My lids finally lifted, and the first sensation that greeted me was heatâin my chest.
âPutting my hand to my chest, I forced more air into my patched lungs, my vision still swimming. I forced myself up, knowing that I would need to get to work before they woke. I balanced myself on two unsure legs, my knees threatening to buckle. My head weighed a ton on my neck.
âA jarring spark lit my vision, and suddenly, I could remember the final events from the day before:
âAfter the missionâ
Cyrus and Sonya⌠foodâ
The injection in my neckâ
Sonya speaking⌠to someone I could not see or hearâ
She⌠die.
âMy knees finally caved to the pressure, buckling as I quickly tried to catch myself before I ended up kissing the floor. My hand caught the surprisingly sturdy table, but then I caught the glimpse of a sheet that I didn't remember being there the day before. I took a deep breath, waiting for my body to recalibrate as I shut my eyes.
