Chapter 7 - Chapter 6: The Sanctuary

High above, far beyond the dome of The Aegis, memories were the only things time could not entirely erase.

For the man now known as The Huntsman, those fragments of the past always surfaced in a blinding white glare.

He remembered the cold bite of the sonic fluid obliterating his original eye lenses, followed by a stiff, robotic voice reciting the consent terms for the Project X Protocol.

All of this happened not because he chose to be a predator, but because circumstances had forced him into it; driven by a twisted pursuit of perfection, rendering him a newly "manufactured" being, reborn.

When the microscopic electrodes began fusing with his optic nerves, the agony was so excruciating that his identity; his name, his family, his pride; burned away entirely. In its place, only memories of numerical code sequences and a broken Ouroboros symbol remained.

Behind that porcelain mask lay a startling truth: he was no longer a creature that could be called human. He was an extension of the Elite Spire's will, forced into an immortal state of frozen loyalty and servitude.

Elsewhere, Louise woke with a violent jolt. Her purple-tinted vision had faded, yet the remnants of the hallucination still left a bitter taste in her mind.

She was now in Sanctuary, the beating heart of The Rooted faction. This place was the absolute antithesis of Nova Lux's sterile, silver aesthetics.

Here, there were no curved glass walls or artificial nebulas. Sanctuary was built within colossal cavities; the hollowed-out husks of dead, ancient air-processing machines.

The walls were formed from stacks of roughly welded steel plates, with copper cables dangling like the roots of a giant tree, desperately seeking life in the darkness.

The air did not smell of ozone; instead, it reeked of grease, rust, and human sweat; the scent of an honest and harsh existence.

Meanwhile, the only illumination came from dim incandescent bulbs powered by small steam generators, casting long, dancing shadows across the vibrating iron floor.

Louise tried to move but realized her hands were loosely bound to an iron chair. Before her, three members of The Rooted stood cloaked in the shadows.

"Wake up, friend," the voice of the woman who had saved her earlier now sounded much sharper without a gas mask.

Her name was Elena. She stood with her arms folded across her stomach, gazing at Louise with eyes devoid of premium LQA; just the tired eyes of an ordinary human.

"The sample is in isolation," Elena continued.

"But there is something more pressing. Our sensors picked up an unnatural frequency distortion when you faced The Huntsman. You saw something, didn't you? Something that made you stop running for a moment."

A man with a mechanical arm; the one who had injected Louise earlier; stepped forward into the light. "Don't lie. We know The Huntsman is more than just an executioner."

"Be honest. What did you really find behind that porcelain mask?"

Louise swallowed hard, her throat feeling parched. "His eyes looked strange..." she whispered hoarsely. "And on a part of that porcelain mask... I saw a mark. A mark shaped like a broken Ouroboros symbol, identical to the one carved into the dead university student."

"I also saw a mysterious numerical code engraved directly on his sclera."

Following this intense exchange, the room suddenly fell dead silent, interrupted only by the distant hiss of steam from the pipes.

Elena and her companions exchanged looks with expressions that were hard to read; a mixture of anger and fear, accompanied by a profound, creeping dread.

"Damn it," the man with the mechanical arm cursed. "So the rumors are true. They aren't just harvesting that mysterious fluid for the needs of the Eternal Humans up there. They are also taking the 'leftovers'... taking those empty bodies and reassembling them into their hunter units. Tch, how devious."

Elena approached Louise, stopping just inches from her face. "Louise, The Huntsman chasing you... he might be a Project X subject, an experiment born from those 'empty bodies'."

"These Elite Spire factions, they are utterly ruthless, devoid of even a shred of conscience. They only know how to exploit these 'Project X' subjects, recycling them into monstrosities. It completely defies the natural laws of life and death."

Louise felt a fresh wave of terror creeping into her soul. "That means..."

"It means," Elena interrupted, her voice heavy, "your enemy is a corpse forced to move by ACVA technology. And the purple sample you brought... it's the fuel, or perhaps the essential key, to awakening those monsters. Now tell us, where did you find the coordinates for that laboratory? And who leaked them to you?"

Louise stared into Elena's eyes, trying to figure out if she could fully trust this group amidst a conspiracy that now involved the resurrection of such terrifying creatures.

To be continued...

Author's Note & Glossary

Scientific Terms and Glossary

1. Sclera: The tough, fibrous white outer layer of the eye that covers about 80% of the eyeball's surface, from the cornea to the optic nerve. It serves as the primary protection for the eye's internal structures against injury or impact, maintains the shape of the eyeball, and provides attachment points for the muscles that move the eye.

- Structure: Made of strong, intersecting collagen fibers.

- Function: Protects sensitive parts of the eye, maintains its shape, and supports eye movement.

- Color: Generally white, but can turn yellow (indicating liver disease) or bluish (due to certain medical conditions).

- Location: Situated beneath the conjunctiva and surrounds the cornea.

2. Quantum Adaptive Lens (LQA): An advanced artificial lens technology implanted into the eye to enhance visual function, protect against light radiation, and allow users to see a broader spectrum of colors on the planet's surface, among several other advantages.

3. The Aegis: A colossal protective dome.
