Chapter 16 - Sixteen

Planet of Sol,

Ashford underground base.

Omen stood rigidly watching his father unconscious in a rehabilitant glass cabin, lost in thought.

Everything happened before he could blink. A few weeks ago, the alarm in the basement where they had hidden started going off without warning. They thought it was the Crokun; however, four figures clad in long, bright crimson hoodies with a sliver mask covered in transparent crystals surrounded their father.

Stabbing him with a dagger before vanishing from sight. Omen shudders at the scene.

'The cosmic child.

They were aggressively questioning his father about some unknown child. The man kept a tight lip; as a result of this, he was stabbed, and this injury led him straight to a coma.

He had no choice but to call their mother. She was calm at first, but after listening to the whole story, her voice began to tremble.

All the woman could mutter at that moment was. "Watch him till I get back.

Omen felt helpless and exhausted. So far, the Crokun hasn't made its way to this hideout, yet they suffered the invasion of unknown origin.

'Who are they?

'What did they want from father?'

'What is the cosmic child?'

Omen sighed heavily. All this is draining him badly. Furthermore, his siblings are not making things easy for him. He could practically hear their voices outside the door.

Yet he ignored them. Their father had shown them mercy by taking them in, even when they had agreed to cut ties with their parents. This was so funny.

The door quietly opened. Omen slowly turns to the intruder. Bright amber eyes stared into his.

"Ali…

The youth in front of him crossed his arms like a creditor who has come to collect his long-overdue payment.

"I know what you're going to say,' Ali sighed. "But we can't stay here. You see what those strange people did to Father.

"We can't abandon Father in his state,' Omen frowned. "Don't you have a sense of compassion...

"Don't talk to me about compassion when the man who is lying over there had never shown us any,' Ali gritted his teeth. This was not how he intended things to turn out.

"Well, I didn't expect you or any of us to turn out like them,' Omen retorted. "What is wrong with you all?' If you're so eager to leave, where will you go?' Huh?' The Crokuns are everywhere. It's risky to be outside at this time of crisis. There is food and everything we need to get by down here. What more could you want?'

The silence was thick and suffocating like a wet wool blanket. Every breath felt like an intrusion, and the air was filled with the words of reason Omen had spilled.

However, the other twin, Amelia, entered the room.

Similar amber eyes were filled with resentment.

"Anywhere but here is much safer,' Alia stated rigidly.

Omen's eyes widened. "You can't be serious. Amelia, tell them, they will listen to you.

Amelia stared at her unconscious father coldly. "We leave tomorrow, first thing.

Omen was shaken. They were going to leave him alone with their unconscious father. This was absurd. They looked like they knew what they were doing. They seem to have figured it out.

But Omen knew they had no idea where to go. They hate seeing their father's face, which reminds them of the neglect they have suffered during their childhood.

Omen's heart tightened. It was his duty to look after his family, yet it seems like whatever he had wished back then has come back to haunt him.

"Please, you have to reconsider, the galaxy is not safe for travel at this time,' Omen calmly stated, hoping it would at least change their minds.

"You can't actually blame father for whatever reasons you paint him a monster,' Omen stood up.

"Not being able to feel empathy has its own monstrosity,' Ali retorted. "We were little and needed love; instead, we were met with indifference and cold stares that made us into what we are today.

"You can come too,' Amelia whispered.

"I can't,' Omen frowned. "Well, you all have grown up. I can't stop you from whatever your mind has set. Just be careful out there. Bear in mind that father won't let guys back in after you leave.

They all froze. That was their worst nightmare; then again, if the old man turns his back on them, they won't be surprised. The fact that they want to come back to their parents whenever they encounter problems they can't control shows the irony in their quickness to get away from them.

The three turned and left the room. Omen sat by his father's side. His hands clasped in his.

"Everything is going to be alright.

The sound of the heart monitor kept chiming in the silent room.

Omen sighed heavily. He looked around the room until his eyes caught a certain book hidden carelessly beneath a metal box.

Omen made his way over, tucking his curly red hair behind his ear. He bent over, reaching for the book. The book was thick; its cover was made from something that looked like human skin.

"What is this?'

He muttered as he turned the book. No title, nothing. He flipped it open, his eyes widened in shock, his mind going blank.

"Father, mother, what have you two done?' The horror he felt in his bones was overwhelming.
