Chapter 26 - Unseen Strike

Under the pale light of the full moon, their lips met.

For a brief moment, the chaos of Yunara, the blood, the pain—everything faded into silence. Haru felt warmth for the first time that night, a quiet reassurance that cut through the fear still lingering in his chest. Rin's hand tightened slightly against his, as if afraid he might disappear if she let go.

Then slowly, they pulled away.

Both of them avoided each other's eyes at first. A faint blush spread across Rin's face, and Haru, despite the pain burning through his body, felt his heart beating faster than before. Neither of them spoke. The silence between them wasn't awkward—it was heavy, filled with everything they didn't know how to say.

A cold wind passed through the narrow alley.

Reality returned.

Haru shifted slightly, letting out a quiet breath as he pushed himself up. His body resisted immediately. Pain surged through his back, sharp and unforgiving. His muscles trembled as he tried to stand, and for a moment, he almost collapsed again.

"…Tch…"

He forced himself up anyway.

Blood had covered through his body completely. As he straightened slightly, the moonlight revealed the deep claw marks across his back—three long, brutal lines left by the tiger years ago, now reopened and bleeding again.

Haru clenched his jaw.

I can't stop now… not here…

He looked at Rin. She was watching him closely, but there was no hesitation in her eyes.

"You're right…" Haru said slowly, his voice rough from exhaustion. "We're not going to run from this anymore."

He took a breath—too sharp, too painful.

"…We fight."

Even saying it made his chest tighten. His body wasn't ready. His breathing was uneven, his vision slightly blurred. But his eyes didn't waver.

"…But before that…" he added, pausing to steady himself, "we need a plan."

Rin nodded and pushed herself up beside him. She winced slightly as she moved, but didn't slow down.

Her eyes were firm.

We don't stop here… no matter what…

She looked at him directly and spoke without hesitation, "Yeah… but not slowly."

Haru blinked slightly.

Rin continued, her voice steady, "We fight. No holding back."

There was no doubt in her tone.

No fear.

Only resolve.

Haru stared at her for a moment.

She's already decided…

A small breath escaped him.

"…Yeah," he said quietly.

For a moment, the two of them stood there under the moonlight, both injured, both exhausted—

But ready.

In another part of Yunara…

Rai stood still, his breathing controlled, his eyes locked onto Kaizo.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Kaizo stood in front of him, body covered in blood, wounds clearly visible across his arms and chest. Blood dripped slowly from his fingers, staining the ground beneath him.

And yet—

He was smiling.

Not just smiling…

Enjoying it.

Rai's grip on his blade tightened slightly.

Why…?

He's injured… I've landed multiple hits… so why is he still standing like that?

There was no hesitation in Kaizo's stance. No weakness. No sign of slowing down.

Only confidence.

Rai's eyes narrowed.

What am I missing…?

In the next instant—

Kaizo moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

The distance between them vanished as Kaizo lunged forward, both blades flashing under the moonlight. Rai reacted immediately, stepping in and meeting the attack.

Clang!

Steel collided.

The force of the impact echoed through the empty streets. Rai twisted his wrist, redirecting the strike, and countered with a precise slash aimed at Kaizo's side.

Kaizo shifted slightly—just enough.

The blade missed.

Rai didn't stop. He followed with another strike, this time aiming for the shoulder—

Dodged.

A third attack, faster, sharper—

Blocked effortlessly.

Rai's expression hardened.

Again…

He stepped forward, increasing his speed, his movements becoming sharper, more aggressive. His blade cut through the air with precision, each strike aimed to kill, each movement calculated.

But Kaizo—

Wasn't even struggling.

He moved through the attacks like it was nothing.

A slight turn of the body.

A small step back.

A casual deflection.

It didn't feel like a fight.

It felt like Kaizo was… playing.

Rai's thoughts raced.

This doesn't make sense… my blade techniques… they're not landing…

He changed his rhythm, feinting low before striking high—

Nothing.

Kaizo avoided it again, almost lazily this time.

Rai's breathing grew slightly heavier.

What is he doing…? Why isn't anything working…?

Then suddenly—

Rai stepped back.

He needed space.

Needed to think.

But Kaizo didn't follow that rhythm.

He didn't stop.

In the very next moment, Kaizo surged forward.

Both blades came down in a crossing strike, faster than before.

Rai's eyes widened.

I can dodge this—

He moved.

But his body didn't respond fast enough.

The blades cut through.

A sharp pain tore across his side as blood spilled onto the ground.

For the first time—

Rai was hit.

Clean.

Direct.

From a distance, a single soldier watched the fight.

His eyes widened in shock, his grip loosening on his weapon.

"…He… got hit…?" he muttered under his breath.

Rai staggered slightly before dropping to one knee. Blood dripped steadily from the wound, pooling beneath him.

His breathing faltered for a second.

What… happened…?

Why… couldn't I dodge that…?

Confusion filled his mind.

He pushed himself back, forcing distance between them. His eyes lifted slowly, locking onto Kaizo once again.

Under the moonlight—

He saw him clearly.

Kaizo stood there, both blades in hand, dripping with fresh blood. His body was completely soaked—his own blood, his enemies', it didn't matter.

And his expression—

That smile.

It wasn't normal.

It wasn't human.

To Rai, in that moment—

Kaizo looked like something else entirely.

Like a demon standing in the moonlight.

Watching him.

Waiting.

To be continued…
