Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: A Surprise on the Trip

After this dream sequence, we see our protagonists in the cave: the dog waking up abruptly, whimpering slightly. Dante senses this and quickly stands up, drawing his sword and taking a few steps back, but the dog speaks.

REX: Wait, wait, it was just a bad dream, and guess what? I remembered my name. I'll introduce myself again: my name is REX. (Wagging his tail)

DANTE HERALDI: REX? Well, that's a pretty normal name. Sounds like you had a rough time in that dream. Okay, we should get going; it's time to leave.

REX: Alright, we should move on; these plains aren't exactly pleasant.

The two companions leave the area, extinguishing the flame with dirt. As they head towards the exit, Dante plays with the demon's bag for a while, managing to pull out some old pants to put on, along with boots and a polo shirt. Almost at the exit, he manages to take out a hooded blanket to cover his face, as they could be recognized outside. Then the dog speaks.

REX: Well, look, you managed to get all that out, good. Since you're fairly tall, I don't think the lesser demons will bother us.

DANTE HERALDI: What lesser demons?

REX: You see, out here there aren't just those demons who torture, well, they're known as mid-level demons, and the lesser demons are the ones who roam all over Hell; they're like animals hunting to one day become mid-level demons. Now that you've got that bag under control, we'll have a way to hunt them and feed ourselves.

DANTE HERALDI: Feed ourselves? Well, I don't think we need to eat, do we?

REX: Oh, of course we do, we need to at least once a month.

DANTE HERALDI: (sighs) If I'm already dead, why eat? Well.

Dante had already managed to seize at least part of the satchel; our friends were already walking toward the river they had mentioned. Leaving the cave, their adventures into the unknown began. Meanwhile, we return to the site of the previous battle: a huge shadow begins to descend from the sky toward the lifeless body of the demon defeated by Dante, and a sinister voice is heard.

DEMON: What happened here? That wretch, that's why he hadn't returned, ended up dead. What damned demon could have done this? And me, with things to do, I see he's heartless. Hmm, I'll have to find out after I complete my assigned mission; then I'll return to the city and report this to my king.

The demon immediately takes flight and disappears into the distance with a chilling roar, while our protagonists hear that immense noise in the distance and get goosebumps.

DANTE HERALDI: How is that possible? They found him so fast.

REX: I think so, we have to keep moving forward. I want to show you something; you'll see it later, there's something you have to see.

DANTE HERALDI: Okay, dog, just don't betray me, or you'll pay dearly.

REX: Again, I already told you I have no intention of doing that; besides, I like you. If I wanted to, I would have eaten you a long time ago, so stop being so distrustful.

DANTE HERALDI: Don't push your luck, dog.

REX: Okay, let's leave it at that (wagging his tail).

The couple continues walking through the vast, seemingly endless desert landscape of Hell. Days pass, and they are seen hunting and resting during what is supposedly Hell's night, fighting strange creatures resembling a chupacabra, other monsters like large bears, enormous scorpions, and encountering ridiculous things along the way, such as Dante falling in animal feces after leaning on it, thinking it was a rock; Dante scolding the dog for not warning him about what it was; trying to set traps on the ground to hunt, and Rex falling into them, distracted because he had wood in his mouth, and things like that. Now two months have passed.

REX: Look, once you're past that big mound, you'll be able to see it, what I was telling you about.

DANTE HERALDI: I hope it's good, since we've walked quite a way; I hope it's worth it (climbing the mound) after everything we've been through. I hope it's worth it… (whispering) Worth it.

DANTE is stunned; before him, in the distance, was an immense walled city that covered most of the area he could see, a city like something out of a knight's tale.

REX: Hehehe, welcome to the city of TLALTICPAC (narrow path), the city of demons.

DANTE HERALDI: What the hell is going on here? Explain yourself, REX.

REX: Look, we're in the city of demons; they come here to rest from the torture they inflict on us. It's a little hard to explain; I think they have a base called a guild, where they accept missions. For them, it depends on their strength, I think. We'd have to go in and see, but how do we get in?

DANTE HERALDI: Well, it'll be easy. (smiling and looking at the bag)

Dante, concentrating, puts his hand in his bag and takes out some realistic, but fake, horns, and places them on his head, covering himself with the hood of his cloak. Looking at the dog, he manages to produce what appear to be wings and attaches them to the dog's back. He then takes out a hood for the dog, and they are ready to head straight for the city. As they travel along the path, they notice a line at the entrance gate. Desperate, he tears a piece of his cloak and uses it as a mask, doing the same for the dog. Having finally reached the end of the line, they arrive at the entrance where a demon guard questions them.

DEMON GUARDIAN: Name? (looking at his tablet)

DANTE HERALDI: Um, Paimon?

DEMON GUARDIAN: (looks up) I haven't seen you around here before. Where are you from? And that animal? Um, kind of weird.

DANTE HERALDI: You see, we come from somewhere else. I was told we'd find more work here to get stronger, and this thing is a little devil. I have it as a pet, hehe (sweating profusely).

DEMON GUARDIAN: Um, (smiles) well, we need a few extra hands here, so welcome, brother. I hope you reach the right level to torture properly, hahahahaha.

DANTE HERALDI: Yeah, hahaha, yeah, hehe.

As they continue through the city, our friends see a culture like that of ancient times, demon blacksmiths, artisans selling rare fruits, meat from rare animals, and they see that they trade in strange stones and coins; then they begin to talk.

DANTE HERALDI: Hey, Rex, I see they have a currency too. What are those?

REX: Look, they're mineral coins called "reit." There are three types: copper, silver, and gold. 100 copper are worth one silver, and 100 silver are worth one gold. It's weird, but demons use this system to prosper; I think their king implemented it.

DANTE HERALDI: But we don't have any of that. How will we survive these days before we leave?

REX: Haha, don't worry, look, the demon you defeated had a gold one. (Rex proceeds to vomit a gold coin.)

DANTE HERALDI: That's disgusting. When did you do that? (Waaa) It made me want to throw up, but oh well. (He picks it up and wipes it on Rex's hair.)

REX: Hey, don't do that.

DANTE HERALDI: Okay, calm down, let's look for that base you mentioned, the guild, I think, right?

REX: Yes, right, let's see, we have to walk around the city, maybe we'll find it.

Walking through the city, they asked the various demons they encountered along the way, "Where is the guild?" They managed to get directions. Almost at the guild's location, near the city center, they noticed a huge, gloomy castle standing in the middle of the city. Realizing the guild was just a few meters away, they quickly entered. Inside, they saw some very intimidating demons and stared at them as they approached the counter where a female demon was sitting. They began to speak to her.

DEMON HOSTESS: Hello, strangers, how can I help you?

DANTE HERALDI: Um, well, you see, I'd like to register so I can work in these territories; could you explain how it works?

DEMONIC HOSTESS: Of course, look, all newcomers will start at the lowest level, which is G rank, and from there they'll climb based on their achievements. There are nine ranks: G, F, E, D, C, B, A, S, and S+. The higher ranks are for high-ranking demons, or if you challenge another demon of a higher rank, you can take their rank—if you defeat them, of course. That's how things work here in this hell. The missions are on that board, and if you want to be a torturer, those missions start at C rank, so good luck. You'll be paid according to your mission; you'll be paid in magic stones or coins. In this city, we use the stones from the monsters around here as energy and coins as currency to buy things. I don't know where you're from, but that's how things are here to avoid misunderstandings with other demons. Our emperor and the primordial demons set it up this way.

DANTE HERALDI: Thank you for all the information, so I'd like to register.

DEMON HOSTESS: Well, write your information here (hands him a sheet of paper) and I'll register you.

DANTE HERALDI: Thanks, hehe (goes to a table where REX is sitting). Now, REX, what am I going to do? I can't understand this writing at all.

REX: Don't worry, I had time to decipher her writing; it's a strange, ancient script. Let me see the paper.

DANTE HERALDI: Yes, here you go (hands him the paper).

REX starts writing with his paws, grabbing a quill pen and ink that was on the table; after a while, he gives it to DANTE.

REX: Here, give this to the girl (hands him the paper).

Dante hands the paper to the girl; after a while, he gives her a small tablet, like an ID.

DEMON HOSTESS: Well, there's your ID, Mr. Paimon, and I wish you luck on your missions. Here's the mission board. Good luck.

DANTE HERALDI: Ah, yes, yes, thank you for everything. (in his mind) It's rare to see a demon smiling and being so kind.

The two proceed to take a mission with the help of the dog, of course. They leave the guild to kill some giant wolf-like monsters south of the city, and as they head towards the city limits, they begin to talk.

DANTE HERALDI: Hey, Rex, this is weird. Why is it that I understand them perfectly when they speak to me, but I can't decipher their writing? I think I've seen it before; I think it looks a bit like ancient writing, what was it called again? Like cuneiform, I think. Anyway, I wonder why?

REX: The other demon was speaking to you in your language to torment you, but it seems that by killing the demon and eating its heart, umm, I think you acquired certain abilities. Interesting, I thought it would only give you power; I learned their writing over time by sneaking across the rooftops and watching how they wrote and spoke.

DANTE HERALDI: Well, whatever, let's go after those monsters. We'll get some of those energy-generating stones to make us stronger and get out of here, and maybe even earn some money. It gives me the creeps to be here; the demons here seem really strong.

REX: The king of this city is a demon stronger than all the others, even stronger than the one you defeated. The king's name is also Mammon, but compared to that other one you defeated, this king is a monster. I only saw him once, and believe me, he's imposing.

DANTE HERALDI: So the demons copy each other's names, but there's actually one stronger than the others. Interesting. Well, Rex, let's go after those wolves.

REX: Yeah, let's go. (Woof!)

Our friends head into the wolves' territory. How will this adventure end?
