In the Pokémon world, forests are often named with a pragmatic simplicity—usually after the nearest city. Kanto has its Viridian Forest, Hoenn its Petalburg Woods, and now, Ash and his companions found themselves deep within the emerald embrace of the Eterna Forest.
As a massive woodland, it is a haven for Bug and Grass-types. Among them, the most iconic is the Combee, a Pokémon unique to Sinnoh. Their role here mirrors that of Beedrill in Kanto, though their temperaments couldn't be more different.
"They look so hardworking!" Dawn noted, kneeling to watch a trio of Combee hovering over a cluster of blossoms. She reached out to poke one of the tiny, honey-colored faces.
"Bee~" The Combee merely gave her a flat look, flapped its three wings, and moved to the next flower. It had no time for distractions; it had a hive to provide for.
"Don't disturb them, Dawn," Brock said, his voice tinged with a rare note of melancholy. "The life of a Combee is quite tragic. They are the gentle laborers of the forest, but they are constantly bullied. Beautifly steal their nectar, Teddiursa raid their nests for honey, and Mothim sneak in at night while they sleep to rob them blind."
"That's horrible!" Dawn's heart sank. She looked at the tiny Pokémon with newfound sympathy, seeing the bitter struggle behind their industrious facade.
The mood remained somber as they continued, even after meeting a girl named Yamiko whose Mothim was actively tracking "Terrifying Sweetness"—a legendary honey. Fearing for the local Combee, Dawn practically dragged Ash and Brock away from the encounter. To help her recover her spirits, Ash decided it was time to set up a training camp in a nearby clearing.
The Roster Shuffle and the Senior's "Rebellion"
Ash released his current team, the light of five Poké Balls illuminating the grass. Sceptile materialized with its trademark twig, Swellow circled overhead, Snorlax immediately began to snore, while Turtwig and Aipom looked on eagerly.
"Alright, everyone! Training starts now!"
Swellow: Assigned to master Work Up (Self-Motivation). While its speed is elite (Base 125), its raw power needs a boost to keep up with the Sinnoh heavyweights.
Snorlax: Tasked with learning High Horsepower to increase its Ground-type coverage.
Pikachu: Assigned to practice Flash (Shinny). After the dark cave incident with Suicune, Ash realized he needed a reliable light source.
Aipom: Sent to grind for experience, aiming to master Double Hit and finally evolve into Ambipom.
This left the two Grass-types: the seasoned elder, Sceptile, and the promising rookie, Turtwig.
"Sceptile, I'm entrusting you with teaching Turtwig how to use Bullet Seed (Seed Machine Gun)," Ash said, gesturing to the little turtle.
"Cha...?" Sceptile stopped chewing its twig and looked at Ash with a look of utter, deadpan shock. Having sensed Ash's awakened Aura, it chose to communicate directly through their mental link.
("Entrusting me? Boss, did you forget? I learned Bullet Seed from you back in Hoenn. You were the one spitting seeds at a tree to show me how it's done!")
"Grass?" Turtwig's head tilted so far it nearly fell over. It looked at Ash with wide, questioning eyes. My Trainer... is a Seed Machine Gun master?
"Ah... well, when you put it that way..." Ash rubbed the back of his neck, unable to refute the memory. He thought briefly of a future Rowlet in Alola who would eventually face the same training.
("Boss, I'm busy mastering that new move you gave me yesterday. I'll leave the rookie to you!") With a flicker of green, Sceptile vanished into the high branches to practice in private.
"This is going to be a headache," Ash muttered, looking down at the expectant Turtwig. "Alright, little guy. If Sceptile won't do it, I guess I have to show you the 'True Newbie' method."
Ash stood up, adjusted his hat, and prepared to demonstrate the art of the projectile seed himself.
