Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine — Lingering Shadows

The sun was sinking when they reached the outer road.

Orange light spilled across the stone walls of Ardenfall, turning the high banners into long rippling shadows against the city's towers. The wind carried the faint smell of roasted meat and lantern oil — remnants of the celebrations that had filled the streets only a few days before.

Rowan rode at the front of the returning column.

Behind him, the soldiers followed in quiet formation. Armor scratching against the saddle with each shift. Horses breathed slow clouds into the cool evening air.

Further back rode Lysander.

Restrained, but not chained.

The suppressor bands around his wrists caught the fading sunlight now and then, the etched sigils along the iron surface glowing faintly before dulling again.

No one spoke.

The forest road eventually widened into the outer approach to the city gates.

Ardenfall was alive.

Even at dusk.

Fragments of the celebration still lingered across the streets. Some banners still hung from balconies and shop fronts — blue cloth edged in gold, the crest of House Ardenfall painted proudly across their centers.

A group of children ran across the street ahead of them, chasing one another with sticks and shouting something about knights and monsters. One of them nearly collided with a merchant cart before their mother shouted sharply and pulled them back.

Further down the street, laughter rose from a tavern doorway where a handful of soldiers leaned against the frame with mugs in hand.

Someone was playing a fiddle somewhere beyond the square.

The city breathed.

Relieved.

Victorious.

Unaware.

Rowan saw all of it.

But felt none of it.

His mind was somewhere else entirely.

The forest fight replayed at the back of his mind.

The carcass of the stag.

The broken ritual circle carved crudely into the earth.

The crystal fragments scattered across blood-dark soil.

The pack of wolves.

Their unnatural coordination.

The Alpha's void-dark eye.

And the moment the air had shifted.

The moment the beast's balance slipped, just enough for his blade to find the blind angle.

And then—

The darkness drifting toward Lysander.

The suppressor sigils humming.

Dimming.

Brightening.

As if something unseen had pressed against them.

Rowan exhaled slowly through his nose.

None of it had made sense.

Not fully.

Not yet.

But Lucien would know what to do with it.

He had to.

The castle gates opened as they approached.

The guards stationed along the wall straightened immediately when they saw Rowan returing.

"Second Prince Rowan returning from eastern patrol!" one of them called.

The gates parted.

The column entered the courtyard.

Stable hands hurried forward to take the horses while soldiers began removing their helmets, sweat-dark hair clinging to their temples.

Rowan swung down from the saddle, boots striking the stone. His shoulder still burned where the Alpha's claw had torn through the leather.

Two soldiers were already helping one of the wounded men down from his horse, the man gritting his teeth as he tried to keep weight off his leg. A castle surgeon hurried across the courtyard with two attendants, already motioning them toward the infirmary.

Rowan watched them for a moment before turning away.

Before he could speak to the unit commander, one of the palace guards approached with a short bow.

"Your Highness."

Rowan turned.

"His Highness Crown Prince Lucien requests your presence."

Rowan frowned slightly.

"Now?"

"Yes, Your Highness."

The guard glanced briefly toward Lysander behind him.

"The Crown Prince has also requested the presence of the prisoner."

Rowan's expression hardened for a fraction of a second.

But he said nothing.

"Very well then."

The rest of the soldiers were dismissed to the barracks.

Two royal enforcers stepped forward to take hold of the chains attached to Lysander's suppressor collar.

Not pulling.

Just guiding.

Rowan began walking toward the inner halls of the castle.

Lysander followed.

They did not speak.

The smaller council chamber was already lit when they entered.

This was not the grand throne hall used for public audiences.

It was quieter.

Narrower.

A long polished table sat in the center of the room with several chairs arranged along either side. Maps and sealed reports rested neatly across its surface.

Lucien stood near the far end of the table when they entered.

He was still in his formal coat. The silver embroidery along the sleeves caught the candlelight faintly as he turned.

His posture was perfectly composed.

Hands folded behind his back.

Expression calm.

Rowan stepped forward first and bowed his head briefly.

"Your Highness."

Lucien inclined his head in return.

"Rowan."

His gaze moved once toward Lysander.

Then back.

"Report."

Rowan did not waste time.

"We located the disturbance roughly two miles inside the eastern forest."

He stepped closer to the table and set a small cloth bundle onto the wood surface. When he unfolded it, several jagged fragments of dark crystal rolled slightly against the grain.

"These were recovered from the center of the clearing."

Lucien stepped forward slightly.

"Explain."

Rowan did.

From the beginning.

The mutilated stag.

The blackened veins along its hide.

The ritual markings carved into the ground.

The broken circle.

The wolves.

Their unnatural coordination.

Their Alpha.

The void-dark eye.

The fight.

And finally the residue of dark energy that had drifted toward Lysander after the beast fell.

Lucien listened without interruption.

His face revealed very little.

From where he stood beside the guards, Lysander watched him carefully.

The Crown Prince's expression was measured, thoughtful.

But something about it felt… prepared.

As if none of the details Rowan spoke were truly unexpected.

Lysander's gaze lingered there for a moment longer than necessary.

Then Lucien began asking questions.

"Was the ritual circle complete?"

"No."

"Broken by time or force?"

"Sloppy work," Rowan answered. "The lines were uneven."

Lucien nodded slightly.

"The wolves."

"Seven maybe eight," Rowan said. "Plus the Alpha."

"Injuries?"

"Three soldiers wounded. None fatal."

"And the two of you?" Lucien asked calmly. "Any injuries?"

"Nothing serious." Rowan answered.

Lucien's eyes lingered briefly on Rowan's shoulder before he nodded once.

Then his eyes shifted.

Toward Lysander.

"Prince Lysander."

The title landed heavily in the room.

Rowan's jaw tightened instantly.

Lucien continued as if nothing had changed.

"Your observations."

Lysander stepped forward slightly.

"The ritual was not designed for summoning."

Lucien's brow lifted faintly.

"No?"

"No."

"What then?"

"Observation."

Rowan glanced sideways.

Lucien remained still.

"Clarify."

"It was attempting to stabilize corrupted energy long enough to study its behavior."

Lucien's fingers tapped once against the table.

"Successful?"

"No."

"Why?"

"The circle was poorly structured."

A pause.

"And the Alpha?"

"An unintended byproduct."

Lucien studied him for a moment longer.

Then nodded slowly.

"That will be all."

He turned back to Rowan.

"Have the guards return Prince Lysander to his holding chamber."

Rowan's scowl was not subtle now.

But he did not argue.

Lucien continued calmly.

"And you should rest."

Rowan frowned.

"You look like you've spent the afternoon wrestling wolves."

Rowan said nothing.

Lucien's tone softened slightly.

"Tomorrow will require your presence."

That was all he said.

No explanation.

No elaboration.

Rowan nodded once.

"As you command."

The meeting was over.

The corridor outside the chamber was quiet.

Two guards took hold of the chains attached to Lysander's collar and began guiding him toward the lower wing.

Rowan followed them halfway down the hall.

Then stopped.

"Wait."

The guards halted.

Rowan stepped forward.

"You interfered."

Lysander looked at him calmly.

"I did not."

"The Alpha shifted."

"Yes."

"You altered it."

"I adjusted its trajectory."

The phrasing made Rowan's teeth grind.

"You were ordered not to cast."

"The correction required minimal energy."

Rowan stepped closer.

"You think I didn't see it?"

Lysander said nothing.

"I saw the wolves near you."

His voice dropped lower.

"They couldn't even reach you."

Two bodies lay in Rowan's memory.

Both killed cleanly.

Both without signs of struggle.

Rowan folded his arms.

"You're restrained."

"Yes."

"Yet somehow you still found ways to involve yourself."

A pause.

Then Lysander spoke quietly.

"You survived."

Rowan's eyes narrowed.

"That wasn't your decision to make."

"No."

Another pause.

"It was already happening."

Rowan held his gaze for a long moment.

Looking for something.

Pride.

Defiance.

Mockery.

There was none.

Just that same unsettling stillness.

Rowan exhaled sharply and stepped back.

"Take him."

The guards resumed walking.

Chains shifted softly against stone.

Lysander did not look back.

Rowan remained standing in the corridor long after they disappeared around the corner.

The forest clearing replayed again in his mind.

The blind angle.

The shifting air.

The wolves that never reached Lysander.

And the dark energy that had drifted toward him.

Something about it still didn't sit right.

Not the wolves.

Not the ritual.

Not even the Alpha.

Someone had tried to study corruption.

And if they learned to control it—

Rowan rubbed a hand across his face.

Tomorrow would be another long day.

But the forest had already left something behind.

Something that hadn't burned away with the ritual circle.

Something lingering in the shadows.
