Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Bronski’s Ambition

Virginia, outside the visa checkpoint.

After a series of thrilling disguised crossings, Bruce Banner finally stood on the long-awaited soil of his homeland.

His shirt was tattered and old, his lower body clad in loose trousers, and his messy hair hidden under a baseball cap.

He had been on the run from the military's arrest warrant for four years.

If it weren't for the military's surprise raid this time, forcing him to inadvertently embark on the return journey, he probably would never have come back to this country in his lifetime.

Bruce pulled down his cap, his weathered face hidden in shadow. He carefully avoided the noisy crowd and walked down the street like a vagrant.

He walked aimlessly for a while, then startled and looked up. He realized he had subconsciously arrived next to a university's main entrance.

Culver University.

This was where Bruce's fate had taken a turn.

Four years ago, he had fallen from the peak of a life with a flourishing career and love into the boundless abyss of a criminal monster who fled after an accident.

At the university entrance, birds sang and flowers bloomed.

The fountain sparkled with golden light in the sun, young boys and girls frolicked on the lawn, and the pathways were filled with students and teachers in formal attire coming and going.

Fearing being recognized by acquaintances, Bruce hid in the shade of a tree along the pathway.

As if by an act of God, a long-haired, voluptuous female teacher just happened to walk out of the school's main entrance.

She was intimately linking arms with a man in a suit, chatting and laughing as they passed through the pathway.

That was his former girlfriend, Betty Ross, who was also General Ross's daughter.

A feeling of anger arose in Banner's heart, but it quickly dissipated.

Banner sighed. Betty was a good girl. How could he expect Betty to wait for him for four years and for a dark life with no future?

He was no longer the astonishing physics genius he once was, but Bruce Banner, a man hunted by the military and at the lowest point of his life.

At the same time, at the U.S. military's Second Base.

General Ross looked at the man who was fighting a dozen people not far away, and a smile appeared on his face.

It seemed the Super Soldier research had yielded results, but what a pity. It was somewhat costly and not as powerful as Captain America Steve Rogers.

It even carried certain dangers and had a very low success rate.

It was hard to believe how the super serum, which modern people were completely helpless against, had been developed during World War II, a time when technology was far behind modern times.

Even if it had been replicated, it either had extreme side effects or was a weakened version of the super soldier serum, simply unable to compete with the original.

"How do you feel, Bronski?" General Ross called out to the Caucasian man who was fighting a dozen people.

Emil Blonsky, as his name suggested, was Russian.

He had once belonged to the Soviet Union's KGB intelligence organization. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, he joined the British Royal Marines and was later seconded to the SEALs.

As a soldier, he was absolutely top-notch.

And ever since he started working for General Ross, he had begun to climb up from that top-tier rank. Strictly speaking, he was no longer an ordinary soldier but a Super Soldier.

"I feel great, General Ross. Also, I'm very excited. I really want to find that guy again and have a good fight with him!" Bronski replied.

From his words, one could feel how unwilling he was about his failure and how much he wanted to find the guy who had made him fail and compete with him again.

General Ross naturally heard the implication in his words. He was silent for a moment, then said seriously to Bronski, "Bronski, you should know that you are not his opponent."

"I know, General! I understand perfectly!" Bronski interrupted General Ross impatiently, his expression becoming very excited.

"But General, you should also know that I am the only one under your command who can fight that big guy. And I think I am the most qualified person to fight him, as long as…"

"As long as?" Hearing the implied meaning in Bronski's words, General Ross couldn't help but frown.

Strictly speaking, he didn't like this soldier. He was too arrogant and had a record of disobeying orders.

Although his abilities were strong, as the developer of the Super Soldier program, what he valued least was individual ability.

The purpose of the Super Soldier program was to turn all soldiers into Super Soldiers, which meant elevating all soldiers to an extraordinary level, not just a select few.

Bronski thought his superhuman level would attract General Ross's attention and that he might even be able to make some unreasonable demands.

This was actually a very wrong choice. It would only make General Ross's impression of him worse and worse.

However, he was right about one thing: he was the only soldier General Ross currently had who could fight the Hulk, and he was his only usable combat power.

For no other reason than that he was the only one in his hands who had successfully activated the super soldier serum.

Of course, this super soldier serum was not the one that created Captain America, but something General Ross had replicated over the years based on the data left behind at the time.

It was somewhat regrettable that although the item had been replicated, its effect was not obvious. Moreover, it also had certain dangers, which was what troubled General Ross the most.

Because this super soldier serum was, strictly speaking, a failed product, its success rate was too low. So far, there had only been one case, and that was Emil Blonsky.

"Tell me, what exactly do you want?" General Ross did not have a habit of guessing other people's thoughts.

Although he didn't like Bronski, he had no other choice. Because, as Bronski himself said, he was the only one who could fight the Hulk.

"I want another injection of that stuff." Hearing the compromise in General Ross's tone and feeling the boundless power within him, a hint of greed and desire appeared in Bronski's eyes. This wasn't enough. He wanted more.

"I want a larger dosage," Bronski stated his demand.

"No!" Hearing this, General Ross's face immediately turned cold.

Although he had previously admired this guy's fearless courage, admiration was one thing. He didn't like soldiers who disobeyed orders.

And this super soldier serum had only succeeded in Bronski's case so far. This was his important mission to fight the Hulk, and there could be no mistakes.

"That stuff is very dangerous. Your chances of surviving a second injection are very small! If it fails, soldier, you will surely die on the operating table!" General Ross sternly shouted.

He explained very clearly what the consequences of failure would be to Bronski, but this was not out of concern for his life.

It was out of concern that he would lose a weapon capable of fighting the Hulk. Although he had already determined that Bronski was not the Hulk's opponent.
