The elevators opened onto the executive floor of Ashford Holdings just before eight o'clock. Employees who had already arrived greeted Seraphina as she stepped into the reception area.
"Good morning, Ms Ashford."
"Good morning." She replied.
"Welcome back."
She returned each greeting with an easy smile. Months ago, she would have walked straight to her office with her attention fixed on the day's schedule. She would have worried about making a mistake or saying the wrong thing. Today, she slowed her pace. She noticed the young receptionist who had recently joined the company.
The woman looked nervous while trying to organise several deliveries at once. One package slipped from her hands and landed on the floor.
"I am so sorry," the receptionist said quickly as she bent to pick it up.
Seraphina crouched beside her and lifted the larger box before the young woman could struggle with it.
"There is nothing to apologise for," Seraphina said warmly.
