Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: The Peace After The Storm

Chapter 44: The Final Move

(Jay Jay's POV)

The mansion was quiet again.

But it was the kind of quiet that comes after something big has happened.

The kind where everyone knows the storm has passed…

For now.

Yuri had been dragged back to the underground cell two hours ago.

Amy had insisted on guarding the hallway.

Sophia and Savannah were still in the study reviewing the network responses.

And Keifer was sitting beside me on the balcony outside the study.

Neither of us had spoken for a while.

The night air was cool.

Soft wind moved through the tall trees surrounding the Watson estate.

The city lights glowed far away in the distance.

Peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Keifer finally broke the silence.

Keifer:

"You're not finished yet."

It wasn't a question.

I leaned back in the chair.

Jay:

"No."

Keifer sighed quietly.

Keifer:

"I figured."

He turned toward me.

Keifer:

"What are you planning now?"

I pulled a small flash drive from my pocket.

The metal reflected the moonlight.

Keifer raised an eyebrow.

Keifer:

"That looks official."

Jay:

"It is."

He took the drive from my hand and examined it.

Keifer:

"Let me guess."

He glanced at me.

Keifer:

"Evidence."

Jay:

"Yes."

The wind moved my hair slightly as I looked out over the dark gardens.

Jay:

"The hit list."

"The messages."

"The financial transfers."

"The hired driver."

Keifer's expression grew serious.

Keifer:

"You collected all of that."

Jay:

"Savannah did."

Keifer exhaled slowly.

Keifer:

"And you're giving it to the police."

Jay:

"Yes."

For a moment he just stared at me.

Then he leaned back in his chair.

Keifer:

"You're handing him over to the law."

Jay:

"Yes."

Keifer rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

Keifer:

"That's not the revenge I expected."

Jay:

"Good."

He chuckled quietly.

Keifer:

"You're unpredictable."

I stood up slowly.

My side still pulled slightly when I moved but it was healing well.

Jay:

"Keeping him here forever would only create more problems."

Keifer watched me carefully.

Jay:

"The police will lock him away legally."

Keifer nodded slowly.

Keifer:

"And the evidence makes sure he stays there."

Jay:

"Exactly."

Keifer studied the flash drive again.

Keifer:

"You're ending it."

Jay:

"Yes."

Inside the mansion footsteps echoed.

Amy appeared in the doorway.

Amy:

"You two are being suspiciously calm."

Jay:

"Hi Amy."

Amy leaned against the doorframe.

Amy:

"What are we doing now?"

I held up the flash drive.

Amy squinted.

Amy:

"That's not a bomb."

Jay:

"No."

Amy gasped dramatically.

Amy:

"Are we going to the police?"

Savannah appeared behind her.

Savannah:

"I heard that."

Sophia followed a moment later.

Sophia:

"That would actually be the logical choice."

Amy crossed her arms.

Amy:

"Logical is boring."

Savannah shrugged.

Savannah:

"Prison is worse than boring."

Keifer stood up.

Keifer:

"When?"

Jay:

"Tonight."

Amy blinked.

Amy:

"Right now?"

Jay:

"Yes."

Twenty minutes later we were in the cars again.

Three black SUVs rolled quietly through the city streets.

But this time we weren't heading to a warehouse.

Or a safehouse.

Or a battlefield.

We were heading to the police station.

The bright lights of the building reflected across the windshield as we arrived.

It felt strange walking inside.

Almost surreal.

Amy whispered dramatically beside me.

Amy:

"This feels illegal."

Sophia sighed.

Sophia:

"It's literally the opposite."

Keifer walked beside me as we approached the front desk.

The officer looked up curiously.

Officer:

"How can I help you?"

I placed the flash drive on the desk.

Jay:

"I'd like to report an attempted murder."

Thirty minutes later we were sitting in a small office with two detectives.

Savannah connected the flash drive to the computer.

Files appeared across the screen.

Emails.

Encrypted chats.

Payment records.

The hired driver's confession.

And the hit list.

One detective leaned forward slowly.

Detective:

"This is… a lot."

Jay:

"Yes."

The other detective looked at the screen again.

Detective:

"This proves conspiracy to commit murder."

He looked at me.

Detective:

"And attempted murder."

Keifer crossed his arms quietly beside me.

Jay:

"The suspect is currently in custody."

Both detectives looked confused.

Detective:

"In custody where?"

Amy grinned proudly.

Amy:

"Watson Mansion basement."

Sophia facepalmed.

Sophia:

"Amy."

The detectives stared at us.

Clearly processing what she had just said.

Keifer spoke calmly.

Keifer:

"We restrained him after the attack."

One detective sighed heavily.

Detective:

"We'll send officers immediately."

Forty minutes later police cars surrounded the mansion gates.

Blue lights flashed across the trees.

The quiet estate suddenly felt very official.

Yuri was brought upstairs in handcuffs.

Two officers held his arms firmly.

He looked exhausted.

Defeated.

When he saw the police cars his expression changed.

Shock.

Then realization.

Yuri looked directly at me.

Yuri:

"You gave me to them."

Jay:

"Yes."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

Yuri:

"You could've killed me."

Jay:

"I didn't want to."

The officers began guiding him toward the car.

Yuri looked back one last time.

At Keifer.

At me.

Yuri:

"I guess this is goodbye."

Keifer didn't respond.

Not a word.

The police car door slammed shut.

The sirens turned on moments later.

And just like that—

Yuri was gone.

The mansion slowly returned to silence again.

Amy stretched her arms dramatically.

Amy:

"Well that was anticlimactic."

Savannah closed her laptop.

Savannah:

"No more hit lists."

Sophia nodded.

Sophia:

"No more assassination attempts."

Keifer looked at me quietly.

Keifer:

"You really ended it."

I watched the police lights disappear down the road.

Jay:

"Yes."

But deep down I knew something.

Something that lingered like a shadow at the edge of the story.

Yuri had not been the only one.

And sooner or later…

The others would reveal themselves.

But for tonight—

The war was finally quiet.

The Watson mansion had finally returned to something that resembled peace.

No alarms.

No gunshots.

No emergency calls from the Obsidian Circle or the Iron Vipers.

Just quiet.

Real quiet.

The kind that felt strange after weeks of chaos.

Jay Jay had been discharged from the hospital two days ago.

Two long days where I had turned into something between a bodyguard… and an overprotective idiot.

At least that's what Amy called me.

Amy earlier that evening:

"Keifer, if you stare at her any harder you'll burn a hole through her skull."

I ignored her.

Because every time I looked at Jay Jay…

I remembered the moment she collapsed in my arms.

Blood everywhere.

Her eyes closing.

And the terrifying thought that I might lose her.

So yes.

Maybe I was watching her a little too closely.

Right now she was curled up on the couch under a blanket.

Her hair messy.

Her eyes half-closed.

Looking peaceful.

And extremely annoyed.

Jay Jay groaned dramatically.

Jay:

"Keifer."

Me:

"Yes?"

Jay:

"I want chocolate."

I immediately shook my head.

Me:

"No."

She frowned.

Jay:

"You didn't even think about it."

Me:

"I don't need to."

She sat up slowly.

Jay:

"You are unbelievably cruel."

I crossed my arms.

Me:

"The doctor said no sugar until your stitches heal."

She pointed an accusing finger at me.

Jay:

"You enjoy this."

Me:

"I absolutely do."

She glared.

Jay:

"You're evil."

I sat beside her and gently pulled the blanket higher around her shoulders.

Me:

"You got shot."

Jay:

"I noticed."

Me:

"So no chocolate."

She sighed dramatically and leaned against me.

Her head rested on my shoulder.

Jay:

"You're the worst boyfriend ever."

I smirked.

Me:

"And yet you're still here."

She muttered something under her breath that sounded suspiciously like:

"Unfortunately."

But a moment later her fingers slipped into my shirt and held onto the fabric.

Clingy.

Very clingy.

And honestly?

I didn't mind.

Not even a little.

Eventually the house went quiet for the night.

Amy and Savannah disappeared upstairs.

Sophia retreated to the office to finish some work.

The guards outside rotated shifts.

And Jay Jay finally fell asleep.

I carried her to my bedroom.

Carefully.

Slowly.

Trying not to wake her.

She mumbled something sleepily as I placed her on the bed.

Jay:

"Keifer…"

Me:

"Yeah?"

Jay:

"Chocolate…"

I chuckled softly.

Me:

"Go to sleep."

Within minutes she was completely out.

Her breathing steady.

Her face relaxed.

I stayed awake for a while.

Watching her.

Just making sure she was okay.

Eventually exhaustion won.

And I fell asleep beside her.

Sometime later that night—

Something felt wrong.

My eyes opened slowly.

The room was dark.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

I turned my head toward the other side of the bed.

Empty.

I sat up immediately.

My heart rate jumping.

Me:

"Jay?"

No response.

The bathroom light was off.

The balcony door was closed.

The bed was empty.

I ran a hand through my hair.

Me:

"You've got to be kidding me."

I got up and walked into the hallway.

The mansion was dark.

Everyone asleep.

I checked the living room.

Nothing.

The balcony.

Nothing.

The library.

Nothing.

My brain immediately started imagining worst-case scenarios.

Which was extremely annoying.

Then I noticed something.

A faint light.

Coming from the kitchen hallway.

I followed it quietly.

And heard something.

A soft crinkling sound.

Like someone opening a wrapper.

I pushed open the pantry door.

And there she was.

Jay Jay sat cross-legged on the floor.

Surrounded by chocolate bars.

One already half eaten.

Another in her hand.

She froze.

We stared at each other.

Jay:

"…Hi."

I blinked.

Slowly.

Me:

"You're joking."

She held up the chocolate defensively.

Jay:

"I needed it."

I crossed my arms.

Me:

"The doctor said no."

She pointed at me with the chocolate bar.

Jay:

"You said no."

Me:

"Because the doctor said no."

She sighed.

Jay:

"You two are a terrible team."

I leaned against the pantry door.

Me:

"You snuck out of bed… for chocolate."

She nodded proudly.

Jay:

"Yes."

Then she added quietly.

Jay:

"I was very stealthy."

I looked at the chocolate wrappers scattered around her.

Me:

"You woke half the pantry."

She ignored that.

Jay:

"Do you want some?"

She held out a piece.

I stared at it.

Then at her.

Me:

"You're unbelievable."

She grinned.

Jay:

"Thank you."

I sighed and crouched down beside her.

Me:

"You could've reopened your stitches."

She shrugged casually.

Jay:

"Worth it."

I pinched the bridge of my nose.

Trying not to laugh.

Jay Jay leaned against me.

Still holding the chocolate bar.

Jay:

"You're very clingy lately."

I looked at her.

Me:

"You got shot."

She leaned her head against my shoulder.

Jay:

"Still clingy."

I wrapped an arm around her automatically.

Me:

"And you're sneaking around the house at two in the morning."

She took another bite of chocolate.

Completely unapologetic.

Jay:

"I regret nothing."

I sighed again.

But this time I couldn't stop smiling.

After a moment she spoke again.

Quieter.

Jay:

"You were scared… weren't you?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Then I admitted softly.

Me:

"Terrified."

She looked at me.

Really looked.

Jay:

"I'm still here."

I pulled her closer.

Carefully.

Making sure not to hurt her side.

Me:

"Yeah."

She rested her head against my chest.

Chocolate still in hand.

Jay:

"You're not taking the chocolate away, right?"

I looked down at her.

Me:

"Absolutely not."

Her eyes widened.

Jay:

"Really?"

I took the chocolate bar from her hand.

And took a bite myself.

Me:

"We're both getting yelled at by the doctor now."

Jay Jay burst out laughing.

The quiet pantry echoing with the sound.

And for the first time in weeks…

Everything finally felt normal again.
