Dante leaned back in the seat. His father had a way of putting him in impossible positions, missions that tested not just his loyalty but his judgment. His ability to navigate the dangerous spaces between families, between organizations, between survival and extinction.
The question was whether Dante wanted to play that game anymore.
"When does he expect me at the facility?" Dante asked.
"Week after next," Luca said. "He's giving you time to prepare, to understand their operation, to make an informed assessment."
"And what if my assessment is that The Covenant is too dangerous?" Dante asked.
"Then you report that," Luca said. "And your father makes a decision based on your intelligence."
But they both knew that wasn't entirely true. His father would make a decision based on what served his interests. Dante's assessment would matter only insofar as it aligned with his father's strategic vision.
It was the way things had always worked in their world.
