At 10:22 AM I decided to approach her. I observed further aspects of her appearance: she was marginally shorter than I, compact and powerfully built, possessing coiled strength. Her large, luminous, amber-gold eyes featured vertical slit pupils. Soft, tawny down adorned her skin, being darkest along the spine and gradually lightening to a cream hue on her face and throat. Pointed ears, adorned with dark tufts, twitched. She had a sharp, black bob haircut. Her sleeves were rolled up, revealing corded forearms subtly dusted with tawny fur. Her nails were somewhat thick and pointed. A sleek, mobile tail, tipped with black, flicked slowly. She smelt faintly of ozone, sun-warmed stone, and musk. She had a warm, low contralto voice and, all things considered, was extremely beautiful. Whether she realised that was unknown, however.
She finished a conversation by arranging to meet at an elemental fusion lecture, then turned towards men, "Kiera," she introduced herself, offering a pal,-side casual greeting that showed empty claws, "You must be Hyõ-Nadere. I must say you are quite the observant character."
I then responded with a half-curtsey, kissing her hand in a gentlemanly greeting, "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance miss Kiera. You are quite the interesting character yourself. Much more so than the rest of the people here."
Kiera's amber eyes sparked with amused delight as I executed the gentlemanly greeting. Her hand remaining steady in mine, the light-tawny fur on her knuckles soft against my lips. She didn't pull away immediately, allowing the gesture to land before smoothly retracting her hand with the same fluid grace.
"Formal. I like it," she said, a low, purring hum of approval in her voice. Her tail gave a single, slow swish behind her. "Most of the nobility here either pretend they don't see the fur or ask if they can pet it. You skip right to the classics."
She tilted her head, the dark tufts on her pointed ears catching the light. She tilted her head, the dark tufts on her pointed ears catching the light.
"Methods differ, sure. You're mapping the terrain. I'm seeding it. But both are valid opening strategies." Her gaze flickered briefly towards the countdown board -01:30:05- before returning to me. "The interesting part is what we build once the map is drawn. Alliances get decided fast around here. Sometimes before the first class bell."
She leaned back slightly, appraising me. "So, Heir to the Nadere family. Are you just scouting interesting fauna, or are you looking to make a move before the postings drop?" Her tone was light, but the question was direct and layered. She was offering me a place in her game, but she wanted to know what kind of player I intended to be.
"There is one more difference," I stated an answer to her previous observation, "You approach a multitude. Exchanging information is a currency to you. I approach only those that I find profoundly interesting or profoundly detestable. You fall under the first category. Which is why I propose an alliance under the umbrella of friendship. I might be a creature raised in formality but I am one of profound curiosity. I am sure you can see the advantages you would gain from it.. As for why I didn't attempt to touch your ears, fur, and undeniably adorable tail.. Other than it being an act of profound disrespect unbefitting of a noble or any of the upper class, that invades your personal space. I can also imagine the frustration. I am sure if they could see the scales on my arms or chest the brave and the profoundly stupid would surely attempt to touch it, and it would peeve me off."
Kiera listened as I ranted on, her expression shifting from amused to thoughtfully engaged. The tip of her tail flicked once, twice, in a slow, measured rhythm as I spoke. When I mentioned the scales, her eyes dropped momentarily to where the white dragon-like patches were ever so slightly visible at my colour and wrists, giving a slight, understanding nod.
"A creature of profound curiosity," she repeated, tasting the phrase. "I can work with that. And you're right about the… petting." A flash of something sharp -annoyance, memory- crossed her face before it smoothed back into her easy smile. "It gets old faster than yesterday's synth-bread. So, thank you for that."
She folded her arms, the motion causing the fur on her forearms to ripple. "An alliance under the umbrella of friendship. Cuts through the transactional grease, doesn't it? Makes it more… durable." She was clearly turning the concept over, examining it from all angles. "The advantages are mutual. You have the name, the legacy, the obvious power. I have the network, the ears in a dozen conversations you're not in, and a decent sense of who's solid and who's about to crack under the pressure."
She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping just a notch. "But friendship means curiosity goes both ways, Hyõ-Nadere. I'll want to know what makes you tick, not just your family's dragon. And I'll want to see what you do when the formality fails and it's just instinct in the dark."
She straightens up, her business-like demeanour returning, but her eyes remained warm. "Consider the alliance proposed… and accepted. First order of joint observation: the postings." She gestured with her chin toward the gathering crowd at the board. "Care to watch the chaos erupt together? We can place bets on who gets paired with the Nervous Prodigy and short-circuits their entire suite on day one."
She was offering a partnership, but she was also setting terms - it was to be a two-way street. Meanwhile the countdown continued its inexorable march: 01:26:41.
"Sounds like fun. My bet is on the tough looking kid over at the next pillar, and that he'll be chased around the hallways by end of day, yours?" I asked.
Kiera followed my gaze to the "tough looking kid" - a broad-shouldered initiate with stony knuckles who's been glaring at the board as if he could intimidate it into showing results. A low, soft chuckle escaped her, a sound not unlike a contented purr.
"The Unmoving Sentinel from the courtyard? Good choice. He does have 'patient long-suffering' written all over him." She tapped a pointed nail against her chin, her eyes scanning the crowd. "I'll take the opposite bet. I think our silver-patterned Nervous Prodigy gets paired with someone unexpectantly gentle- maybe that girl who makes the floating crystal gardens in the library nook. She'll try to soothe him, he'll have an anxiety-powered surge, and they'll both be chasing glowing crystal shards down the hall by dinner."
She grinned, clearly enjoying the game. "Loser buys the first round of decent synth-caff from the upper commons vendor. Not the swill they serve here."
Together, we found a good vantage point near the base of the stairs to the balcony, slightly elevated from the main crowd. The energy in the Commons had shifted palpably in the previous few minutes. The low hum had become a buzz. The Islands of Anxiety had drifted closer together, forming a ragged shoreline of nervous energy facing the board. The Early Flocks had tightened their ranks. The Political Operator had descended from her balcony perch and now stood at the front of the crowd, data-slate ready, her expression unreadable.
We could see Salmon the lupine observer melting out of his perch and leaning against a wall near an exit, his amber eyes watching the crowd's gathering tension with detached interest. The Draconic Scholar had packed up his notes and joined the throng, looking more anxious about potentially losing study time than about his roommate.
The countdown digits blazed:
00:15:00. A hush fell, broken only by the rustle of robes and the occasional nervous cough.
Kiera leaned closer, her voice a murmur only for me. "Here we go. The academy's first real test. Not of power, but of patience… and compatibility." Her tail was perfectly still now, a sign of her own focused attention.
The final minute stretched. The staff member with the data-pad stepped forward. At 00:00:05, th crowd seemed to hold its breath.
00:00:01.
The blank metallic board shimmered, then exploded into a grid of glowing text.
ACADEMY INITIATE - DORMITORY ASSIGNMENTS headered the display. Column after column of names and suite numbers began to scroll into place.
A wave of sound - gasps, groans, cheers, and frantic searching- erupted from the assembled students.
My name was there.
NADERE, HYÕ listed alongside SUITE 7A, WEST WING BARRACKS.
Directly beneath my name was my assigned suite-mate.
SUITEMATE: ARIS, THALION.
I didn't recognise the name immediately. Before I could process it, Kiera let out a soft, sharp breath next to me. "Well," she said, her eyes fixed on the board. "That's interesting."
She pointed. Her name, KIERA, was listed a few lines down. Her suite was 7B. And her suitemate was COVENTINA - the terrifyingly powerful, silver-haired psionic prodigy from the gymnasia.
She looked from the board to me, her amber eyes wide with a mix of shock and dawning calculation. "Looks like we're neighbours, Hyõ. And I've just been paired with a psychic vortex. This should be… educational."
