Chapter 48 - Spoils of the Dead

I discharged myself the next morning.

My arm was in a sling, and every breath felt like swallowing glass, but the Base Core was calling me. The Titan hadn't just been a threat; it was a resource.

We gathered at the corpse.

It was a mountain of salvageable material. The hydraulic pistons were fused, but the steel was high-grade military alloy. The bones of the zombies fused inside were dense with calcium and mutated marrow.

And the core.

It was the size of a basketball, embedded deep in the chest cavity. It pulsed with a sickly, heavy rhythm.

"Careful," I warned the salvage crew. "It might be unstable."

I reached out with my Plant Affinity. I couldn't lift it, but I could sense the energy. It was chaotic, violent.

"System, analyze."

[CORE ANALYSIS: STAGE 4 SIEGE TYPE]

[ENERGY DENSITY: EXTREME]

[CORRUPTION LEVEL: 85%]

[USABLE FOR: BASE WEAPONRY, HIGH-LEVEL CRAFTING]

[WARNING: DIRECT ABSORPTION FATAL]

"Don't touch it with your skin," I told Liang. "We're going to use it as a battery."

"For what?" Liang asked, eyeing the glowing orb warily.

I pointed to the broken wall. "We're not just fixing the wall. We're building a cannon. A siege breaker. We hook this core up to the remaining Sentinels and we turn this valley into a kill box."

I looked at the ruins of the Titan. "We melt this metal down. We plate the walls. We sharpen the bones into spikes. We use every single ounce of this monster."

Marcus stepped up, tablet in hand. "We have enough material here to arm another fifty people. And if we smelt the steel... we can reinforce the gate properly."

"Do it," I said. "Work shifts around the clock. I want this place a fortress by tomorrow night."

As I watched the crews descend on the corpse like ants on a fallen whale, I felt the SP trickling in.

[RESOURCE SALVAGE: +150 SP]

[MATERIAL ACQUISITION: +50 SP]

My total was climbing. 800 SP. Close to a breakthrough.

We had paid in blood, but we had bought ourselves time. And guns.
