Chapter 7 - The life story of Maryam (a)

Maryam (peace be upon her) is one of the most honored and respected women in Islamic history. She is the mother of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) and is the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur'an. In fact, an entire chapter of the Qur'an, Surah Maryam, is named after her. She is remembered for her purity, faith, patience, and complete trust in Allah.

Her Birth and Dedication to Allah

Maryam was born to a pious family from the lineage of Imran. Her mother, known as the wife of Imran, prayed to Allah for a child and promised that the child would be dedicated to the service of Allah. When Maryam was born, her mother named her Maryam and sought Allah's protection for her and her future offspring from Shaytan (Satan).

Although her mother had expected a son, she accepted Allah's will with gratitude. Allah chose Maryam for a special purpose and blessed her from a very young age.

Her Childhood and Worship

Maryam grew up under the care of Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him), who was her guardian. She spent her childhood in worship and devotion inside a special prayer chamber. She was known for her modesty, purity, and deep faith.

The Qur'an mentions that whenever Zakariya entered her chamber, he found provisions of food with her. When he asked her where it came from, she replied that it was from Allah. This showed that Allah was directly providing for her and honoring her.

The Announcement of a Miracle

One day, the angel Jibril (Gabriel, peace be upon him) appeared before Maryam in the form of a man. She was frightened and sought refuge in Allah. The angel told her that he had come to give her the glad tidings of a pure son.

Maryam was surprised and asked how she could have a son when no man had touched her. The angel replied that it was the will of Allah, and for Allah, nothing is impossible. This miraculous birth would be a sign for humanity and a mercy from Allah.

The Birth of Prophet Isa (Jesus)

When Maryam became pregnant, she withdrew from her people and went to a distant place. During the pains of childbirth, she rested under a palm tree and felt deep distress, worrying about what people would say.

Allah comforted her and provided her with water and fresh dates from the palm tree. She gave birth to Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) miraculously, without a father.

When she returned to her people carrying the baby, they accused her falsely. Maryam remained silent, as she had been commanded by Allah to fast from speaking. She pointed to the baby. Then, by Allah's miracle, the newborn Isa spoke from the cradle, declaring that he was a servant of Allah and a prophet. This cleared Maryam of all accusations and proved her innocence.

Her Status in Islam

Maryam holds a very high position in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Maryam is one of the greatest women of Paradise. The Qur'an states that Allah chose her, purified her, and preferred her above the women of all worlds.

Her life teaches us lessons of:

Faith in difficult times

Patience during trials

Modesty and purity

Complete trust in Allah's plan

Conclusion

Maryam (peace be upon her) is a shining example of righteousness and devotion. Her story is not only about the miraculous birth of Prophet Isa (peace be upon him), but also about strength, courage, and unwavering faith in Allah. She remains an inspiration for believers across generations.
