Chapter 20 - Dinner and grooming

After shopping Daichi reached the villa. It was a large house with a wide backyard and a lush garden. Verdanturf was quiet. The League gave him this place because they needed a presence in the smaller towns. Most personnel were stationed in Mauville , Lilycove, rustboro and other big cities and with an elite 4 present most of the nearby town itself didn't need much personnel.

He went to the kitchen. He prepped pokeblocks and meals for eighteen pokemon while he made katsudon for himself. He carried the bowls to the yard , his Pokemon were too many and too big to fit in the kitchen and dinning room.

"Everyone, out," Daichi said.

Eighteen flashes hit the grass.

The Sand team landed first. Tyranitar, Hippowdon, Rhyperior, Excadrill, Flygon, and Gastrodon took the center.

The Poison team emerged next with Crobat, Drapion, Salazzle, Nidoking, Dragalge, while Gengar blended into the shadows of the garden.

The Support team filled the rest of the space. Blissey, Indeedee, and Audino stood near the porch. Staraptor perched on the fence. Snorlax and Ursaluna sat near the gate.

The yard was packed. Daichi handed out the bowls. Tyranitar let out a low rumble as he began to devour the pokeblocks and ores. Daichi stepped up and rubbed the armor on the giant's chest.

"Easy, big guy. There is extra iron ores for ya , you've earned it," Daichi murmured. Tyranitar leaned into the touch, closing its eyes.

He moved to the Poison team. Salazzle hissed playfully, flicking her tongue. Daichi reached out and scratched the top of her head, ignoring the faint sting of its toxic skin, he had built up an immunity long ago. The first time tho.... Let's not mention that...

"Don't tease Nidoking, Salazzle. He's tired," he said. He patted Nidoking's thick hide as he passed.

Over by the porch, Blissey and Audino were fussing over a smth on Ursaluna's paw. Daichi knelt beside them. He took the bear's massive paw in his hands. It was heavy and caked with dried mud.

"It's just dirt, Ursaluna , don't worry I'll clean it ," Daichi said softly. He used a damp cloth to clean the grime. The bear chuffed and licked Daichi's cheek, nearly knocking him over.

He walked over to Gengar, who was trying to steal a berry from Snorlax. Daichi caught the ghost by its ears.

"Play fair, Gengar," he scolded gently. He handed the ghost a specialized pokeblock. Gengar grinned, vanishing into his shadow with a cackle.

Finally, Daichi sat on the grass with his own bowl of katsudon. He leaned back against Snorlax's stomach. The giant Pokémon was a warm, perfect for resting on. Staraptor flew down from the fence and landed next to Daichi, nipping affectionately at his hair.

"We're staying here for a while," Daichi told them. "No more missions for a bit. Just rest."

After dinner , Daichi cleaned everything up with the help of Audino and Blissey everyone promptly went to sleep.

Daichi woke up early, he felt rested. Today was for grooming. His team looked like monsters, but they liked being clean.

He dragged a high-pressure hose into the yard where Tyranitar and Rhyperior s waiting. Daichi turned on the water. He blasted the thick dust and grit from Tyranitar's armor. The desert king closed its eyes and leaned into the spray.

"Rotate," Daichi said.

Tyranitar turned and Daichi scrubbed a stubborn patch of dirt with a stiff brush. Next was Rhyperior. The heavy plates of its hide steamed as the cold water hit. Daichi worked in silence, making sure the joints were clear of debris.

A soft metallic clicking sounded at the gate. Eleven kids stood there, gripping the bars. They stared at the massive Pokémons.

"Is that a real Tyranitar?" one boy whispered.

Daichi turned off the hose. He walked to the gate and opened it. "He's friendly, just don't touch his tail."

The kids scrambled inside. They stopped dead when they saw Staraptor. The bird stood 1.7 meters tall, preening its wings near the porch. Its crest flickered in the light. It was not a regional bird from hoenn though kanto and Johto pokemon were sometimes seen in Hoenn, Pokemon like staraptor were actually quite rare.

"Can we pet the giant fluffy bird?" a girl asked, reaching up.

Daichi whistled. Staraptor walked over. It lowered its head so the girl could reach its soft chest feathers.

"He's fast," Daichi said. "You want to play tag with him?"

He released Audino to keep an eye on them. The yard turned into chaos. The children sprinted around the garden, shrieking with laughter as Staraptor hopped after them. Audino followed them , although she looked worries that one of them would fall.

Daichi sat on a crate. He watched the kids climb over Snorlax like a hill. He watched Staraptor gently nudge a boy with its beak.

"Careful with his wings, he takes great pride in them" Daichi called out.

He went back to brushing Ursaluna. The bear watched the children with a lazy gaze. In this yard, there were no enemies nor was there any missions. Just the sun and the sound of kids playing with some of the most dangerous creatures in Hoenn. To be fair , her trainer was also one of the scariest humans she knew. Like trainer, like pokemon?

Although , her trainer does have a big soft spot for pokemon and children.
