Chapter 118 - Chapter 118: The Gray Rampaging Tauros of the Safari Zone

The Safari Zone is a place where Trainers are free to capture Pokémon. The ticket price is also very affordable, and if you are a Pokédex-certified Trainer recognized by the League, the service is even free.

When capturing Pokémon in the Safari Zone, you can only use the exclusive Safari Balls, and each person is limited to thirty. Pokémon also cannot be captured through Pokémon battles; instead, you must rely on special methods that do not involve the use of force.

Originally, the Safari Zone had no rule limiting the number of Safari Balls. However, thirty years ago someone accidentally encountered a Dratini, and from then on the legend of Dratini spread throughout the Safari Zone.

Trainers eager to capture Dratini flocked here upon hearing the news. After failing to find any trace of Dratini, they angrily threw large numbers of Safari Balls to capture other Pokémon, which once caused the Safari Zone to become severely depleted. From that time on, the Safari Zone implemented the rule limiting each person to thirty Safari Balls.

"Desire really is a frightening thing…" Red murmured while looking at the Safari Zone poster in his hand. The scene before him had long lost the glory it possessed when it was first established; its current appearance was nothing more than damage control after the fact.

"Excuse me!"

Red gently pushed open the door and entered the room. The walls inside were covered with many photographs of scenery from the Safari Zone. Among them, the most special one was a photo of a man standing together with a Dratini.

"I'm Red from Pallet Town. I'd like to enter the Safari Zone to capture Pokémon."

After speaking, Red took out his Pokédex to prove his identity.

"That's fine. I'm Kaiser, the manager of the Safari Zone. A maximum of thirty Safari Balls can be used here, and Pokémon battles are not allowed during the period."

An elderly man stepped out and introduced the rules of the Safari Zone to Red. Then he brought out a box of green Safari Balls from behind him, with an ordinary fishing rod placed on top.

"Thank you, but don't worry. I don't need that many Safari Balls. I only like to capture Pokémon that truly catch my interest."

Red casually took six Safari Balls. This scene greatly increased Kaiser's favorable impression of him. After all, most Trainers who came here wished they could take a few extra Safari Balls, unlike Red, who only needed six and even thought that was too many.

Because of Red's politeness, Kaiser didn't take out the air bullet pistol at his waist to scare him like he usually did. Instead, he took out a map of the Safari Zone and briefly introduced which areas had more aggressive Pokémon, recommending those places for Red to capture Pokémon.

"Are you sure you only need six Safari Balls? It's not too late to regret it." Kaiser reminded him. Pokémon in the aggressive zones were not something that could be easily captured with only six Safari Balls.

"Mr. Kaiser, you said Pokémon battles aren't allowed, right?" Red asked.

"That's right. But using Poké Balls or weapons privately is also a violation. I hope you won't do something like that," Kaiser advised.

"Don't worry. I won't use those methods," Red assured him.

(It seems psychic powers are allowed…)

"By the way, if you truly want to protect the existence of Dratini, then don't hang that photo on the wall like a nostalgic display."

Red pointed at the photo on the wall and looked at Kaiser with slight displeasure.

"You don't think no one would notice that photo, do you? Mr. Kaiser, the man who discovered Dratini thirty years ago!"

"I understand!"

After hearing Red's reprimand, Kaiser trembled as if awakened. In truth, he had thought about this before but always held onto a sense of luck, because that photo proved the friendship between him and Dratini.

Following the directions on the map Kaiser provided, Red soon arrived at the area where aggressive Pokémon lived. The resources here were more abundant, and it wasn't a place weak Pokémon could occupy.

Even in the food-rich Safari Zone, competition still occurs between different groups. Over time, a hierarchy of strength gradually forms. This is simply the nature of living creatures.

"These are the kinds of Pokémon worth capturing!" Red joked. Most Pokémon living in the Safari Zone had gradually lost their desire to fight due to their comfortable lives. Pokémon like that were only suitable for breeding, not for serious training.

Soon, the sound of battle came from the distance. A herd of Tauros and a herd of Rhyhorn were clashing. The reason was to compete for convenient access to a water source, which was the justification for the battle between the two groups, and also a way to release their innate fighting instincts.

Bang—

The leading Tauros and the leading Rhyhorn collided head-on, confronting each other with the horns they were both proud of.

What caught Red's interest was the leading Tauros, because this Tauros was a rare gray color—meaning it was a shiny Tauros.

Unlike ordinary shiny Pokémon that are often discriminated against by their own kind, this shiny Tauros had become the leader of its herd. Clearly, it had earned the recognition of its group through powerful strength and outstanding leadership ability.

Tauros and Rhyhorn both used Horn Attack. However, Tauros had two horns. Cleverly, it used only one horn to block Rhyhorn's attack while simultaneously using the other horn to deal damage.

Seeing their leader gain the advantage in battle first, the Tauros behind it cheered excitedly, encouraging their leader.

The Rhyhorn, however, seemed already accustomed to Tauros's offensive style. They showed no discouragement, but there wasn't any real fighting spirit either.

Rhyhorn's single horn gathered airflow and spun sharply as it charged forward toward Tauros, unleashing Drill Run.

Seeing this, Tauros immediately used Horn Attack to counter. However, because Rhyhorn had prepared beforehand, Tauros briefly exposed a flaw and was struck in a vital point by the Drill Run.

Just when Red thought the battle would end like this, he noticed something change in the Tauros ahead. Its gray fur began to ripple from extreme anger, and heavy breathing burst from its mouth.

"No wonder. So this shiny Tauros has the Anger Point Ability. Looks like this Rhyhorn is in serious trouble!"

After triggering the Anger Point Ability, Tauros's emotions instantly became violent. The three tails at the end of its body glowed white at the same time, preparing to unleash a triple-powered Iron Tail attack.

The newly appointed Rhyhorn leader had never seen such a terrifying scene. Only now did it understand why the previous leader had hurriedly handed over the position.

Rhyhorn seemed to see the gates of heaven opening before it. Immediately afterward, Tauros's triple Iron Tail attack struck its body, sending the heavy Rhyhorn flying dozens of meters away.

Seeing yet another leader defeated by Tauros, the remaining Rhyhorn wisely carried their fallen leader away and fled in embarrassment, afraid that the enraged Tauros would whip another Iron Tail at them.

After its victory, Tauros gradually calmed down. After sharing the joy of victory with its companions, it walked to the lake and began drinking the clear water.

Only after their leader finished drinking did the other Tauros dare to approach and drink. This wasn't just fear of their leader—it was also respect.

The gray Tauros had just finished quenching its thirst and was about to close its eyes for a short nap when it suddenly sensed a powerful presence approaching. The cautious Tauros immediately stood up and prepared for battle.

"Tauros, I'm very interested in your strength. Would you like to travel with me?"

Red appeared within Tauros's sight and showed it a friendly smile.

(A/N: Comment: Should Eevee evolve into Espeon like in the original story, or evolve into another form?

After all, the Psychic-type already has Abra as a main member.)
