Chapter 235 - Chapter 235: A Week Begins to Shift

After that, things went smoothly, and over the following week he attended class while making himself stand out with how thoroughly he already knew the material for the entire year. In Flitwick's class, for instance, they were learning the dancing feet spell, "tarantallegra." It was a basic charm that caused whatever person or object it struck to move its lower parts, usually the legs, in a random way that resembled dancing. Julian, however, altered the spell slightly so that instead of only affecting the lower half, it made the entire target's body spasm wildly like some sort of unhinged breakdancer.-

As far as Julian was concerned, detention was honestly hilarious because during that time he was basically serving as Flitwick's assistant and helping teach either the third years or the first years depending on the day. If he was being honest, the first-year classes were his favorite, since they looked at his versions of the spells they were learning with complete awe. Because Luna was in that class, though, she was also the one who made sure to inform her classmates that Julian was a freak of nature even compared to the students in his own year, so they should not try to measure themselves against what he could do. Julian could not even argue with that, because she was not wrong.-

Even so, simply knowing that such things were possible was enough to make the students put much more effort into mastering what they were being taught. The third-year class was another matter entirely, since most of them more or less ignored Julian whenever he tried to help, despite the fact that he had read through all of their textbooks as well. Flitwick never commented on it, however, because there was nothing to be done about opinions people had already formed. The most important event, however, happened late Friday night at exactly midnight, and it involved the system. [IMPORTANT ANOUNCEMENT! System has finished it's adaptation to the host and is now ready to evolve for better utilization. Proceed Y/N?]-

This completely caught Julian off guard, because he had not even known the system was capable of evolving, much less that it had been adapting itself to him in the first place. 'How long will this take?' he thought, hoping the system would understand him the way it normally did whenever he interacted with it. [Approximately one hundred and sixty eight hours.] the system replied, making Julian suck in a sharp breath because that was a full week. 'Fine, do it. I just hope this is worth it.' he thought at last, and the system sent him one final message. [Affirmative, Starting evolution!].-

It was a strange sensation for Julian, because he could feel a part of his soul he had never noticed before begin to "heat up," for lack of a better term. Considering it seemed capable of something as absurd as crossing between universes, one would expect it to occupy a huge portion of his soul, but instead it was tiny. Tiny to the point of being as small as a single strand of hair. 'Makes me wonder who created the thing?' he thought before rolling over and trying to fall back asleep, though he failed because his mind refused to settle down.-

By the time the first rays of sunlight began to rise over the edge of the world, he could only sigh, get dressed, and leave the dormitory. Thanks to his elven physique, he did not actually need to sleep every single day, but he still usually did it out of habit, so he was not tired despite barely sleeping that night. As he stepped out of the common room, he casually made his way down the moving staircases and greeted the various paintings he had gotten to know during the previous year. Since most of the castle was still asleep, the halls were very quiet as Julian walked through them.-

Not long after, he stepped out of the castle and felt the gentle warmth of the sun on his face, smiling as he crossed the courtyard and headed toward the Black Lake, which gleamed with its usual dark green shine. Pulling his broom out of Greed, he transfigured his clothes into a wetsuit, mounted the broom, and shot up into the sky. At this point, he no longer cared whether the rest of the students discovered how skilled he was at flying, since Madam Hooch and the rest of the staff were probably already aware anyway. The only real annoyance would be his housemates trying to pester him into joining the quidditch team.-

With that in mind, he spent a bit of time stretching in the air before flying out above the Black Lake and storing the broom back in Greed. Without the broom there to support him, Julian dropped straight down into the center of the lake. The salty water stung his eyes a little at first, but he adjusted to it quickly, and thanks to his night vision and powerful elvish sight, he could still see perfectly well. Forming a ring of oxygen around his mouth and nose, Julian dove downward toward the mermaid city below him.
