Chapter 7 - Giovanni’s Decision

Giovanni sat in the dimly lit office of the DeLuca family estate, his mind raced, torn between two worlds, two families, and one life that hung in the balance.

The phone call had been a storm he hadn't expected. It wasn't just the fact that Sophia Vincente had been taken. It wasn't even the sharp pain that gripped him as he thought about her, lying in that sterile hospital room, fighting a losing battle. It was the realization that he was the only one who could save her and in saving her, he was about to shatter everything he'd ever known.

Giovanni stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. He walked to the window, staring out over the sprawling city below, the heart of the empire his family had built. He had always lived by one simple rule: the DeLuca name came first. Family. Legacy. Power. Those were the tenets that had defined him. And now, he was about to give it all up.

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Giovanni turned, his jaw clenched tight, but he knew who it was without even asking.

Marco stepped inside, his expression as unreadable as ever, but Giovanni could sense the tension between them. It was thicker now, heavier, like a veil that separated them even more than their different beliefs had done before.

"I just spoke to Father," Marco said, his voice flat, but Giovanni could hear the sharp edge of concern beneath his words. "You're not seriously considering this, are you?"

Giovanni's eyes met his brother's, the weight of the moment settling like a thick fog in the room. "I'm not asking for your approval, Marco. I'm doing what needs to be done."

Marco stepped forward, his frustration building. "What needs to be done? Giovanni, we don't help the Vincentes. We never have. We don't get involved with them, and we don't risk everything for someone who isn't even one of us."

Giovanni's eyes flickered with something darker. "You don't understand. She's dying, Marco. She's not just some enemy. She's the woman I—"

"Don't!" Marco interrupted, his voice raising in anger. "Don't tell me this is about some woman. This is bigger than that! This is about our family. About everything we've worked for. You can't just throw it away because of some sick girl."

The words stung more than Giovanni was willing to admit, but he fought to keep his composure. His heart was pounding in his chest, every beat a painful reminder of what he was about to do. "I'm not throwing anything away. I'm saving her. Saving us. Don Vincente would never let her die if he knew there was a chance. And neither can I."

Marco shook his head, disbelief in his eyes. "Giovanni, you're talking about crossing lines we can never uncross. The Vincentes are our enemies, and you're about to offer them your life? For what? A woman who has never been on our side?"

Giovanni's fists clenched at his sides, his jaw tight. "You don't get it. I've spent my whole life doing what Father wanted. Doing what's expected of me. But I can't keep doing this. I can't stand by and watch her die, knowing I could save her."

Marco's eyes darkened, the silence between them stretching out like a chasm. "And when Father finds out—"

"I'll deal with that when the time comes," Giovanni cut him off, his voice steady, though it shook with emotion. "I won't let this go. I won't stand idly by while she suffers."

Marco took a step back, his expression cold, as though the words had driven a wedge between them that couldn't be undone. "You're making a huge mistake, Giovanni. I hope you're prepared for the consequences."

The tension in the room was unbearable, a thick, suffocating cloud of fear, regret, and defiance. Giovanni could feel the weight of Marco's gaze on him as he turned away, but there was no turning back. He had made his decision.

The next few hours were a blur of frantic action. Giovanni made arrangements through back channels, ensuring that no one in his family would know about the test. His mind raced with the implications, the consequences of his choices spinning out of control, but he couldn't bring himself to care.

He was doing this for Sophia. For her life. For the future that could have been, if only they had been born into different families.

The test results came back faster than he expected. A match. Giovanni stared at the screen in disbelief, his heart hammering in his chest. His mind told him this was it—the moment where everything changed. The moment where he crossed a line from which there would be no return.

But as the weight of his decision settled on him, so did the realization that he had just signed the death warrant for everything he had ever known. The DeLuca legacy, the family that had raised him, would never forgive him for this. And once the Vincente family knew what he had done, they would never trust him.

Giovanni picked up the phone, dialing the number he knew by heart, the number he had sworn he would never call unless he was desperate.

The phone rang twice before it was answered.

"Giovanni," came the voice on the other end, cold and familiar. "What is it?"

"I need you to do something for me," Giovanni said, his voice tight. "Something that could change everything."

"I'm listening," the voice replied, a note of suspicion creeping into their tone.

"I'm a match," Giovanni said, his voice low, barely above a whisper. "For Sophia Vincente. I need you to help me make this happen."

There was a long pause on the other end, a silence that felt like an eternity. Giovanni's pulse quickened, and the weight of what he had just committed to seemed to press down on him from all sides.

Finally, the voice spoke again, its tone dark and uncertain. "You've really crossed a line this time, Giovanni. There's no turning back now."

Giovanni's heart sank as the finality of his words settled in. "I know. But I don't care anymore. I have to do this. For her."

The line went dead, leaving Giovanni alone with the enormity of his decision. The world had just shifted beneath him, and the consequences of his actions were already spiraling out of control. He had made a choice, and now, there was no escaping it.

As he stood in the silence of his office, the truth of his situation hit him harder than any blow. He had given his heart to a woman who belonged to his enemies, and in doing so, he had risked everything.

There was no way out now. There was only the fallout to come.
