Chapter 22 - The Price of Power and the Awakening of Chaos

The throne room had never felt so suffocating.

Golden pillars stretched high into the ceiling, banners of the kingdom hanging proudly between them, yet the atmosphere carried none of that pride. Instead, tension coiled tightly in the air like a living thing.

Every knight stood rigid.

Every servant remained silent.

Even the faintest echo of movement seemed too loud for the moment.

At the center of it all stood Kael.

His presence alone was enough to disrupt the balance of the room.

Not because he shouted.

Not because he threatened.

But because he didn't need to.

Behind him stood Lyra and Nyx, both quiet, both alert. Fufuin rested at Kael's side, his small form betraying none of the monstrous power he held.

Before them—

The King.

Seated, but not at ease.

For the first time since Kael had seen him… the man looked uncertain.

Kael stepped forward.

One step.

The sound echoed across the marble floor.

Silence followed.

Then—

"Why?"

His voice was calm.

But heavy.

"Why did you do all of this?"

The King didn't respond immediately.

His fingers tightened on the armrest of the throne.

His gaze lowered… then lifted again.

Cold.

Measured.

"You were never meant to exist in this story," he said plainly.

A murmur spread among the knights.

Kael didn't move.

"So that's it?" he asked. "An accident… and I get thrown away?"

The King's expression hardened.

"You misunderstand."

He leaned forward slightly.

"You are not just an accident."

A pause.

"You are a risk."

The word hung in the air.

Nyx frowned.

Lyra's fingers tightened slightly.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…Explain."

The King exhaled slowly.

Then spoke.

"This world is not stable."

The room grew even quieter.

"Empires are rising. Borders are weakening. Wars are not just possible… they are inevitable."

His voice lowered.

"And beyond that…"

He hesitated.

For the first time—

There was something else in his eyes.

Fear.

"There is something coming."

Kael didn't blink.

"What?"

The King's jaw tightened.

"We do not know its true name."

A long pause.

"But it calls itself…"

His voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"The Pure Chaos."

A ripple of unease spread through the room.

Even the knights shifted slightly.

Kael felt it too.

Not fear.

But… tension.

"What is it?" Nyx asked, her voice sharper now.

The King looked at her.

Then answered.

"A being described in fragments. Ancient records. Forbidden texts."

His gaze returned to Kael.

"Four arms. Horns that twist like broken crowns. And armor…"

He clenched his fist.

"…made from its own bones."

Silence.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Even Fufuin's ears twitched slightly.

Lyra instinctively moved closer to Kael.

That description…

It wasn't just frightening.

It felt wrong.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…And you summoned heroes for that?"

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

"Multiple heroes increase the probability of survival."

Kael let out a quiet breath through his nose.

"So I wasn't needed."

"You were not planned."

The King corrected him.

"But now…"

His gaze shifted.

To the sword at Kael's side.

"…you are something else entirely."

Kael rested his hand lightly on the hilt of the Hero's Sword.

"I'll take responsibility."

The words came naturally.

Firm.

"I'll deal with whatever this 'Chaos' thing is."

For a moment—

The King just stared at him.

Then—

He laughed.

Short.

Dry.

Sarcastic.

"That is not how this world works."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"What do you mean?"

The King raised his hand.

"Show them."

At his side, the Scarlet Knight stepped forward.

Seraphine Drakmor.

Without a word, she raised her hand.

Light gathered.

A translucent card materialized in the air.

Floating.

Glowing faintly blue.

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"What is that?"

"The Rank Card," the King explained. "A manifestation of your soul's strength."

Seraphine turned the card slightly.

On it—

Clear.

Simple.

Rank: D

Kael blinked.

"…D?"

Nyx's eyes widened slightly.

"That low…?"

The King smirked faintly.

"Even she, the strongest knight in this kingdom… is only Rank D."

Seraphine's expression didn't change.

But the weight of that statement was undeniable.

Then—

The armored adventurer stepped forward.

Slow.

Heavy.

He raised his hand as well.

Another card appeared.

Rank: C

Kael's gaze shifted.

"…So that's how strength is measured here."

"Yes."

The King leaned back.

"Not by titles. Not by weapons."

His eyes locked onto Kael.

"But by rank."

Kael looked at his own hand.

"…How do I get one?"

"Join the Guild," the King replied. "Fight. Grow. Survive."

Simple.

Brutal.

Honest.

Lyra spoke up softly.

"And… us?"

The King glanced at her.

Then at Nyx.

Then at the others.

A long pause.

"…Your crimes will be erased."

Nyx raised a brow.

"Just like that?"

"You will be treated as if nothing happened."

His gaze shifted slightly.

"The adventurer will be sent on a redemption mission."

The armored man didn't react.

"And Seraphine…"

He paused.

"…will accompany you."

Silence.

Then—

"…What?"

Seraphine's composure broke.

Just slightly.

Her brows furrowed.

Her lips parted.

"That is—"

She stopped.

Her shoulders tensed.

Then—

She turned away slightly.

Crossed her arms.

And muttered, almost like a child forced into something she didn't want—

"…This is ridiculous."

Nyx blinked.

Lyra covered her mouth.

Kael stared.

The terrifying Scarlet Knight…

…was pouting.

A faint blush touched her cheeks.

"…I don't babysit."

Kael couldn't help it.

A small smirk appeared.

"Guess you do now."

She shot him a glare.

But didn't argue further.

Instead—

She stepped forward.

Stopped in front of him.

Raised her hand.

Her expression slightly embarrassed.

"…Let's just… get along."

Kael looked at her hand.

Then shook it.

Firm.

"Yeah."

Agreement.

Simple.

Final.

Kael turned.

Began walking toward the exit.

But stopped.

Just before leaving.

He glanced back.

Over his shoulder.

His eyes cold.

"If you send someone after me again…"

Silence.

"I won't hold back next time."

The weight of those words crushed the room.

"…I'll finish what I started."

Then—

He left.

And the doors closed behind him.

Far away from the capital…

Deep within a forest untouched by civilization…

Shadows moved.

Figures cloaked in dark fabric advanced silently through thick vegetation.

No sound.

No hesitation.

At their center—

One stood out.

Shorter.

Slim.

With movements far more fluid than the others.

He reached up.

Pulled back his hood.

Silver hair fell gently around his shoulders.

His features were delicate.

Almost feminine.

But his eyes—

Sharp.

Observant.

"Are you sure this is the place?" one of the cloaked figures asked.

The silver-haired one nodded.

"Yes."

His voice was soft.

Light.

Almost melodic.

"Ancient ruins. Buried records. Sealed entities."

A faint smile formed.

"My favorite kind of place."

His name—

Rin.

They stepped forward.

The ruins revealed themselves.

Massive stone structures.

Shaped like broken pyramids.

Covered in moss.

Time had devoured their beauty.

But not their presence.

They entered.

Darkness swallowed them.

Torches ignited—

Green flames.

Unnatural.

The air grew heavier.

Traps triggered.

Blades swung.

Floors collapsed.

But they moved through it all.

Carefully.

Skillfully.

Until—

They reached the center.

A chamber.

Large.

Silent.

At its center—

A tomb.

Wrapped.

Bound.

Sealed.

Rin stepped closer.

Slowly.

"Stay alert," he whispered.

The others spread out.

Weapons ready.

Rin reached the coffin.

Placed his hand on it.

"…Let's see what you're hiding."

He opened it.

And—

BOOM.

Dust exploded into the air.

The torches flickered violently.

The temperature dropped.

Something—

Shifted.

The air twisted.

The wrappings inside the coffin began to move.

Slowly.

Unnaturally.

Then—

A laugh.

Low.

Distorted.

Horrifying.

A figure rose.

Wrapped in ancient cloth.

Eyes glowing from within the darkness.

The presence alone was enough to suffocate the room.

Rin froze.

"…What… is that…?"

One of the cloaked men attacked.

Instantly.

A mistake.

The wrappings shot forward.

Like living snakes.

They wrapped around him.

Crushed him.

Another attacked.

Same result.

No resistance.

No struggle.

Just silence.

Rin's breath trembled.

"No… no, no…"

He turned.

Ran.

As fast as he could.

Behind him—

Screams.

Then silence.

He didn't stop.

He didn't look back.

He burst out of the ruins.

Fell to his knees.

Breathing heavily.

His body shaking.

He looked back.

The ruins stood still.

Silent.

As if nothing had happened.

Rin clenched his fists.

"…What did I just release…?"

A cold wind passed through the forest.

His eyes trembled.

"…This is bad."

A long pause.

Then—

"…This is really bad."

Far away—

Unseen.

Unstoppable.

Something had awakened.

And the world…

Was no longer the same.
