Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 – Ashes of Protection

The battlefield had shifted entirely by the time the fox settled into its new form fully. Nine golden tails encircled Lin Tianren's unconscious body, forming a living wall around him while his breath came shallow and faint beneath it.

The remaining demons hesitated at the edge of that protective circle, uncertain how to press an advantage against something that had just watched two Half-Gold generals and thousands of their own die within the span of an hour. Then the sky split overhead, a shadow moving across the clouds — not fully descending yet, but close enough that everyone on the field felt the weight of it settle over them like the air before a storm finally breaks.

Demon Lord pressure, unmistakable even at this distance.

The Beast Queen reacted immediately.

She landed beside them, emerald aura surging outward in a wave that crushed every demon within five hundred meters flat against the scorched earth. Her voice, when she spoke, carried a strain underneath its calm that hadn't been there earlier in the night.

"We withdraw."

The fox lowered its head slightly in acknowledgment, understanding the order even without words. She placed one hand over Lin Tianren's chest, a pulse of ancient life energy moving into his shattered meridians — not healing him, only holding the fracture steady enough to keep him from slipping further.

She extended her wings, a massive emerald barrier expanding to block the abyssal projectiles still arriving from demons regrouping at the field's edge, and the small group retreated together toward the safety of Beast Territory's inner sanctuary.

Far beyond that retreat, the Demon Lord was already calculating something else entirely. Wasting further strength on a wounded sovereign beast, protected now by a fully engaged Queen, offered poor returns for the cost. He shifted his attention instead, toward something considerably softer, considerably less defended.

Toward the human frontier village sitting undefended at the valley's edge.

The first wave struck at dusk, without generals, without any real strategy behind it — just rage, redirected somewhere it could actually land. Thousands of mid-tier demons descended on a settlement guarded mostly by Bronze and low Silver cultivators, none of them prepared for anything approaching this scale.

Houses caught fire almost immediately, wooden roofs collapsing under flame that spread faster than anyone could organize a response to. Lin Tianren would learn the details only later, secondhand, from survivors too shaken to tell the story cleanly — a father who hadn't reached his daughter in time, a mother who never made it to the cellar she'd pushed her son into, an old man who'd picked up a farming blade against something that had never once considered him a threat worth pausing for.

By the time the worst of it passed, the dirt roads ran dark with more than rain, and somewhere in the wreckage a small girl knelt beside a sister who wouldn't wake no matter how many times she shook her, the burning sky reflected in eyes that hadn't yet understood what had actually happened.

The sky over the village glowed red long after the fires themselves had mostly burned through what little the settlement had left to offer.

Inside Beast Territory's protected sanctuary, none of it had reached them yet. Lin Tianren lay unconscious, the fox's nine tails still wrapped around him like a fortress built from something far more permanent than stone.

The Beast Queen stood outside the chamber, her aura flickering — not from exhaustion, though exhaustion sat heavily on her too. From damage. A distant abyssal strike had caught her during the retreat, a wound cutting across her side where black corruption had already begun spreading slow and patient beneath the skin.

She'd concealed it as best she could. The fox noticed anyway, its golden eyes tracking the faint hitch in her breathing that no one else nearby had caught yet.

A surviving human cultivator stumbled into the territory sometime before midnight, burned and half-dead, collapsing at the Queen's feet before he could finish the sentence he'd clearly run every remaining step to deliver.

"The village," he managed. "Gone. Demons. Everyone—"

He didn't finish it. He didn't need to. He was dead within moments of arriving, whatever strength had carried him this far finally spent entirely.

The fox's golden eyes narrowed at the sight of him, its tails burning brighter in response to something that had nothing to do with the battle it had just survived. Even unconscious, several meters away, Lin Tianren's fingers twitched faintly — as if some part of him had felt the weight of what had just been delivered, even without waking to hear it directly.

The Beast Queen looked toward the burning horizon for a long moment, her voice carrying something close to grief when she finally spoke.

"The Demon Lord chooses cruelty over confrontation," she said quietly. "When he can't reach what he actually wants, he reaches for what's easiest to hurt instead."

She turned to the fox. "Guard him."

Then she stepped forward, already preparing to move despite the wound still spreading beneath her robes. The corruption pulsed violently the moment she shifted her weight onto it — gold-level abyss poison, the same strike she'd absorbed shielding Lin Tianren from it earlier without either of them fully realizing the cost at the time.

Her body trembled for half a second under the flare of pain.

She didn't retreat from it. She kept walking anyway, toward whatever remained to be done tonight.

By dawn, the human village existed only as ash and silence. Bodies lined streets that had been ordinary and unremarkable only a day earlier. A few survivors wandered through the wreckage in the particular kind of shock that hadn't yet found room for grief, a child crying beside two figures who would never move again, smoke still rising steadily into a sky that had gone entirely quiet overnight.

No warriors remained among the ruins. Only loss, spread out across ground that hadn't asked for any part of the war that had found it anyway.

Inside the sanctuary, Lin Tianren remained unconscious through all of it. But somewhere beneath the surface, inside a core still fractured in a dozen places, something was shifting regardless.

Not rage exactly. Not hatred either, not yet. Something closer to resolve, forming quietly around a memory of cries he hadn't personally heard, but would carry with him the moment he finally woke to learn what they'd cost.

The fox lay beside him through the rest of the night, nine tails burning low and steady. At the edge of the forest, the Beast Queen stood watching the distant smoke fade slowly into morning light, her emerald aura dimmer than it had been the night before.

Heavenly-tier, and injured. But still standing, still watching, still unwilling to look away from what had just happened on her account.

The war had stopped being an abstraction sometime overnight. It had a body count now that had nothing to do with generals or bloodlines, and somewhere beneath his shattered meridians, Lin Tianren was already beginning to understand exactly what he'd wake up owing.
