those documents. And this time, nobody is going to stop me from discovering the truth."

Richard watched his son leave, knowing the past was finally catching up with him.

And he could no longer blame Robert for everything.
