Millennial Nine-Tailed Fox

History

The fox spirit is one of the most popular creatures in Chinese mythology, as familiar in Chinese folklore as leprechauns are in Irish fairy tales. Every child knows stories of foxes that take the form of beautiful women and deceive men into marrying them. In contemporary Asian pop culture, there are films and TV shows featuring seductive fox women. However, these interpretations are simplistic and fail to give the fox proper credit for its place in Chinese history, legends, and literature.

"At fifty years of age, a fox can transform into a woman. At one hundred, it can become a beautiful young girl, a sorcerer, or a seducer; it can know events occurring a thousand li away; it can bewitch people, leading them astray and causing them to lose their reason. At one thousand, it can communicate with Heaven and become a celestial fox." — Kuo Po, A.D. 324
