Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 – Exploration of the Ancient Relic

The morning sun bathed the Inner Sect in a soft golden light, but the calm was deceptive. Beyond the distant mountains, the air shimmered with strange energy. Scouts had reported the awakening of an ancient relic—a source of power predating even the oldest sects. Li Tian, standing atop the cliff overlooking the horizon, felt it tugging at the Devouring Core.

"This relic… it calls to the Core," he murmured. The golden-white-purple energy pulsed in response, resonating with the faint ripple of power in the distance.

Han Xue appeared beside him, her cloak fluttering in the wind. "It's dangerous. No mortal should attempt to approach it without preparation. Ancient guardians, traps, and unknown spirits… they will test everything you've learned."

Li Tian's eyes gleamed. "Then I will test them first. Every challenge is an opportunity. The Core… let's see what lies beyond the limits we've reached."

Entering the Ancient Relic

The path to the relic was treacherous. Mountains split open by ancient forces, rivers glowing with faint elemental light, and winds that whispered secrets of forgotten civilizations.

As Li Tian and Han Xue approached, the Devouring Core acted almost independently, sensing hidden dangers and neutralizing traps before they could harm them. Golden-white-purple energy flowed outward in a protective barrier, absorbing and converting residual energies from the environment.

The entrance to the relic pulsed with energy, a massive stone arch engraved with glowing symbols. As Li Tian stepped forward, the air thickened, and the Core hummed louder.

"It's alive," Han Xue whispered. "This place… it's not just a relic. It's a realm."

Li Tian nodded, feeling the Core extend beyond his physical body, probing, analyzing, and harmonizing with the ancient energies surrounding them.

Trials of the Ancient Realm

Immediately upon entry, the terrain shifted. Paths rearranged themselves, and elemental storms erupted at random. Shadow beasts of enormous size emerged, their forms semi-transparent, almost spectral.

Li Tian did not hesitate. The Devouring Core flowed with him, absorbing energy from the air, redirecting elemental attacks, and striking with pinpoint precision.

Lightning from above was drawn into the Core, converted into a controlled surge that eliminated multiple shadow beasts at once.

Earth and wind fused into spikes and currents, creating barriers and launching precise counterattacks.

Void energy attempted to distort reality itself, but the Core adapted, stabilizing the environment and neutralizing temporal anomalies.

Han Xue observed in awe. "I've never seen the Core respond so intuitively. It's… alive."

Li Tian's lips curved in a faint smile. "Not just alive… it's evolving."

Discovery of the Hidden Chamber

Deeper inside, a massive chamber awaited. Ancient runes floated in the air, spinning slowly around a pedestal that radiated golden-violet light. The relic itself hovered above the pedestal—a crystal-like core, pulsing rhythmically as if aware of Li Tian's presence.

The Devouring Core resonated immediately, its energy merging partially with the relic, sending waves of insight into Li Tian's mind. He felt knowledge of long-lost cultivation techniques, forgotten elements, and ancient strategies flowing through him.

Han Xue's eyes widened. "This… this is more than power. It's a library, a weapon, and a test… all in one."

Li Tian reached out, letting the Devouring Core interface with the relic. The golden-white-purple energy swirled violently, creating patterns of light that reshaped the chamber. He could feel the Core's intelligence evolving, adapting, and absorbing new elemental principles.

Encounter with the Ancient Guardian

Suddenly, the chamber darkened. A massive spectral figure materialized—an Ancient Guardian, its form shifting between elements, radiating authority and power beyond comprehension.

"You dare approach the relic of the ancients?" the Guardian's voice thundered. "Only those worthy may absorb its secrets. Fail, and your essence will be devoured."

Li Tian stepped forward, Devouring Core glowing at maximum. "I do not seek to defile this place. I seek to grow, to understand, and to surpass my limits. Core, respond!"

The Devouring Core flared violently, its consciousness intertwining with Li Tian's mind. Golden-white-purple energy surged outward, clashing with the Guardian's elemental attacks.

The Guardian struck with firestorms, lightning chains, and crushing earthwaves.

Li Tian's Core absorbed fragments of the attacks, converting them into controlled energy pulses that countered, trapped, and destabilized the Guardian.

The battle was not only physical but mental, a clash of strategy, instinct, and intelligence.

After minutes that seemed like hours, the Guardian paused. Its form shimmered, then bowed slightly. "You… are worthy. The relic's knowledge and power are yours to explore, but beware—the world beyond will test you further. The Core will grow… but so will your enemies."

Li Tian exhaled, the chamber glowing softly around him. "Thank you. I will not waste this opportunity."

Emergence and New Power

As Li Tian and Han Xue exited the relic, the Devouring Core had clearly evolved. Its energy now radiated in more intricate spirals, resonating with multiple elemental forces simultaneously, enhancing absorption, prediction, and battlefield manipulation.

Han Xue looked at him, awe in her eyes. "Li Tian… the Core… it's beyond anything we've seen. You're no longer just a mortal cultivator—you're shaping the rules of the world itself."

Li Tian's expression hardened, determination blazing. "The relic was only the beginning. The world holds greater threats, hidden powers, and ancient secrets. But with the Core… nothing can stop us. Not even the heavens themselves."

As they returned to the Inner Sect, the faint ripple of energy from the relic still lingered in the air. The Devouring Core hummed, alive, aware, and ready for the challenges that awaited beyond the mountains and the distant horizon.
