Daphne's POV
"We are out of vacancies," the manager informed me.
"But I saw the sign outside—"
"It's an old one."
"But—"
"You need to leave."
I glanced behind her to see some of the other employees glaring at me.
I obliged and left the building, eyes drilling into me everywhere I stepped.
Letting out a frustrated sigh, my phone rang, my mother's ID on the screen. My heart leaped into a frantic pound as I waved over a taxi even before I picked up the call.
"Are the bruises giving you trouble, Mum?" I blurted, clutching my chest.
"No," she trailed off, her cadence strange. "It's Callum. He is here."
My anxiety spiked as the taxi zoomed off to the address I directed.
My tongue had grown too thick for my mouth, and I could not even ask what the hell he wanted from us. What if he was with his goons and they had come to hurt my mum again?
"I am on my way," was the only thing I said until we came to a stop in front of my mum's apartment.
