Chapter 67 - When the Binding Broke

The mountain screamed. Not with the voice of a beast. Not with the sound of stone. It screamed like something that had held its breath for centuries and could no longer endure the weight of silence. The labyrinth answered. A thunderous crack split the earth beneath Aurora's feet. The towering black monolith beside her lurched violently before sinking several inches into the ground. Ancient carvings shattered. Dust burst into the air so thick that the moon disappeared behind it. For one terrifying heartbeat... everything stood still. Then the entire labyrinth began collapsing.

"RUN!" Lucien's voice exploded across the maze. The standing stones moved faster than Aurora had ever seen. They no longer glided. They fell. Massive slabs of black rock crashed into one another, filling the mountain with deafening echoes. Ancient corridors disappeared beneath avalanches of stone while new fissures ripped open across the earth. People screamed. Real screams. Not memories. Not echoes. The survivors. Aurora's heart dropped. "Gideon!" She sprinted through the collapsing passage. The ground split beneath her boots. She jumped just as the stone behind her disappeared into a bottomless darkness. The impact jarred every bone in her body. She rolled across broken rock and forced herself upright.

The sight before her stole her breath. The labyrinth was dying. Entire sections of the maze were sinking into the mountain. Ancient walls toppled like trees in a storm. The returned no longer stood in perfect formation. For the first time... they looked afraid. Some wandered aimlessly. Some clawed desperately at the collapsing stones. Others simply stood frozen, staring at the great black doorway as though waiting for an order that would never come. "They're... confused..." Aurora whispered. Lucien appeared beside her. "No." His silver eyes remained fixed upon the collapsing maze. "They've lost their purpose."

Another explosion of stone echoed nearby. Aurora turned. A group of survivors stood trapped beneath a leaning monolith. A mother desperately shielded two young children while three men strained against the enormous slab, unable to move it. The stone groaned. It was slipping. "Aurora!" The woman cried. "Please!" Aurora never hesitated. "The Veil..." Lucien caught her wrist before she could summon it. "No." She looked at him in disbelief. "They'll die!" "And if you feed the Binding again, everyone dies." The words struck her like a blade. For one impossible moment she stood frozen between two choices. Save them. Or stop Caelum. Another scream decided for her. Aurora tore free from Lucien's grip. She didn't call upon the Veil. She ran.

"Gideon!" A sword burst through the dust. Gideon. He slammed his shoulder beneath the leaning monolith. "Help me!" Aurora threw herself beside him. The stone didn't move. Elara arrived seconds later, coughing through the dust. Without a word she joined them. Then Darian. Then their mother. One by one the remaining survivors rushed forward. No magic. No ancient power. Only desperate hands pushing against centuries-old stone. The mountain trembled. Cracks raced through the slab. "Again!" Gideon roared. Everyone pushed together. The stone shifted. Just enough. The trapped mother dragged her children free. The men stumbled after them. The instant they escaped the monolith crashed into the earth. The impact shook the entire mountain. Aurora collapsed to one knee, gasping for air. The rescued woman threw her arms around her children, sobbing. "Thank you..." Aurora barely heard her. Her eyes searched the summit. Caelum.

He was still walking. Unhurried. Calm. While the world collapsed around him. His black coat swayed gently in the wind. Dust never touched him. Stone never blocked his path. He looked less like a man... and more like an inevitable ending. "You knew this would happen." Aurora shouted. Her voice echoed across the dying labyrinth. Caelum stopped. Slowly... he looked back. "I did." "You planned it!" "No." His voice carried effortlessly despite the chaos. "The Binding has reached its end." Another violent tremor shook the hill. The great black doorway groaned. A crack appeared across its surface. Thin at first. Then wider. The sound that followed seemed impossible. Ancient stone grinding against ancient stone. The doorway was moving.

Every returned turned toward it. Not one looked at Caelum. Not one looked at Aurora. They stared only at the doorway. Some fell to their knees. Others covered their faces. One elderly survivor whispered through trembling lips, "Dear God..." The doors separated. Not quickly. Painfully. As though the mountain itself resisted every inch. Darkness waited beyond. No fire. No glowing light. Only endless black. Cold air rolled from the opening, carrying the scent of ancient dust and forgotten centuries. Nobody moved. Aurora stared into the darkness. "That's impossible..." Then... she saw them. Steps. Black stone steps descending into the earth. One after another. Vanishing into darkness. The doorway had never been an exit. It had always been an entrance.

A long silence settled over everyone. Even the mountain seemed to pause. One of the survivors whispered, "What's down there?" No one answered. Not immediately. Caelum slowly approached the open doorway. He stopped at its edge. His golden eyes looked into the darkness below. For the first time since Aurora had known him... his confidence gave way to something quieter. Not fear. Respect. His voice was almost gentle. "The beginning." Lucien closed his eyes. Aurora noticed the pain crossing his face. "You've seen it." Lucien nodded. "Once." "And?" "I prayed I would never see it again." Those words frightened Aurora more than the collapsing mountain. If Lucien feared what lay beneath... what hope did any of them have?

A child began crying. Another survivor fell to his knees. "We can't go down there." "We'll die." "This place is cursed." Panic spread through the crowd. People backed away from the staircase. Some turned toward the collapsing labyrinth, hoping to escape. A tremendous roar answered them. The only remaining path out of the maze disappeared beneath tons of falling stone. The mountain had sealed itself. There was only one way left. Down. Aurora looked at the survivors. They were exhausted. Covered in blood and dust. Children clung to their parents. The elderly could barely stand. Gideon rested a reassuring hand on a frightened boy's shoulder. Elara wrapped her arm around an injured woman to keep her from falling. Their mother gathered the remaining survivors together. "No one walks alone." Darian stared into the darkness beneath the doorway. "It's waiting for us." Aurora followed his gaze. "No." She answered quietly. "We're walking into its history."

Caelum took the first step. His footsteps echoed down the ancient staircase. He never looked back. Not because he didn't care. Because he already knew they would follow. Aurora stepped toward the doorway. Lucien moved beside her. "If we go down..." He looked into the endless darkness. "...nothing we believed about Hollow Vale will survive." Aurora tightened her grip on the Veil. She looked at her family. At the frightened survivors. At the staircase disappearing into the mountain. Then she drew one slow breath. "We've come too far to stop now." She placed one foot on the first ancient step. The stone was cold. Older than memory. Behind her, Gideon helped the survivors form a line. Elara carried one exhausted child in her arms. Their mother counted every survivor, refusing to leave anyone behind. Darian picked up a burning torch from the ruins of the labyrinth. One by one... the last people of Hollow Vale began descending beneath the mountain.

Behind them, the labyrinth gave one final groan. The last standing stone cracked in half. Then the entire maze vanished beneath the earth. As if it had never existed at all. Only the open doorway remained. And below it... the darkness where every answer had been waiting.
