Chapter 29 - : Journey [4]

The long drive finally came to an end as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep oranges and purples. Kairos slowed the car to a stop near the coordinates the system had provided — a secluded stretch of rocky coastline overlooking the Arabian Sea. The area was quiet, wild, and untouched by the bright lights of Nexus. The sound of waves crashing against the rocks filled the air, and a cool sea breeze carried the salty scent of the ocean.

"We're here," Kairos said, turning off the engine.

Aria looked out the window, her violet eyes scanning the darkening landscape.

"It's beautiful… and isolated. Perfect for what we need."

They stepped out and began unloading the equipment. Kairos pulled out the camping tent from the trunk — a sturdy, compact one designed for two people.

Aria watched him set it up with practiced hands.

"Where did you get the tent from?" she asked curiously.

Kairos shrugged as he hammered the last peg into the ground.

"I kept it ready. Just in case."

Aria walked closer and looked at the tent, then frowned slightly.

"And where is my tent?"

Kairos paused, then gave her a sheepish smile.

"I thought you would bring your own. So I only packed one."

Aria stared at the single tent, then at him.

"So we're sharing one tent?"

Kairos rubbed the back of his neck.

"Looks like it."

Aria sighed, but there was no real anger in it — just mild exasperation mixed with amusement.

"Fine. Let's just set it up and rest. We have a long day tomorrow."

They finished setting up the tent together. It was spacious enough for two, with a soft inflatable base and a mesh roof that allowed them to see the stars once they lay down. The night had fully settled in, the sky above glittering with countless stars and faint traces of aurora-like aether lights dancing far in the distance.

Inside the tent, they unrolled their sleeping bags side by side.

Aria lay down first, pulling the blanket over herself. Surprisingly, she felt comfortable. The awkwardness from the previous night had faded during the long drive, replaced by a quiet sense of trust.

Kairos lay down beside her, keeping a respectful distance.

"Good night, Aria."

"Good night, Kairos."

The sound of the waves and the gentle breeze lulled them both to sleep quickly.

Morning light filtered through the mesh roof of the tent.

Kairos woke up first. He blinked slowly, then realized something warm was pressed against his side.

Aria was curled up against him, her head resting on his chest, one arm draped loosely over his waist. She was still fast asleep, breathing softly and peacefully.

Kairos froze, not daring to move. His heart beat a little faster, but he didn't pull away. Instead, he stayed still, watching the gentle rise and fall of her breathing, the way the morning light touched her raven hair.

He closed his eyes again and allowed himself a few more minutes of quiet comfort.

A little later, Aria stirred.

She woke up slowly, feeling unusually warm and safe. When her eyes opened, she realized she was lying in Kairos's arms, her head on his chest, his arm loosely around her.

For a moment she didn't move.

She looked up at his sleeping face — relaxed, peaceful, the faint cut on his lip from two nights ago still visible. A small, soft smile touched her lips.

He didn't push me away…

She closed her eyes again and stayed there for a few more minutes, enjoying the rare feeling of safety and warmth before the day's responsibilities began.

Eventually, they both woke up properly.

Kairos sat up first, stretching.

"I'll make breakfast," he said.

He stepped outside the tent and prepared a simple but hearty meal using the portable stove and supplies they had brought — scrambled eggs with herbs, toasted bread, fresh fruit, and hot tea.

When everything was ready, they sat on a flat rock overlooking the sea, eating together.

Aria took a bite and her eyes widened slightly.

"This is really good," she said, genuinely surprised. "Better than most hotel food I've had."

Kairos smiled, taking a sip of tea.

"Thanks. I've been cooking for myself and my family since I was young. Had to learn quickly."

Aria looked at him thoughtfully for a moment.

"My situation was a bit similar," she said quietly. "My parents died in an accident when I was very young. After that… it was mostly just me and Reck. I had to grow up fast too."

Kairos met her eyes, understanding passing between them without needing many words.

The sea waves continued their steady rhythm below, the morning sun warming their faces.
