The purplish hematoma eating away at his cheekbone was only just beginning to yellow, and his lower lip still bore the scab of a deep gash. His body screamed with exhaustion, demanding the sleep it stubbornly denied him.

But in his obsidian eyes, fatigue had no hold. The fever of completion burned there with the intensity of a nuclear reactor.

When he pushed open the reinforced armored door of the network testing lab, the young CEO was greeted by a familiar smell of hot tin and ozone.

The large room, usually teeming with hackers and mathematicians, had been evacuated for the occasion. Only the praetorian guard awaited him there. Karim Belkacem, the sleeves of his rumpled shirt rolled up to his forearms, was drinking black coffee.

Beside him, bent over an improbable tangle of copper cables and printed circuit boards, were Linh and Minh.

The fifteen-year-old twins had no business being in that top-secret basement on a Friday morning. Their teachers at the prestigious Parisian high school they attended must surely have noted their absence at that precise time.

But for the sixty-year-old engineer trapped in Lazarus's body, the Republic's school system had nothing left to teach these two minds. Their true school was here, in the bowels of technological warfare.

« You skipped the math class, » Lazare observed, his gravelly voice breaking the silence of the laboratory.

Minh looked up from his soldering iron, pushing back a strand of black hair from his damp forehead.

« Their algebra program only covers quadratic equations, » replied the teenager with a pragmatism devoid of any arrogance. « We had more urgent matters to address regarding the stability of the modem's phase loop. »

Lazare gave a faint smile and approached the central workbench. On the table rested a matte black polycarbonate tower, the final case for the Compaq AXIOM, Volta's flagship consumer product. Connected to the back of the machine, a strange black box, flashing green LEDs, dipped its cables into a telephone line simulator.

It was the result of their secret alliance with Xavier Niel. The prototype of the first ADSL « Box ».

« The equipment is ready, Lazare, » announced Karim, stepping towards the control terminal. « Minh spent the night tinkering with the router to simulate the worst conditions of France Telecom's copper network.

Crosstalk, packet loss, atrocious latency. We're recreating the telephone line of an isolated farm in the Creuse region on a stormy day. »

The technical director tapped the computer's black case. « Our VESLA-III processor natively integrates a 10/100 Ethernet controller on the silicon. This allows us to communicate directly with Niel's Box without going through an obsolete 56k modem and cumbersome software drivers.

The question is whether our new operating system can handle a silent update under these apocalyptic conditions. »

« Start the sequence, » ordered Lazare, crossing his arms and ignoring the throbbing in his ribs.

Karim typed a command line on the master server.

Instantly, the network activated. The system simulated sending a critical operating system kernel update from Volta's Parisian servers to the test computer.

The monitoring screen displayed the data stream. Thanks to VESLA-III's Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), the operation was pure architectural magic. A single physical core executed two separate instruction streams.

The first hardware thread handled the user interface and applications, while the second thread, assigned a low priority by the VoltaOS scheduler, dealt exclusively with the TCP/IP stack and network downloads.

Lazare stepped forward, his dark gaze locked on the screen.

Lazarus let out a slow sigh of satisfaction.

« Perfect hardware and software rollback, » the pioneer observed. « The computer that never dies. The Wintel Alliance sells machines that terrify their own users with the slightest mistake.

We sell them invulnerability. It's life insurance for the general public. »

Karim turned to his boss, a fierce smile stretching his weary features. « The piping is infallible, Lazare. The umbilical cord to our servers will hold firm, no matter the storm.

But piping alone isn't enough to sell millions of machines. Users don't fall in love with a network protocol or an out-of-order processor. They fall in love with what they see.

With what they touch. »

The technical director stepped aside, giving way to Linh.

The usually so quiet Asian girl approached the keyboard with the grace of a conductor. It was she, traumatized by the ugliness of the world and the mathematical austerity of the system's early versions, who had taken the reins of aesthetics.

Under the supervision of Lazare and Karim, she had spent the year redesigning the visual soul of the empire.

Silence fell once more in the Level 4 laboratory. The clicking of the servers in the background seemed to applaud the demonstration.

Lazare Bonaparte took a step back, gazing at the screen of the Compaq AXIOM. The pain of his cracked ribs had completely disappeared from his consciousness, obliterated by the incandescent triumph.

He looked at Karim Belkacem, the Jussieu scholarship student who became Europe's leading software architect. He gazed at Linh, the war orphan who became the sculptor of future aesthetics. He stared at Minh, the street kid from Da Nang who became a master of physical engineering and telecommunications.

His praetorian guard. His court of miracles.

Shovels and picks to try and exploit the digital world. »

Lazare placed his hand on the black chassis of the machine.

« We don't sell tools. We sell a philosophy. A way of life.

We offer a world where the machine fades into the background, allowing the fluidity of thought to take center stage, where the beauty of the interface shields us from the complexity of silicon, and where security is absolute. The computer is no longer just an office machine; it's an extension of the human brain. »

The Builder turned to his three lieutenants. The Ogre's mask cracked, revealing the predatory smile of a man who knows the war is already won before the first trade battle is even fought.

« The arsenal is ready, » Lazarus decreed. « Lock the code.

Start production of the master disks. In the spring, we're not going to compete with America. We're going to erase it from the collective imagination. »
