Chapter 10 - Chapter 10– Heart of Ironwood

Morning light struggled to reach the forest floor through Ironwood Grove's dense canopy, filtered down into thin gray shafts that did little to warm the air. Lin Tianren stood before the grove's oldest tree — a trunk dark as forged steel, threaded through with faint metallic veins that pulsed almost imperceptibly, as if something ancient still moved slowly beneath the bark.

The system's interface shimmered at the edge of his vision, quieter than it had been the night before.

Mu Yuhan studied the ancient trunk with the careful attention of someone who'd read about this specific danger before ever expecting to face it. "Heart Essence only forms in trees older than a century. And never without guardians."

"Never," Bai Xinyue confirmed.

As if the word itself had summoned them, the ground trembled. Three Ironback Fang Boars emerged from different points around the clearing — larger than the one from yesterday, hide thicker, movements coordinated in a way that felt less like animal instinct and more like drilled formation.

"No retreat option, I take it," he said.

"If you retreat from three," Bai Xinyue said evenly, "you'll retreat from ten, the next time something bigger decides you're worth testing. Better to learn the lesson now, on our terms."

Mu Yuhan's gaze lingered on him, weighing something. "We interfere only if your survival probability drops below acceptable."

Controlled danger, then. A test, dressed up as necessity — though given the two countdowns sitting behind his thoughts, he suspected the line between the two had mostly stopped mattering.

The boars charged together, spacing themselves with a discipline that made his stomach tighten. He dodged the first, rolled beneath the second, and the third adjusted mid-path to catch his shoulder squarely, throwing him back across the ironwood roots hard enough to steal his breath.

[Bone Density +2%][Body Tempering Progress: 23%]

He forced himself upright immediately, pain sharpening his focus rather than dulling it. Three at once. Hesitation would cost him more than any single strike could.

He stopped trying to fight all three and started repositioning instead, drawing one boar toward a narrow gap between two ironwood trunks — restricted space, just wide enough to break their coordinated charge pattern into something he could handle one piece at a time.

The first boar lunged into the gap and he pivoted at the last possible instant, letting it smash headfirst into bark reinforced by centuries of dense, metallic Qi. Stunned, momentarily vulnerable, he drove a compressed pulse of flame directly into its skull.

It collapsed. Two remained.

The others adjusted their formation immediately, no longer reckless, circling from opposite angles with the patience of something that had learned from watching the first one die.

"He's thinking," Bai Xinyue murmured, watching without moving to help.

He breathed once, circulating frost through his left meridians and flame through the right, the harmonized pattern he'd built two nights ago holding steady despite the pressure. When the second boar lunged, he stepped into the charge instead of away from it, letting his forearm redirect the tusk's path at the cost of bone-deep vibration up his arm — but the shift exposed the joint beneath its jaw, and he drove a concentrated pulse through it before it could recover.

It staggered. A second strike finished what the first had started.

One remained.

It didn't charge. It howled instead, a deep resonance that rolled through the grove and split the earth faintly at the base of the ancient tree.

Something larger rose from the disturbed ground — scarred, heavier, its aura dense enough to visibly distort the air around it.

An Alpha Ironback. Mid-to-High Silver Rank.

Mu Yuhan's voice dropped low. "This is territory defense."

"And judgment," Bai Xinyue added, golden eyes sharp.

The Alpha ignored both women entirely, its full attention locked onto Lin Tianren with the unmistakable weight of a challenge recognized and accepted.

[Warning: Opponent Above Current Combat Tier][Estimated Victory Probability: 31%]

The pressure alone made his muscles feel sluggish, his own aura shrinking against something considerably larger. One clean strike, and he wouldn't be standing to attempt a second.

I need the Essence. Not pride. Not the ordinary ego of a man who'd rather die than retreat. Without core formation, twelve days meant nothing — he'd meet whatever the sect was preparing at a fraction of the strength he'd need to survive it.

He steadied his breathing and let the Alpha come to him.

It charged faster than the others had, and the impact detonated through his braced arms hard enough to splinter the tree behind him. Blood filled his mouth. He didn't disengage — he absorbed what he could, redirected the rest, reduced the shock traveling through his frame with every fraction of technique he had left.

Another charge. Another block. Each collision hammered bone and muscle in equal measure.

[Body Tempering: 27% → 31%][Pain Resistance Increasing]

The Alpha grew more aggressive with every failed attempt to end him quickly, its attacks losing the tactical patience the first boar had shown and replacing it with raw, dominant force. Aggression widened openings the way patience never did.

On its next charge, he didn't block. He sidestepped close instead, leapt, and landed on its armored back, hooking one arm around a tusk as the beast bucked violently beneath him. Flame surged into bone, frost following immediately after, rapid alternating pulses designed to disrupt rather than simply damage.

The Alpha roared, movement destabilizing under the internal assault. He concentrated everything he had left — not explosive, compressed, targeted precisely through the damaged eye ridge his earlier fight had already weakened.

A final pulse. The energy drove through skull cavity, and the massive body collapsed beneath him.

The grove fell completely silent.

For several breaths, nothing moved. Then the ancient Ironwood tree vibrated faintly, bark splitting slowly along one side to reveal a crystalline core embedded deep in dense fiber, glowing soft gold in the low light.

[Ironwood Heart Essence Acquired]

Lin Tianren nearly went down entirely, exhaustion finally catching up with everything he'd just spent. Mu Yuhan caught his shoulder before he could.

"You're leaking blood," she muttered.

"Better than leaking regret," he managed, and something close to a smile flickered across her face before she smoothed it away.

Bai Xinyue approached the fallen Alpha, studying it with something like respect. "You chose endurance over dominance."

"I'm not strong enough to overpower anything here yet," he said. "So I outlast instead."

Her gaze held his a moment longer than the observation strictly required. "That is precisely why you're still alive."

High above the grove, a black-feathered bird perched motionless on a dead branch, its pupils glowing faint red beneath the canopy shadow. Through its vision, the masked figure watched the entire exchange unfold — the Alpha's collapse, the golden light of the Essence emerging from ancient bark.

"So he endured an Alpha," the figure said, low amusement threading through the words. "Good. Let him form his Core."

The sigil behind the mask flickered once, catching what little light reached this deep into the forest. "Growth makes collapse exquisite," the figure murmured, echoing the same words spoken over the mirror the night before. "And once his Core stabilizes, he'll finally be worth the effort of breaking properly."

The bird took flight, carrying the report north, toward wherever the Black Core preparations were already underway.

Night fell over the quiet grove, and no one spoke lightly. The Ironwood Heart Essence floated between the three of them, radiating a dense, heavy vitality that made the surrounding air feel thick.

Mu Yuhan stabilized his internal circulation pathways with careful, practiced precision. Bai Xinyue controlled the beast aura resonance threatening to spike into backlash. Lin Tianren absorbed the Essence slowly, layer by layer — bone first, then muscle, then the walls of channels still healing from everything he'd forced them through in the last day alone.

The Essence burned through his meridians like molten metal, not destructive exactly, but heavy, reinforcing in a way that hurt precisely because it was building something meant to last. Pain remained constant throughout, but structured now, the way everything about his growth in this world had started to feel — earned, costly, and durable in equal measure.

Hours passed in that slow, deliberate burn. The system updated quietly as the process finally settled.

[Spirit Core Progress: 38%][Vessel Reinforcement: Significant][Meridian Expansion Stability: Improved][Time Remaining — Primary Clock: 21 Days | Territory Expansion: 10 Days]

He exhaled slowly, the exhaustion of the last two days finally settling into something like rest. Not a breakthrough. A foundation secured — the difference between a structure that could hold weight and one that would simply collapse the first time real pressure tested it.

Above the quiet forest, something darker was still moving, patient and methodical, counting down the same ten days he was.

But for the first time since he'd woken up on cold marble with a rod coming down toward his leg, Lin Tianren thought he might actually survive meeting it.
