Skarmory couldn't Night Slash the sky.
The natural lightning strikes forced evasive patterns that disrupted Skarmory's cutting runs, buying Zekrom time to rebuild electrical cages in new configurations. The battle became a cycle. cage, cut, lightning rain, rebuild. Each iteration lasting seconds, each iteration teaching both trainers something about the other's adaptability.
Then Asuma revealed the technique he'd been holding in reserve.
"Whirlwind. Iron Defense. Simultaneously."
Skarmory's wings swept inward and its body contracted, metallic feathers compressing into layered armor that doubled its defensive density. Simultaneously, the wing motion generated a rotational wind force that caught the compressed air and accelerated it into a spiral, a tornado of Steel-type energy that formed around Skarmory's body and expanded outward until it occupied the arena's entire center.
The tornado was beautiful and terrible. A rotating column of wind and metallic energy that extended from the platform surface to the cloud layer, its walls dense enough to deflect physical attacks and sharp enough to damage anything that penetrated them. Skarmory hovered at its eye, protected, invisible through the rotating wall, untouchable by any direct assault.
Shield and weapon. Defense and territory. Asuma had turned the center of the arena into a fortress of wind and steel.
Zekrom circled the tornado's perimeter. Every approach met the rotating wall, Steel-type fragments embedded in the wind striking the dragon's scales like machine-gun fire, the sheer wind force pushing against Zekrom's mass with enough pressure to slow its flight. Electrical attacks were scattered by the tornado's rotation, bolts of lightning entering the wall and being distributed across the spinning metallic fragments until the energy dissipated without reaching the eye.
The tornado dominated. Zekrom couldn't penetrate it without taking massive cumulative damage.
Sasuke felt the frustration pulse through the bond, Zekrom's, his own, both at once, indistinguishable. The old approach would have been to analyze. study the tornado's rotation, calculate its frequency, identify structural weaknesses in the wind pattern. And he could see those weaknesses, the mathematical mind hadn't been abandoned, just integrated. But the weaknesses he could see with his eyes were not the weakness he needed.
He reached deeper. Through the bond, through the merged awareness, into Zekrom's electromagnetic perception.
And Zekrom sensed what cameras couldn't see.
The tornado had a magnetic signature. Skarmory's Steel-type body, compressed into Iron Defense configuration, generated a ferromagnetic field that anchored the tornado's rotation. The wind didn't sustain itself, it was sustained by Skarmory's magnetic presence, the way a planet's magnetic field sustains its atmosphere. Disrupt the magnetic anchor, and the tornado would destabilize.
But Skarmory was inside the tornado. Electromagnetic attacks couldn't reach it through the rotating wall. The anchor couldn't be attacked directly.
The anchor didn't need to be attacked directly.
"Zekrom. Earth Power, aimed at the platform."
In the VIP section, Kiyomi's pen stopped moving. "He's targeting the platform's magnetic system," she said, and the words came with the specific urgency of someone who had just realized what was about to happen. "The arena floats on magnetic suspension. If Zekrom disrupts the platform's field..."
"...it disrupts every magnetic system in the arena," Miyuki finished. "Including Skarmory's ferromagnetic anchor."
"Including the platform's levitation," Kasumi said, gripping the railing. "Is he insane?"
The answer was. possibly.
Zekrom's forelimbs slammed into the arena platform, and Earth Power, a Ground-type move, devastating against Electric-types but wielded here against neither opponent nor arena but against the infrastructure itself, pulsed downward into the magnetic suspension system. The platform shuddered. The levitation field fluctuated. For two terrifying seconds, the entire arena dropped by three meters before the backup systems compensated and re-established equilibrium.
But the magnetic disruption was already propagating upward.
The ferromagnetic field that anchored Skarmory's tornado destabilized, the Steel-type's magnetic signature scrambled by interference from the platform's disrupted suspension. The tornado wavered. Its rotation lost coherence, the organized spiral degrading into chaotic turbulence, the metallic fragments scattering as the wind that carried them forgot its purpose.
The eye opened.
For one second, Skarmory was visible, exposed, unshielded, its Iron Defense still active but its environmental protection gone.
"Bolt Strike, through the eye."
Zekrom launched from the platform's edge with everything it had. Turbine tail at maximum rotation, electromagnetic field contracted to a point, the dragon's entire body wreathed in concentrated electrical energy that turned its void-dark form into a living bolt of lightning. It punched through the collapsing tornado's remnants, metallic fragments scoring its scales, residual wind shear buffeting its trajectory, and struck Skarmory with the full force of a Primal Legendary's signature attack.
The impact was nuclear.
Electrical energy detonated against Steel-type armor in an explosion that the safety barriers barely contained. Skarmory's Iron Defense absorbed a significant portion, the compressed metallic feathers distributing the shock across the entire body, but "a significant portion" of Zekrom's Bolt Strike at Primal intensity still left a devastating remainder. Skarmory screamed, the metallic shriek of a Steel-type in genuine distress, and was sent spiraling backward through the sky, its Primal plumage scorched, one wing trailing smoke.
But it didn't fall.
Twenty years. Twenty years of partnership, twenty years of taking hits from every type and every power level, twenty years of training a body to endure what lesser Pokémon couldn't survive. Skarmory arrested its spiral with a wingbeat that cracked the air, righted itself, and hovered, damaged, breathing hard, one eye closed against the electrical burns across its face, but functional. Its wings were scarred. Its armor was compromised. Its wind control was diminished.
But it was still in the sky.
Both Pokémon hung in the air, wounded, breathing hard, the arena between them filled with the debris of their exchanges, scattered metal fragments, residual electrical charge, the slowly dissipating remnants of the tornado. The magnetic platform had re-stabilized, but its surface bore the starburst pattern of Zekrom's Earth Power and the scoring marks of the Steel Storm's fragments.
Asuma's expression had changed.
The relaxed confidence was gone. Not replaced by concern, Asuma didn't seem like a man who experienced concern in the way normal people did, but by engagement. Full, complete, unreserved engagement. The expression of a Gym Leader who had stopped testing and started fighting, who had found in this challenger something worth the full weight of his capability.
