Chapter 2 - The Lieutenant

Victor Eze stood outside the office of NovaTech's

CFO, his eyes fixed on the sleek sign that read

"Adelaide Okonkwo". He took a deep breath, smoothing his suit jacket, a habitual gesture. The meeting was about to start, and he needed to be sharp. As Alex Morgan's right-hand man, Victor was the one who kept the wheels turning. He'd been with Alex since the early days, a trusted lieutenant in the making. The door opened, and Adelaide's assistant smiled. "Victor, go on in." He nodded, a brief smile, and entered. Adelaide looked up from her screen, a warm smile on her face. "Victor, thanks for coming." He took a seat, his eves scannina the room. The CFO's office wasa testament to NovaTech's success, a blend of modern design and functionality. Adelaide's eyes met his, a hint of curiosity. "What's on your mind, Victor?" He leaned forward, his voice low. "The board meeting. We need to be prepared." Adelaide nodded, her expression serious. "I've gone over the numbers. We're solid, but.."

Victor's ears pricked up. "But what?" A flicker of hesitation, then, "There are some discrepancies in the expense reports." Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Discrepancies?" Adelaide leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. "Money's been moved around, Victor. A lot of it." The room seemed to hold its breath. Victor's mind racing, connecting the dots. Who was behind it? And why?

Adelaide's eyes were on him, waiting for a response. He took a deep breath, his expression neutral. "Let's get the team on it. I want to know who's responsible." The meeting was just starting, and the gloves were off. Victor stood up, his movements fluid. "I'II talk to Alex." Adelaide nodded, a silent understanding passing between them. The game was on, and Victor was ready. He left the office, his eyes scanning the hallway. Who was playing, and what were the stakes? The answers waited, and Victor would find them. He pulled out his phone, typing a quick message.

"Meeting's on. Get the team ready." The response came back, a single word: "Understood." Victor's eyes narrowed. The battle lines were being drawn.

He walked back of his office, he mind racing. The betrayal was closer than he thought.

The hallway seemed to stretch on forever, the faces blurring together. Victor's focus was on one thing: finding the truth. He entered his office, a flurry of activity waiting for him. His team was already on the case, digging into the financials.

Victor joined them, his eyes scanning the screens.

The data poured in, a river of numbers and codes.

He dove in, his mind racing. The clock ticked away, the tension building. They were getting close, Victor could feel it. The betrayal was a thread, and they were pulling it. The room fell silent, a collective gasp. Victor's eyes snapped up.

"What is it?" His team leader, a young analyst, looked up, her eyes wide. "We found something, sir. A shell company. It's linked to..." Victor's heart skipped a beat. "Who?" The analyst swallowed.

"Alex Morgan." The room fell silent, the air thick with shock. Victor's mind reeled. Alex? No way.

The man he knew was a visionary, a leader. Not a thief. But the evidence was there. Victor's gut twisted. What was going on? He took a deep breath, his expression neutral. "Keep digging. I want to know everything." The team nodded, a renewed sense of purpose. Victor turned away, his eyes closing. The game was getting dirty. He opened his eyes, a new resolve burning within.

He'd find the truth, no matter what. The lieutenant was on the case.

The phone buzzed, breaking the silence. Victor's eyes snapped to the screen. A message from an unknown number: "Meet me at the usual place.

We need to talk." Victor's eyes narrowed. Who was it? And what did they know? He typed a response, his fingers flying across the screen.

"Who is this?" The response came back, a single word: "Trust me." Victor's gut twisted. Could he trust anyone? He stood up, his movements fluid.

"I'll be back." His team nodded, their eyes on the screens. Victor left the office, the hallway a blur.

He was walking into the unknown, but he'd face it head-on. The game was on, and Victor was all in.

He entered the elevator, his eyes fixed on the doors. The betrayal was closer than he thought.

The doors opened, and Victor stepped out. The city waited, a sea of faces and secrets. He took a deep breath, his eyes scanning the crowd. The game was on, and he'd play to win.
