Chapter 22 - Behind the Mask

As evening descended, the appearance of the Sarinder forest seemed to change completely. The forest that looked so lively and beautiful in daylight turned frightening and mysterious in the darkness of night. The shadows of the trees grew deeper, and a strange chill settled in the air.

Martin and Jones were fully prepared for that night. They knew—perhaps tonight the truth that had remained hidden for so long would finally come to light.

Before night fully set in, they reached a specific spot in the forest—the same place where they had seen the cut trees and suspicious signs the previous day. With them were two trusted tribal youths who knew the forest paths well.

Together, they hid behind a dense bush. The spot was chosen in such a way that they could observe the entire area, yet it was almost impossible for anyone outside to see them.

There was deep silence all around. Only the occasional chirping of crickets and the distant roar of some animal could be heard. There was no moon in the sky, making the darkness even thicker.

Time seemed to move slowly.

Martin whispered,

"Do you think they'll come today?"

Jones replied calmly,

"If this is a regular operation, they will. And if they don't, we'll think of another way."

After a while, Martin spoke again,

"Everything is arranged so perfectly… scaring people, disguises, footprints—everything."

Jones smiled faintly.

"No matter how clever criminals are, they always make a mistake somewhere."

Time passed. The night grew deeper.

Suddenly there was a faint sound.

Everyone became alert at once.

The sound of leaves crunching in the distance.

Then slowly, two shadows moved through the forest.

Martin narrowed his eyes.

Two men.

They were walking very carefully, as if trying not to be seen.

And one of them—

He was dressed like a bear.

A large, dark, furry figure—just as the villagers had described.

Jones whispered,

"Do you see that?"

Martin nodded.

"Everything is clear now."

The two men looked around to make sure no one was nearby. Then they slowly moved toward the cut trees.

One of them took out a small saw, while the other kept watch.

Jones said quietly,

"Just as we thought."

Martin asked,

"What should we do now?"

Jones thought for a moment.

"Nothing yet. Let's be certain, then we'll act."

They silently observed every move of the men.

The two men worked skillfully. It was clear—they were not new to this; they had been doing it for a long time.

From time to time, the man in the bear costume made growling sounds—so that if anyone was nearby, they would be frightened and run away.

Martin whispered,

"This growling is what's terrifying everyone."

Jones said,

"Yes, and in this darkness, no one gets the chance to realize it's not real."

After some time, they saw the men separating parts of the wood, as if preparing to carry them away easily later.

After observing everything, Jones said slowly,

"That's enough. We need to inform the forest department."

Martin nodded.

"Yes, we shouldn't handle this alone."

That very night, they quietly withdrew from the spot.

The next morning.

As sunlight fell over the forest, the darkness of the night seemed to fade a little. But there was no hesitation in Martin and John's minds—today, everything had to end.

They went straight to the forest department.

Everything was explained to the officers in detail—the cut trees, the disguise, the events of the night—everything.

At first, the officers were a bit surprised, but after hearing Jones's observations and seeing the evidence, they understood the seriousness of the matter.

A senior officer said,

"If you can show us the exact place, we can take action."

Jones replied,

"Of course."

A small team was formed—several forest guards, Martin, Jones, and the tribal youths.

Together, they set out toward the forest again.

Today's plan was clear—to catch the men red-handed.

Reaching that same spot in the forest, everyone took their positions. The forest guards spread out around the area so that no one could escape.

Time moved slowly.

Suddenly—

That same sound again.

Two men, just like the previous night, were entering the forest.

They had no idea.

The moment they began their work—

"Now!" a forest guard shouted.

People emerged from all directions.

The two thieves were stunned for a moment.

Then they tried to escape.

One ran deeper into the forest, while the other, wearing the bear costume, ran in another direction while growling.

But the forest guards were prepared.

After a brief chase, both were captured.

As the bear costume was removed, the truth came out in front of everyone.

An ordinary man—who had been scaring everyone by pretending to be a bear.

Martin let out a deep breath.

"Finally…"

Jones said calmly,

"The end of the mystery."

The forest guards handcuffed them.

An officer said,

"They have been doing this for a long time. But today, they couldn't escape."

The air of the forest seemed lighter.

The fear that had haunted people for so long finally collapsed.

The mask was removed.

The truth had come out.

And that truth—was created by humans.
