Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22 — THE PHANTOM LIBRARY

After surviving the Shadow Maze, the tournament organizers led the students into a vast, cavernous library. Unlike any classroom, the Phantom Library's shelves towered impossibly high, with books that seemed to hum and glow with their own magical energy. Floating candles drifted above, casting dancing shadows across walls carved with ancient runes.

Lyra's eyes widened. Every book seemed alive—pages fluttering, whispers echoing faintly like ghosts. Mira's fingers trembled on her wand. "Do all of these… move?" she whispered.

Kael's shadow coiled around his legs. "Focus. This is part of the challenge."

The head instructor, his robe flowing as he moved, stepped forward. "The next stage tests your knowledge, perception, and magical control. Each of you will retrieve a specific tome from the shelves. But beware… not all books are safe."

Suddenly, the books quivered violently. Pages flipped open, releasing phantom beasts made of ink and shadow—winged serpents, skeletal hounds, and crawling shadow spiders, each with glowing red eyes. The creatures shrieked and lunged.

Lyra reacted instinctively. Her shadow blade extended, chains lashing out to entangle a flying ink-serpent, wrapping its body until it collapsed into harmless mist. Mira shouted, sending waves of wind to scatter the spiders. Kael moved with silent precision, his shadow splitting into multiple tendrils, cutting the phantom beasts in midair before they could strike.

The shelves shifted, creating narrow paths and dangerous ledges. Books sprouted razor-sharp pages, cutting through the air like blades. Students screamed as they dodged falling shelves or leapt across floating platforms.

Lyra spotted her target: a glowing tome bound in black leather, etched with pulsating silver runes. But it hovered high above, circling a skeletal dragon made of swirling ink.

She gritted her teeth. "Mira, create a distraction. Kael, cover me."

Mira waved her wand, summoning a blinding wind that forced the dragon to recoil. Kael's shadows lashed out, binding the creature's wings temporarily. Lyra sprinted forward, leaping onto a floating shelf. With a flick of her blade, chains shot upward, coiling around the book and pulling it toward her hands.

The book landed with a thud. Its pages glowed, revealing spells and knowledge far beyond their normal classes. Lyra felt her power pulse as she opened it, absorbing fragments of energy that hummed through her veins.

The head instructor's voice rang out: "Well done… but the library is not yet finished with you."

From the corners, more phantom beasts emerged, creeping silently. Lyra's heart pounded, but she had learned something crucial: every challenge tested not just power, but strategy, focus, and courage.
