Chapter 18 - A Secret Message

De Luca Empire

Meanwhile, far away in Adrian's penthouse, Elara receives an encrypted signal through her intelligence network.

The message contains only a short phrase.

"Ascendant member requesting contact."

Adrian stands beside her as she opens the secure channel.

A digital avatar appears on the screen.

A woman's voice speaks through voice distortion.

"Elara."

Elara recognizes the tone instantly.

"Mila."

Mila was another Ascendant trainee years ago.

One of the few people who trained alongside Elara.

The Warning

Mila speaks quickly.

"The Meridian Circle council is splitting."

"Some members support the mastermind."

"Others believe he's becoming too dangerous."

Adrian listens carefully.

"How many?"

Mila answers.

"Five support him."

"Four oppose him."

"And three are still undecided."

Which means the balance of power is fragile.

Then Mila adds something even more serious.

"The mastermind plans to activate the Ascendant network."

Elara's eyes narrow.

"All of them?"

"Yes."

That means dozens of highly trained strategists hidden across governments and corporations could be pulled into the conflict.

The war could spread globally.

Adrian's Strategic Move

Adrian walks toward the screen.

"Why are you warning us?"

Mila answers honestly.

"Because if the mastermind controls the Ascendant network, no one will be able to stop him."

Elara understands.

This isn't loyalty.

It's survival.

Adrian nods slowly.

"Then we change the board."

He begins outlining a new strategy.

Instead of attacking Meridian Circle directly…

They will influence the undecided members.

If Adrian convinces even two council members to oppose the mastermind…

The entire organization could fracture.

And the mastermind would lose his greatest advantage.

The Mastermind's Reaction

At the same time, the mastermind receives intelligence from one of his spies.

"Elara has contacted an Ascendant member."

He smiles calmly.

"Good."

The spy looks confused.

"Good?"

"Yes."

Because the mastermind expected this.

In fact…

He planned for it.

"Elara will try to unite the Ascendant network against me."

The spy asks,

"Can she succeed?"

The mastermind leans back slowly.

"No."

Then he says something chilling.

"Because one of them already belongs to me."

In the Meridian Circle council meeting, the mastermind says he offered Adrian a place and Adrian refused.

But he knows something important:

If the council believes Adrian refused cooperation, they will see Adrian as a threat to the Circle, not just to the mastermind personally.

So the lie serves three purposes:

1) Control the Narrative

By claiming he offered Adrian membership, he makes it look like he tried diplomacy first. Now any attack appears justified.

2) Push the Council to Choose Sides

Members who fear Adrian's growing influence will feel safer supporting the mastermind.

3) Psychological Strategy

The mastermind wants Adrian to look like an outsider who rejected the system, because that makes other power brokers more willing to oppose him.

NIGHT falls over the city.

Adrian and Elara stand together in the strategy room.

A digital map shows the global positions of Ascendant members.

Each one could become:

• an ally

• a spy

• or an enemy.

Elara looks at the screen thoughtfully.

"This war just became much bigger."

Adrian nods.

"Yes."

She looks at him.

"Are we ready?"

Adrian's voice is calm but firm.

"We don't need to control the whole network."

"We just need to break his."

And somewhere in the shadows of that network…

One Ascendant member watches both sides carefully.

Waiting.

Because the next move could decide the fate of the entire Meridian Circle.

The Hidden Player

Somewhere far from the strategy room…

A dimly lit office overlooks the city skyline.

Screens glow softly in the darkness.

The Ascendant member who had been watching both sides finally speaks.

"Interesting…"

On the screen, Adrian and Elara's conversation replays.

The figure leans forward.

Not a spy.

Not exactly an ally either.

Someone far more dangerous.

A kingmaker.

The figure opens a secure communication channel.

A message appears on the screen:

To: The Mastermind

"Your prediction was correct."

"But the board is shifting faster than expected."

A moment passes.

Then the reply appears.

Mastermind:

"Do you doubt the plan?"

The watcher smiles slightly.

"No."

"I just wonder if you've noticed something."

"What?"

The figure types slowly.

"Elara isn't playing defense anymore."

Silence fills the room.

Then the Mastermind replies.

"I know."

"And that is exactly why she must be removed."

The First Strike

Back in the strategy room, the air feels heavier.

The digital world map glows across the wall-sized screen.

Small markers blink across continents—each representing a hidden member of the Ascendant Network.

Elara studies them carefully.

"Three undecided council members," she says quietly.

Adrian folds his arms.

"And three chances to break the Mastermind's control."

He taps the screen.

A profile opens.

Council Member Kaito Tanaka

Location: Tokyo

Influence: Global Financial Systems

Adrian explains,

"Kaito controls several shadow banking channels the Meridian Circle uses."

Elara's eyes sharpen.

"If he switches sides… half of the mastermind's funding collapses."

Adrian nods.

"And wars are not won with soldiers."

"They're won with resources."

Elara moves closer to the screen.

"What about the other two?"

Adrian swipes the display again.

Two more profiles appear.

Dr. Lena Volkov – Intelligence Directorate

and

General Mateo Alvarez – Strategic Operations

Elara exhales slowly.

"Money. Intelligence. Military."

Adrian finishes the thought.

"If even two of them turn against him…"

"The Mastermind loses the board."

For a moment the room is silent.

Then suddenly—

The lights flicker.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire room goes dark.

Every screen shuts down instantly.

The map disappears.

The strategy room is swallowed in darkness.

Elara's instincts activate immediately.

"Adrian."

"I know."

Emergency backup lights switch on, casting the room in dim red.

Adrian moves quickly to the control console.

He tries to restore the system.

Nothing responds.

"No response from the network."

Elara frowns.

"That's impossible."

"This system is isolated."

Adrian's voice becomes colder.

"Which means someone didn't hack it."

"They shut it down from inside."

Suddenly—

A loud alarm echoes through the building.

WARNING: SECURITY BREACH DETECTED

LEVEL THREE LOCKDOWN INITIATED

Elara looks toward the door.

"Someone's here."

Adrian opens a hidden drawer beneath the desk.

Inside are several compact weapons.

He hands one to Elara.

"Just in case."

She checks the weapon like someone who's done this many times before.

"Just in case?"

Adrian listens carefully.

In the distance…

A faint metallic sound.

The elevator doors opening.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone is moving through the building.

Elara whispers,

"He found us."

Adrian shakes his head slowly.

"No."

His expression turns darker.

"This isn't surveillance."

"This is a kill order."
