Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Investigation

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have unlimited power?

The infinite potential anyone could have if they weren't confined to their body... I thought about that every day in my previous life.

I was born incompetent, lacking the ability to do the thing I longed for most, so as a seeker, I tried to find ways to combat the injustice done to me.

It was impossible, though.

Just like the laws of gravity and motion, it's axiomatic that for magic to occur, there must be mana.

To use mana, one must possess a degree of it. As such, an incompetent person cannot use magic at all, not even activate a magical tool or artifact, since it requires an injection of mana to function.

But I discovered the next best thing. If one has even the smallest fraction of mana, they can achieve feats far greater than their current limitations. By using the surrounding mana through attracting your own, you can create magic that is far more powerful and efficient than usual.

have named this technique Spellcraft, and it is one of my most coveted and prized magical inventions.

"urghhh..." I groaned as I slowly opened my eyes.

My ears felt like they were ringing loudly, and my whole body ached. I could barely move, which made me wonder what all this nonsense was about.

"H-He's awake, my lady!" I heard someone shout.

Their voices sounded feminine, which confused me even more. I had a girlfriend already, but... no, it couldn't be her. Besides, my mind was so sharp that I would have recognized the voice if I knew who it belonged to.

Yet, I didn't know who was speaking.

"W-What's going on...?"

"My baby... oh, my baby!!!" I heard another woman say.

My eyes were still blurry, so I couldn't see.

Her face was clear. In fact, my whole head was buzzing and blurry. I felt like I'd forgotten something important, but I couldn't point to it clearly.

I blinked and struggled to try to regain my sight and stop the loud ringing in my ears. Although my body wasn't moving as I wanted, I had to concentrate and control.

And when I opened my eyes, I could see much more clearly.

From my position, I appeared to be lying on the bed, and the strange woman who had called me her child was looking at me with tears in her eyes. She looked very attractive, but her sad face almost broke my heart.

Why was she looking at me with those eyes...? Who was this beauty? I asked myself.

At once, a little shame washed over me. The lady in front of me was young enough to be my daughter, but what was I thinking?

Suddenly, the woman reached out her hands toward me, trying to lift me up. I was confused when I saw such an action. I tried to protest, but my lips wouldn't respond; no, I felt like I couldn't even speak yet.

And instead of hearing my own voice, I heard a child murmuring

Who on earth is this?

When her hands touched my back, I felt a warm tingle on my skin. It felt good. But strangely, her hands seemed to be touching a wide area of my back, but before I could fully understand the situation, I slowly felt myself being pulled upwards.

W-What the hell?!" my mind raced.

"Ah, you're safe... my beautiful baby!" the woman cried, laughing as she pulled me into her embrace.

Hearing these words, a sharp sensation swept over my mind, and slowly all the confusion I had been feeling vanished instantly.

The truth had manifested, as well as the memories of the past two days I had spent in my new form. A smile spread across my face as I thought of the events of the previous night, as well as the absolute truth that governed my life at this moment.

I had been reincarnated!

A few days had passed since the incident, and frankly, my time.

An eventful day followed.

Emergency calls only. Although I realized my family was important and wealthy, I didn't know just how much until the deed was done.

Apparently, my father is a high-ranking nobleman in this empire, wherever that may be... which makes me a very important person, even as a child.

The reason I haven't seen my father yet is because of his busy life in the capital, and it seems he won't be coming home anytime soon.

As for the most puzzling part, the assassin turned out to have disguised himself as a servant and managed to blend in for weeks unnoticed, waiting for the house to let its guards go before making a move.

I often wondered why the assassin hadn't used magic to kill me, but after spending the rest of my days actively investigating from my baby's crib or my mother's very comfortable lap, I discovered a mechanism in the house.

A magic-detection artifact!

I didn't notice it when I first materialized, because I was preoccupied with more important things, and besides, the model looked completely different from what I was used to. However,

When I began my active investigation, I found him.

Anti-magic is just a theory, because all magic comes from mana and involves different casting summers. Therefore, to protect their families from dangerous magic users, magic-detection devices were created.

Simply put, they allowed the user to detect the use of magic in their immediate vicinity.

[a/n] Think of it like a fire alarm.

So, if anyone is using magic in the vicinity, they must be punished. The unauthorized use of magic will be immediately detected, and the offender will be caught right away.

The assassin approached me with a knife to finish his job and avoid the magic being detected. However, the alarm still went off... and it was because of me!

I remember using magic to kill that man, and while the rush and thrill have stayed with me up to this point, I couldn't repeat it. Doing it recklessly would set off the alarm, and it would be discovered.

Even now, the maids and servants look at me with the strange, curious expressions my mother often mentioned.

And it will be found out.

So far, the maids and servants look at me with strange, curious expressions. My mother has often mentioned that it was a miracle they found the murderer's body next to my bed and wondered what could have happened.

I can only imagine the shock on their faces if they realize that a seemingly harmless baby, "barely a week old," was the one who dug the hole they found in the man's body.

But that will never happen. I have escaped suspicion so far because it was unthinkable that I would do such a thing in the first place. Therefore, everyone attributed it to "the Governor's judgment."

Furthermore, since that night, I have been under 24-hour surveillance. My freedom has been further restricted.

However, this has not been a problem for me. Why? Because... being steady is exactly what I need at this moment.
